Poon Huat is a wholesaler for many of your baking needs. They sell many ingredients you usually cannot find in your local supermarket. You get to choose from a wider variety of ingredients for your recipe.
They also sell premixed ingredients so that you can cut short your cooking process and makes your baking experience more hassle free.
Last but not least, they hold courses every month in their outlets. If you are keen, you can sign-up on their website for a baking workshop where they teach how to bake certain recipes.
For people deeply in love with baking
I don't purchase much things from there, however my mum is their frequent customer. My mum makes and sells jelly to earn a little to help with the household expanses. She often purchases food colouring and jelly powder from the shop.
The price of their baking and dessert ingredients are reasonable, their products are not over-rated. I would definitely recommend this store to the people out there who simply love baking and making their own desserts. They have almost everything one would need for their baking session. It's definitely a great place to visit even if you're not intending to buy anything, you can always take a look at those beautiful and pretty icings and it would just brighten up your day.
My Mum's Best Friend
As a matter of fact, this shop is literally my mum's best friend. Being a baking-fanatic, my mum has been talking about this shop for the longest time that I can remember. She even knows the shop keeper personally, so much so they reserve baking equipment and things for her on occasions. Unlike my mum, I am really not a big fan of baking as it is very tedious in my opinion and takes up a lot of my time. While she is happily experimenting with new baking ingredients and recipes I would always be the supportive guinea pig.
Frequently going into this shop actually has its perks as it gives me sufficient knowledge when writing this review. The shop has expanded since its starting days, and although located in an ordinary neighbourhood, it has attracted quite a crowd these days. The shop has MANY different types of baking equipment ranging from the small piping shapes to even silicon moulds and boxes. Do not be fooled by its small size, the amount of things it contains is almost anything and everything to do with baking, somewhat like it has an unlimited storage linked to it. The quality of the baking supplies and ingredients are relatively good, and the prices are very reasonable. Especially for those homemade products, it is ideal as portions are not too large.
A baker's good friend.
I call this place a baker's good friend, and not a best friend because I have poor knowledge in shops set up specially for a baker. I know of Phoon Huat because my mom is a baker and always goes inside to purchase her baking goods. Sold at reasonable prices, Phoon Huat Red Man caters to all sorts of things a baker needs, from baking equipment to ingredients.
I may not buy anything from Phoon Huat as I am not a baker myself, but my experiences with my mom give me sort of an insight to what a baker does and needs. Other than sometimes helping her to make purchases, I tend to walk around and look at the different things Phoon Huat sells, from bottled syrups and juices (which I believe are not for drinking straight from the bottle) to slabs of butter and cheese.
What I dislike about the store at Hougang though is that it can be pretty cramp. I dread times when Phoon Huat has quite a number of people inside and everyone is trying to get past each other, and it's troublesome and annoying after you have been trying to walk through a path of customers browsing for their own goods and said excuse me for the umpteenth time, hehe.
Still, I feel that Phoon Huat is a good place for bakers to go to. It's convenient, and they tend to have most of the things bakers would need or want. Only a few times have I heard that they have no stock on certain goods, and they only discontinue products that are not being purchased much, but other than that, definitely worth looking around if you are a (budding) baker.
A store for all my baking ingredients
Days like Valentine's day, Birthdays, Christmas and other meaningful occasions, I love to bake some pastries for my love ones to show my sincere love for them. Red Man is a store where I can get all my baking materials all at once! From measuring cups to molds to flour to icing sugar and everything else that you need for your baking. You name it, they have it!
And the price that they offer for their products are cheap and affordable! You do not have to worry that your ingredients and stuffs would sum up to a horrifying amount when you are at the cashier. It's definitely cheaper to bake yourself and it's a fun learning process too! Start baking today!
My one- stop baking shop
I always make a baking checklist and head to Phoon Huat to get my items. Not just because it is affordable, there are also plenty of items available. I love baking stuffs with nuts. However, nuts are difficult to find in convenience store that is suitable for baking and I couldn’t find it anywhere else except by chopping it myself. My mum friend then recommended me to this store with variety of baking nuts. Since then, I only patronize here as they have almost everything that I need.
