When my family has the occasion to open a specific can with the label 'New Moon' on it, this means that its time for the new year again with all the accompanying celebrations! Famous for its abalone, a must-have at celebrations especially during the Chinese New Year celebrations, New Moon has become a household brand over the years.
However, what most people do not see is that New Moon specialises in a whole range of shellfish products. However, they tend to border on the exotic types. There was this occasion when I actually had otah from New Moon for a meal, though not as tasty as conventional types sold by Malay hawkers, it was of a reasonable standard.
The flagship product, abalone, however, is really worth a try. With four types of abalone in its arsenal, New Moon manufactures the shellfish such that it comes ready packed for any occasion. Stupefied? I bet you were expecting just one product, and never thought even abalone can be made into so much variety. Whichever the type, the experience can always be relied upon to be constant. The meat can be counted upon to be succulent and smooth, though it could be tricky to bite and chew. Moreover, the flavour is rich and explosive, and will arrive within milliseconds of the first bite. Its always a joy to eat abalone, but the expensiveness of the product, often ranging from $20+ to $40+ per can in NTUC meant that it could be enjoyed on special occasions only.
Its going to be Chinese New Year soon and I smell a dish full of abalone on its way. HUAT AH!
This is a trusted abalone brand. In fact, I think most people only know of this brand for canned abalone. It is popular in both Malaysia and Singapore. Many times, my dad received CNY hampers which contained this brand of canned abalone.
I always use the abalones for soup and porridge. Most times, the abalones are good. However, there was once where my family and I had food poisoning after eating the abalone in the soup. It may be due to the other ingredients in the soup but we highly suspected that it was the abalone.
