Lit is Life!
When I was a 16 year old in secondary school, the subject I enjoyed most was Literature, in large part due to my Literature teacher, Ms Lee. Every Literature lesson had its way of reaching deep into my core, the part of me I never knew existed, the part well aware of the nuances of human nature.
“Remove all impediments!” Ms Lee would shout with a facade of exasperation at the start of Lit class. Lit class always began on a high, with a bustling of activity and light spirits. After Ms Lee begins expositing the text, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the lesson would move into a more serious note. The sound of silence would prevail as we listened attentively and wrote furiously while Ms Lee dissected portions of the text often shedding light on life and love.
In a sense, Lit classes epitomised life lessons. Ms Lee symbolised the actual goal of education, often times neglected by those seeking to educate. Education was never meant to be measured merely by good grades, it was always about teaching one the very essence of life.