Assorted items of baking items, baking utensils, different type of flours, icing sugar, and mold is available there. You name it, they have it. It’s like a paradise for me and I believe all bakers love it too. I could shop inside for hours and think of the next items that I want to try baking. The staffs is also kind enough to ask me if I’ve any need as I’ve been standing there for quite long thinking which items goes well with the food that I want to make.
Pop in to Phoon Huat if you have nothing to do. Just by looking at their items, it will rekindle the interest of baking in you.
Who knew there's a baker in me?
The first time I went into Phoon Huat, I was blown away. I didn't know there's so much things and what-have-you's for baking, and all of a sudden I have this overwhelming urge to bake, bake and bake. My mum who accompanied me had this ecstatic look on her face (it's her first time too) and we ended up spending hours there.
There are shelves upon shelves of everything (at least that's what I think) you might ever need for baking. They also have their own pre-made ingredients which you might need like packaged cherries, pineapple paste, the like. From experience, me and my family knows we can trust Phoon Huat for quality yet affordable ingredients.
Anyway, their service was alright. Could be better, but no complaints. Phoon Huat is definitely a one-stop place for your baking needs.
A Baker's Paradise
You're walking home, and you're craving some cake. You don't have baking ingredients or materials at home. What do you do? Well, go to Phoon Huat of course!
I love Phoon Huat. Love is not a good enough word to describe it to be honest. They have everything here. They don't only sell stuff for baking, but for cooking too! I do believe it's appropriate to call it a paradise for people who bake.
You don't have to worry about being shy in this place. When I shop, I'm very shy to ask for help. But here, the staff is more than willing to help, they also recommend better options or cheaper options when needed. Their perishable products all have expiry dates, and if I'm not wrong, they are constantly restocking their shelves so they'll never run out of whatever you need.
Despite the small store, it is possible to spend hours because there is just so much to see. You will be overwhelmed with joy because customers are spoilt for choice. If you bake, or even cook, check out Phoon Huat. It really is nice to have such a store and with many locations too around Singapore. You can't find that back home in the Philippines!
A place to fuel your passion for baking.
I'm a frequent shopper at Phoon Huat due to my job and hobby: Baking. Ever since I wanted to first bake, I've visited their outlet at Bencoolen and their newest one at Braddell. There is just so much to see and buy in there!
With ingredients available for almost any recipe, and even those ingredients which are hard to source out, I have never left Phoon Huat feeling cheated. The baking utensils, display ornaments which they sell are also of top-notch quality. Their staff are without a doubt, one of the most knowledgeable I've ever met. ALL of their staff members know the names and details of the products sold in their stores, a fact which impresses very much in this age of half-informed salespeople.
All in all, any budding pastry chef must definitely pay a visit to Phoon Huat to find the fuel and inspiration for their dreams to be alive.
Wide selection of baking ingredients and some not-so-common ingredients found here.
Phoon Huat was one of the places for home bakers and mums to source for ingredients, be it for dessert, pastry, jelly, cake, confectionery, etc. They do carry in some of the ingredients which could not be found in the baking section of major leading supermarkets, for instance, Cold Storage, Market Place, FairPrice, etc.
I had been Phoon Huat to get my ingredients for baking often and it has been one of the first places I would recommend if you need baking ingredients. One glance at the chilled fridges tells you that they have a wide selection of products around, with many different brands of butter and milk. The items are arranged accordingly, to facilitate their customers to search for them. They even carry beer and fresh eggs at some of their branches. This is indeed something new to me. The products are of different sizes and amount, to facilitate each customer's needs. The staffs at the store are really helpful- they will help you search for your desired item if you did not manage to find them at the shelves.
What I really dislike from the store was the aisles along the shelves. They are really narrow and it can be troublesome if there are more customers in the same aisle. Other than that, I believe that this would make our trip to Phoon Huat much pleasant than before.
