I love all things japanese, from savoury thick broths to springy ramen and maki. So when I tried Idaten Udon’s personalised udon, I was a little skeptical of the clear soup. It looked suspiciously bland and tasteless, with thick chewy noodles that were something the stringy noodle lover like me usually avoided. However, once I tried the soup, I became a convert.
The soup was thin but filling in its own way, and it complemented the chewy, starchy noodles superbly. At Idaten, you are your own chef - you choose what to put in your udon. They have mostly fried sides and condiment toppings, so the clear soup is a nice cleansing accent to the oily fried chicken I added.
For just $8, I had a satisfying Japanese meal that was healthier than the usual meaty ramen broths. It’s also light enough to eat daily for a quick dinner fix, making it one of my favourite Japanese food haunts.
