With sturdy wooden furniture lining the restaurants and walls adorned by vintage ornaments, the atmosphere of the cafe is a homely, cozy, warm one. The intimate setting is perfect for romantic liaisons, a private rendezvous, or simply a relaxing meet-up with friends.
I chanced upon this place when my friend invited me to have brunch here. I was enchanted by the decor and enamored with the display of books. I fell even more in love with this cafe when I realised belatedly that these books weren't simply there for show, we could actually pick them up and browse through them while taking our time over our meals. While my friend invited me there in the hope of a catch-up session over coffee and cake, I ended up nose-deep in one of the books I randomly picked out from the selection and ignored her throughout the time we were there. Of course, after said friend realised I wasn't going to talk to her, she spent the rest of her time there alternating between texting, clanking her coffee cup angrily and finally picking up another book and reading - she didn't leave the cafe furious with me, which goes to show the magical restorative power of literature.
Although there is much to shout about the concept of the cafe, the food leaves much to be desired - however, since to me, the food merely serves as accompaniment to what I'm actually there for (the books, in case you haven't picked up on that), I would still definitely recommend it.
Great ambiance, and good food too!
I chanced upon this cafe with my friend online, as we were looking for a quaint and quirky place to spend a relaxing evening, without rush or pressure. And we had a great evening in the cafe, and you'd probably enjoy it a ton more if you're book-lovers like us!
The interior is extremely quaint and nicely ornamented with antiquated woody furniture, giving one the feeling of entering a different space, segregated away from the rest of business. It is warmly lit, tending toward the darker side, which gives the cozy and warm feeling one gets from stepping into home. There're also tons of antiques donning the nooks and crannies, making you feel transported in time, which is beyond coolness. The best part was the shelves of books that lined their walls from ceiling to floor. And as a self-acclaimed bibliophile, being surrounded by books in a cafe is just inexplicable bliss. It definitely is a novel experience.
We ordered a pot of tea and I chose to snack on the tomato bruschettas. The bruschettas were just heavenly. It's probably one of the best I've tasted anywhere. The olive oil and tomatoes were so nicely mixed in such a proportion it is a definite must-have. What more, the lady boss who personally mans and tends to the customers is extremely warm and approachable, and just so sophisticated too! I definitely enjoyed our short but engaging exchange, which added so much pleasure to my visit.
My friend and I just chilled there, reading our own books, then later browsing through their interesting collection too, of books and ornaments. It had a really peaceful and quiet ambiance which puts one so at ease and comfort, you'd be able to forgo all the stress and burden you had had at work for those few hours.
I'd definitely return to this cafe, even though it takes a little bit of a walk. But it is such an enlightening and out-of-this-world experience I never got any where else before. Besides, they do hold parties on special occasions like Halloween too!
Definitely come if you're looking for something unorthodox and not your typical Singapore-crowded-and-crammed space. ;)
