Convenient and very friendly
TS greatest strength is in its prevalence in our island. It is easy to find a branch near you and they will definitely have stock of the latest movies, usually English and Korean. For pure english movies, they sometimes have chinese versions or ones with chinese subtitles, which makes it very local friendly. I frequent TS all the time to get my movie.
The service is not bad too because you jut have to ask the shopkeeper whether they have the title of the movie and they will check it out in their database in no time. My advice is that if you have a movie in mind, just ask the staff; they can point it out in no time! If you are jut looking for a good movie to watch when you're bored, cheap out the older ones. The shop is tiny so it makes finding things easier.
If you wait long enough, older movies (maybe 2-3 years old) will have their cost drop to below $10, which is an excellent bargain! I bought very cheap discs of $7 to watch during my vacation.
There was a time when I collected VCD for movies and TS was the shop I frequented. They normally have clearance stocks for slightly older movies and those were priced at a good bargain price. Owning the VCD as compared to renting the VCD was only slightly different in the amount paid so logically, I would choose to own the VCD.
The problem came when I was moving house. I suddenly realised that I had such a big collection of VCDs and the worst part was a lot of the VCDs were still in its original packaging meaning I had not even watched the movie once.
Many experts in saving money always advised, "Know your needs from your wants". I guessed I just wanted the VCD but did not really need them because I did not even watch them. I had stopped buying VCD or DVD for myself but I am still buying for my children. Young children can keep on watching the same show many times so it is value for money.
A VCD/DVD store that is all over the island
To be honest, I don't really differentiate between TS and Poh Kim much for they both sell similar (identical) products (I just enter the shop without really looking at the shop name most of the time). Both have their own promotions whereby you can snatch a deal (less than $10 for a movie). I think TS needs to be more different to stand out more so as to be the main choice for VCD/DVD consumers, if they intend to increase their market share that is.
Enough of blabbering, here's what I think about TS. Comparing between the two, I do prefer Poh Kim's lighting as it's more dim and comfortable to the eyes. TS always has a glaring white interior lighting which I personally disliked and found it straining to my eyes (the branch at Tampines Interchange at least).
Not sure if people prefer this service style but I do like TS service staff. They tend to not follow you around, offering you assistance and I prefer that since most of the time, I'm not looking for anything in particular and am just strolling around to see if any movies or drama catches my eye. If I really am indeed looking for a particular title, I would definitely approach them instead so I think there's no need to lurk behind me.
Pricing wise, TS is rather competitive, or should I say similar to competitors. Over the years, the prices of VCD/DVDs have generally fallen to a much affordable and value-for-money state. Instead of going to the movies for a date next time, you can always try shopping for a movie DVD and screen it from the comfort of your home (with a big tub of Ben & Jerry's in front of you) for a different experience.
A Korean Drama fanatic
Years ago, I was a Korean Drama marathon runner. Back then, there was no/little Korean dramas featured online and I would always beg my parents to visit the TS store. The store always offer the most recent and most popular dramas. I will always be thrilled and jumping with joy by just reading the synopsis of the drama. Then, I will use all means to convince my parents to get me one!
Unfortunately, due to the proliferation of more and more Korean Dramas online, I no longer visit the store that frequently for my Korean Dramas. Still, I will always stand in front of the TS store and openly watch the drama or movie that is being featured on the TV. I still feel sorry that I could not visit the store that frequently anymore, but it will always be part of my memories.
Thank you for my Pokemon
Thank you for my childhood.
I was young and silly and I loved Pokemon to death. TS used to be at Sunshine Place and they sold VCDS of Pokemon episodes in Chinese and English. I fancied myself a small-time collector and my grandmother was always setting aside grocery money for my favourite hobby. I would trawl through the VCDs and look for my Pokemon episodes. I remember getting them in Chinese because I liked to watch it with my grandma and she didn't understand English. So believe it or not, I can recite the whole Team Rocket speech in Chinese without missing a beat and under a time limitation. I can also sing the whole Japanese original song intro but we are digressing.
This place was wholly responsible for my childhood entertainment and I cannot thank them enough but for all it's worth and for every sugar in my memories, thank you.
Whenever I want to purchase any CDs or DVDs of my favourite korean drama or movie, TS would be the first place that comes to my mind. They have almost all the drama and movie with high popularity and are of affordable prices. There seems to be a lot of promotions for TS now so the CDs and DVDs are even more affordable.
If you are a member of TS, you are entitled to more discounts and they will send you SMS and emails regarding the new dramas and movies that they will be bringing in and are on sale. The staff are rather friendly and helpful as well, always there to introduce you the more popular dramas and movies.
TS is always fun to visit, it always offers the latest drama, movies and cartoons on sell, the drama series is huge, it can range from korean to taiwan, china and even america, i myself have bought a korean drama before because i'm a huge fan of kpop and the quality of the drama is good, definitely comparable to the 720HD quality in youtube videos. The store also constantly plays a never ending tv about the latest songs as well, it's good entertainment for consumers while they shop. The only complain i have is about the price, it's abit too expensive, some prices of drama remains the same even after they are released for about 1 year.
Keep it Up, TS !
TS has offer a wide variety of dramas and movies ranging from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Hollywoood, Korea, etc. Personally, I prefer to purchase Korea dramas because it offer dual langauge (Korea and Chinese).
However, I think the price of the DVDs are abit expensive. One series of drama cost about 20 bucks, Compare to rental, it costs 50% more. One of my recommendation is that TS could also offer rental services to the public. Compare to other DVD shops like let's say Hong Kong, there is still room for improvement for TS, at least in my opinion. Overall rating, 3 /5.
great service and great collection of DVDs!
Like Poh Kim, TS also has an impressive collection of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan dramas. Planning to buy Secret Garden or City Hunter? Well, head down to TS! They have pretty great sales.
However in terms of classic movies, this is where both stores differ from one another. I'm a pretty hardcore fan of Clint Eastwood, so I was ecstatic when I came across the Dirty Harry series. Each costs S$9.90, which is a great bargain! Fans of Al Pacino and James Caan, you might want to check out The Godfather series for S$49+. If you're planning to buy just 1 part, each cost around $13+. Although I was pretty bummed out that the store does not sell Annie Hall, the shopping experience was satisfying enough.
You can shop online as well. If you have a minimum purchase of S$20, the delivery charge will be free of charge. If purchase is less than S$20, be prepared to pay S$3.50 for delivery charge. FYI only in Singapore.
Service was good. I was immediately greeted by the shop assistant. Although he was clearly busy(he was tidying up the CD racks), he was friendly and courteous.
