HardwareZone was started as an online magazine in 1998. It has become a popular gathering place for Singapore's computer-savvy to discuss hardware and software news.
Is hardwarezone even about technologies anymore?
For the longest time I couldn't believe hardwardzone belonged to Singapore.
For one, the topics discussed here are anything from mildly pervertic to full-blown sexual encounters. I do not recall being led to this site on Google from technology. I only recall coming to this site when I was searching for "NS men treatment in maju camp" to know how my ex-boyfriend was coping in his camp. And I clicked around the site and man was I scarred.
There are really all sorts of strange topics here. There was once a girl competition of sorts, I have no idea how is it approved by admin but it got through, hurray to all the accidental readers who are going to get mentally disturbed by this!

A model of irrelevancy
The name 'hardware' intrinsically points to a forum which specialises in technical stuff and should technically, be focused on such an aspect. Instead, this site is synonymous with dabbling in controversial issues and fanning flames of hatred, inciting waves of witch-hunts and criticisms targeting unfortunate people who accidentally put a toe out of the line.
While it cannot be denied that the technical hardware section of this forum is indeed extremely helpful with tips, specifications and recommendations for the average buyer looking for a good gadget at a reasonable cost, it needs to strategically place more emphasis here and reduce on its stance on ongoing, irrelevant issues in order to further cultivate its image
I am definitely not a fan of Hardware Zone. I have to admit, some of the featured self-help articles can be useful for those who are keen to know more about technology, but I personally find the information very run-of-the-mill, and is hardly impressive.
As for the forums on Hardware Zone, let's just say I hold a dislike for them, but perhaps the word 'dislike' is a gross understatement. Foreigners should definitely be prevented from being able to view the forums, because the threads in Hardware Zone are crass, rude, and absolutely senseless or thoughtless, and it definitely portrays a negative image of all SIngaporeans.
Forum threads on Hardware Zone ranges from (pretty much extinct) docile users who actually ask for lifestyle tips in Singapore, to the trolls and judgmental folks who have basically dominated the forums and infected them with their sheer shallowness and crassness. These threads often feature discussions on certain women in Singapore, or government-bashing, and I really can't understand why anyone would want to visit Hardware Zone for such junk anymore.
Not the biggest fan of Hardware Zone, but if you are a fan of the forums there, yes I am definitely judging you.
Caveat Emptor applies
I would say that HWZ is useful for the most part. I get to find useful information on technology related products. I especially love the part where I am able to download price lists. It's like bringing Sim Lim Square into your home.
Especially for the benefit of those who have never been to Sim Lim Square (read: first time tourists), the shops selling computers and parts usually print their current prices on paper pricelists, usually A4 sized to as large as A3 sized. Having these on HWZ allows consumers to do their homework before going down to Sim Lim Square. Not doing your homework before going is a very bad idea.
What I don't quite like about HWZ is its forum pages which people love or hate. I find the forums to be too diverse and has too many categories, many of which are not tech focused. You also get a fair number of clowns makings posts that basically get on people's nerves.
Consider yourselves warned.
Most useful thing is the forum
The forum in hardwarezone is one of the most popular forums used in Singapore. While outsiders may be fooled into thinking that the forum would be filled with tech stuff and geeky discussions about which graphics card is the best one right now, this forum holds discussions about anything and everything under the sun.
The forum is neatly categorized for easy navigation and there are categories for almost everything (with the exception of NSFW content of course). The forum is also notorious for having their own language so new users can and will get confused. But persevere on and you will be rewarded (sometimes) with good advice from hardwarezoners and of course humor.
Other than the forum, hardwarezone offers articles about mostly tech stuff, which I find useless. If I ever needed my tech news fix, I would head over to more popular sites like engadget and theverge.
I have great disdain for HardwareZone. Though I will admit that there are helpful forums every once in a while, especially pertaining to the self-help section, there are 10 negative things for every 1 helpful thing you can find on this online forum.
Through my experience on the website, I realised that there are people who are genuinely looking for help and advice (and my heart goes out to you, because this is a horrible place to look for good advice, safe technology and gadgets), and scumbags of society who have nothing better to do in their lives, instead willing to spend their time trolling the place and mocking everyone else.
Thumbs down on Singapore's "number 1 lifestyle portal".
Anything and Everything!
Hardware zone is a 4 out of 5 stars for me because its forums have the widest range of topics and the most ridiculous stuff! Any controversial topic will have pages and pages of comments and seriously, some singaporeans are just ridiculous in their comments. (Which is sad and yet entertaining at the same time)
I personally use it to get to know stuff that may not be covered by the mainstream media like - property ! Hardware zone is not only about tech stuff anymore ! I got to know about other netizen's queue numbers or their take on which house is better. Comparisons on anything and everything. It's like an encyclopedia of Singaporean thoughts and views. Really fascinating!
Good place for people to keep track of technology trends.
Hardware zone is a website that I usually go to when I need to buy something related to technology. It provides me with websites links, be it online or retail shops, and also, you might also find people selling away their 2nd hand gadgets for a much cheaper price! However, do be aware of scams!
I do not really depend the "gossips" from this website as through my own experience, many are unreliable and ridiculous.
Discussion in the forums of this website is fairly good. However, if you are a tech-geek, its not a place for you. Some users are just irresponsible, and tends to spout incorrect facts thinking that they are actually right- I had a hard time argue-ing with these people and gave up in the end. =/
My conclusion: Cheap-digs available and a relevant site for newbies or normal tech users! If you are a geek whom tends to argue whether Apple's A6 Quad Core is "stronger" than Samsung S3's Exynos 4412 Quad Core, save your time and energy in something else!
Pros and Cons
Hardware Zone no doubt offers you a variety of information from relatable locals (that are bound to have like-minded thoughts and opinions), from satisfying your enquiries on anything at all, to purchasing and selling items that you cannot find elsewhere (or at a cheaper price) and that you cannot find other platforms (at such convenience) to do so respectively.
However, everything has their pros and cons as usual, and Hardware Zone can be a double-edged sword when it is used to discuss certain topics that can actually infringe on the privacy of others. For one, two teenage girls had to face the ridiculous position of being "selected" (this girl, or that girl?) and "voted for" on a forum, with their photos being posted on the thread and people making cynical or (kinda) disturbing comments.
Thus, Hardware Zone does serve as a good platform for a wide variety of things, but it can also lead to not-so desirable situations when used inappropriately! (So use it wisely!)
Always updated with the latest affairs
You can no doubt find ANYTHING on Hardware Zone.
Their forums are always bustling with juicy news and gossips.
There is the fair share of horny guys sharing explicit stories there and asking weird questions but there are also threads that provide really good information for our queries!
I really like it in a way that it is quickly updated like the news of the Amy Cheong saga, you will find it on HW zone faster than on any other forums!
