It isn’t just the food that is home-styled – the intricate traditional and cutesy murals on the white walls of this general Japanese eatery in the Kampong Glam enclave are mostly hand-painted too. Box n Sticks serves everything from chawanmushi, sushi and tempura to soba, salads, skewers and bentos.

Used to be better
The first time I had Box & Sticks was when it just started operations. All my friends loved the place and the food when I introduced it to them.
Fast forward 3 years later, I went back again to find that the place has moved. Like in the past, I ordered my usuals - the bacon carbonara spaghetti, the Box and Sticks Maki (specialty roll) and the Buta Kakuni with onigiri (pork belly with Japanese rice ball). While I was happy to know that both the Box and Sticks Maki and the bacon carbonara spaghetti tasted pretty much the same as before, I was slightly disappointed to discover that the Buta Kakuni with onigiri was less robust in taste, with gravy a lot more watered down than before. Nonetheless, the tenderness of the pork belly made up for it.
I certainly hope that this was a one-off experience that would vanish the next time I visit!
