The New Paper is Singapore's second-highest circulating newspaper by SPH. Originally an afternoon paper, The New Paper evolved itself into becoming a daily paper a few years ago. Prominent for it's eye-catching tabloid journalism and bold headlines, The New Paper tends to focus on human-interest stories, entertainment, fashion and sports.

Sensational at its best!

The New Paper can be said to be the lesser capable brother of the Straits Times. The grammar and level of English used is simple atrocious. Also, its primary focus seems to be on scandals and gossips rather than articles of actual value.

I remember my English teacher saying that the paper is for the everyday man but not for one in search of intellectual stimulation. It may seem harsh but the truth is its competitive edge lies on its entertainment factor but everything else falls short for a good read. Students especially should search for papers focusing on hard facts instead of mindless speculation.

Reading For Fun

Because I dislike reading, reading the newspaper is a chore for me. However, I wanted to start the practice of reading the newspaper because otherwise I would be too out of touch with the world.

The first newspaper I attempted to read was the Newpaper, and I bought my first copy from my secondary school bookstore. At that time, it was fun to buy the newspaper together with my friend and we would read it together and discuss the news that was written. Of course, the Newpaper is filled with mostly tabloid news and not serious issues, hence it was more suitable for youngsters like us, just looking for a source of entertainment.

Nonetheless, it is quite a good place to start the practice of reading the newspaper because the news written inside is very readable and simple, and will not stress you out too much. After getting used to reading news in general, one can then move on to reading much more serious newspapers such as the Straits Times, where there is a larger variety of news.

The only thing I dislike about the Newpaper is the thick stack of pages that cover advertisements. It takes up quite a large bulk of the newspaper and I do not even read it.

Tabloid

The New Paper has, in my opinion, received considerable flak from many citizens/netizens in our nation. However, I feel that some of it is unwarranted.

True, it is more of a tabloid as compared to the more serious newspapers out there. But that is it's main selling point. From sensational headlines to more than 1/4 of the paper being dedicated to sports, it is obvious that it is meant to be a different product. If I am not mistaken, it has an average daily circulation of more than 100,000. I strongly suggest people to take it only at arm's length; don't let this confuse you with 'regular' news.

But all in all, a rather entertaining paper.

Sensational - That's the way it is.

New Paper is simply sensational reporting of all things nonsense but again a very useful channel to voice any unhappiness and complaints as they would make sure the news would be so sensational that any actions or remedy actions that need to be taken would be done immediately.

I still remember that there was an incident relating to NUS students booking their modules and all the issues with the booking system. Once New Paper reported it, NUS admin did a thing the students had never seen before, which was to give a proper explanation on how things went wrong and to have a good solution to it.

However, other than this New Paper is really just a empty piece of information source and is a waste of paper. They can never be as sensational as tabloids overseas, yet they tried to fill that gap. And the thing is that compared to the evening chinese papers, other than the news in the front page, the rest of the news looks like its from the net. Its really not necessary for this paper to be around, but weirdly, there are still paper rushing to buy them just to watch sports and racing. Good luck to the punters.

A very smart scam

The New Paper is smart, I give it that.

TODAY is a newspaper enough for me, but The New Paper always have all these interesting front page headlines and I'd be foolishly duped into buying a copy at work. the news would often end up to be stale and unworthy of even 70 cents. Everything else is a bore and it's nothing at all intriguing. I'd get better enjoyment throwing 70 cents into a wishing well and hoping for the best.

I think at this point, even a revamp would not save this magazine. Hire a better editor and a more colorful journalist crew, that's probably all that's left to do.

A newspaper not to be taken seriously.

I look at The New Paper as something I pay 70 cents for and get about 30 mins of amusement. There is nothing comphehensive or intellectual about the contents of The New Paper. I find their headlines rather sensationalist and their articles editorials to be of rather poor quality. I find that the TODAY paper makes for a much better read and covers much more areas of interest. The New Paper would do well to take a leaf or two from the editors at TODAY, I feel.

And if you were to observe their Sunday edition, you would see that most of the time their headlines have a sexually-themed headline or cover story! It's true, observe it for yourself.

A step forward

The situation may be improving, but Singaporean students are often labelled ignorant and study-machines. I will not elaborate on Singapore's paper chase and how a worrying big portion of students are only studying subjects with width covered in their exams.

I am guilty. I was one of the many in sceondary school. The only time I read newspapers was due to the fact of compulsory review homework.

The new paper reduced normal-newspaper-size to a more desirable size for more convenient reading, especially ideal for kids and young adults (well, i guess the person holding it reading won't look like an old uncle or auntie reading at the coffee shop). It has a almost a summary highlighting daily news from business, economics and politics, sports and daily happenings. Though not all the news are interesting, starting from one section to two sections and so on will definitely be a good start to cultivate children their newspaper-reading. I remembered I started reading from the new paper and because I was curious of the full story of some articles, I began reading the full text and now, almost the full newspaper.

It may be a chore for some children, but I have started appreciating the news to begin to realise how small a world Singaporeans are living in. Children in the past has no such opportunity, so why not garner some friends and start reading together?

Due to today's technology advancement, news can be read online anytime. anywhere. But the traditional feel of touching and flipping the page will make the reading more enjoyable!

not as bad as it seems

I remember The New Paper is always referred as the 'trashy newspaper' by my secondary school English teacher as it does not really contain any constructive news, and it contains mainly news regarding murders, crimes and other weird things that happened in Singapore.

I personally like The New Paper as it is interesting to read and the articles are not long except for the headlines. The New Paper is also smaller in size and not as thick as other newspaper like Straits Times so it will be easier to carry around. I think it is also important to read newspaper like The New Paper although the news in it are more of gossips and not really important articles as compared to Straits Times.

A newspaper suitable for the younger generations

Always complaining of how wordy and lengthy the traditional newspaper is? And how inconvenient it is to flip the big sized of newspaper when traveling? The New Paper is designed to attract more readerships from the younger generations. As the young people nowadays do not have the habit of reading newspaper, they are not updated of the latest news and happenings around the world. With The New Paper reducing the paper size into slightly bigger than A4 size, with substantial summary of the important news and also entertainment sections, it definitely attracted more readership than the traditional newspapers! They also held competitions every year to search for talented girls to be The New Face.

Gossip paper. Not one bit educational at all.

The New Paper... where do I start? I dislike this paper as much as I dislike soggy toast and uncooked muffins. I even find 70 cents too expensive for the quality of the news in TNP. Even the free papers like TODAY are so much better than TNP. As an educator, I always strongly discourage my students from reading TNP.

1) Bad english. Grammar is off. Words are not chosen properly to suit the context. Sentences are sometimes broken.

2) No educational value. Yes, they might write about Hollywood's biggest scandal of the year but really? How educational is that. It's almost akin to a gossip magazine. Gossiping here and there, lack of facts, barrel full of opinions without support. Even a secondary school student would recognize the importance of writing an article with factual supports. What's more a newspaper?

3) Just meaningless.

I would highly recommend Straits Times over TNP. Straits Times is how I would expect a newspaper to be. Unless you are looking for something light, gossipy and non-serious then yeah, TNP would probably fit the bill. Otherwise, please choose Straits Times!
