Sakuraya is a fish market restaurant that I'm really familiar with, not because I've frequent them many times, but because I was part of their service crew for a couple of months at the Parkway brunch. I always believe that there's two side to any story, and the same goes for food- customers' perspective and that of those behind the scenes.
Just last Friday evening, I brought my partner to the West Coast Plaza outlet for dinner. I went despite knowing that the prices are steep for the quality of food (frozen except for the sashimi). It was 80% full and the restaurant was short handed, again.
To my dismay, the manager took my orders hastily. He was impatient in his tone and did not even maintain eye contact. Same goes for the rest of the service staffs who were very slow to respond when I raised my hand for assistance. I detest service staffs who disregard younger customers as if age should determine how attentive they are towards you. As long as they're paying, I believe all customers are rightfully entitled to the same standard of service. Unfortunately, this is obviously an issue that Sakuraya WCP has.
Food wise it was very substandard as well. Except for the Tamago Unagi ($7) maki, the rest of the dishes we ordered were nothing exceptional, even for the sashimi which they're reputable for. For a small serving of salmon belly, we were charged $16 and it wasn't very fresh. The plate of shishamo ($5 for 4) was scrawny and lacked the fleshy belly of eggs we were expecting. The portion of soft shell crab was what angered me the most. We were given such a tiny portion it barely covered the size of my palm, and yet I saw triple the portion served to another customer. When I pointed out this disparity to the staff, he simply shut me off by saying there's nothing wrong with the serving. Mind you, I paid $6 for a bite. As for refilling of the tea, I raised my hand for so long till I gave up and just billed the meal.
Overall it was an unpleasant experience. I must say that the standard and quality have dropped significantly. This is in comparison to the Parkway parade outlet so it might be a more prudent choice to visit the latter.
very fresh sashimi!
Don't be fooled by this small, plain-looking eatery. The sashimi served here is really fresh, and miles better than the ones served at popular Japanese eateries in Singapore! (shall not name them as it's not very nice) The place really does have the feel of a fish mart, perhaps because of how crowded it can get during peak hours, as well as the unassuming decor.
Do be prepared to pay higher prices for the quality of the food you get here, though. If you don't keep an eye on what you're ordering, the bill may come as quite a shock!
Oooops! I blew my budget
The first time I ate here, I wasn't sure why. I actually was looking for some miso paste and I did find it. However, my wife also found some cuts of salmon belly in the fridge and it looked very tempting. Seeing that people were eating there, we decided to get a cut that cost us somewhere in the middle to high double digits.
It was sliced and we sat down to enjoy our sashimi. To say it was good would do it injustice. It was quickly finished and we got up to get 2 more cuts plus one cut of tuna belly as well. It was a real indulgence. Total bill? $250. Was it worth it? Every damned cent!
Really enjoy dining at places that do not place emphasis on its decor but focuses on delivering fresh and quality food. Sakuraya is such a place where you can kickback and dress in our preferred national attire of bermudas and flip flops and yet enjoy a gastronmical experience. Therefore this is not a place for those who wants the complete Japanese dining experience. You will be at the right place though if you're seeking good, fresh sashimi and sushi. On top of that, if you're into Japanese cooking as well, there is also a supermarket section where one can get Japanese produce in great variety.
Apart from all kinds of sashimi that are really fresh and good( you get to select the entire slab of fish before the chef prepares for you). I actually think that this is one place(other than those really pricey and fine Japanese restaurants) that prepares really fresh, yummy and authentic Uni Gunkan(sea urchin). Very creamy, savoury rich taste fills one's palate as it swirls and engulfs your mouth....Mmm. Delicious! Also must try the Azari soup, Miso soup cooked with clams also very tasty.
I went to Sakuraya today at West Coast Plaza. It was a last minute decision; we wanted to eat Pastamania but decided otherwise.
The place isn't very intimidating; it had a very down-to-earth and simple (but not basic) decor. It was my first time there and it felt rather refreshing. The menu seemed kinda shady though, in the sense that that it wasn't elaborately written like those from Sakae or Nihonmura. While the menu may not look expensive, the food was. However, I think the price of the food was contributed largely by the freshness of it. I think the place emphasized greatly on freshness and it did taste pretty fresh to me. One feature of the place is that they display their sashimi-before-it-is-turned-into-sashimi for the customers' view. It was a pity that I did not manage to order their salmon because I was too full from another course but the tuna which my dad ordered was good. The servings were okay, I would say pretty worth it, given the level of freshness.
Overall, it was a good experience and I will return there again, since the price isn't too expensive, it's the normal price for Japanese food outlets and the food is fresh.
Used to be fresher
Sakuraya used to be my go-to when I was craving value-for-money, fresh sashimi. For the price Sakuraya charges, such fresh sashimi was rare. Service wise, I have nothing to complain about; Sakuraya's staff will always help with sashimi recommendations.
However, I feel that the standard of freshness has dropped. And I am not alone in thinking that.
Now, for that same price, I will hesitate in going to Sakuraya and might choose to go to another more conveniently-placed Japanese restaurant with the same price range and standard. And I will definitely be on the look-out for my next favourite sashimi place.
The place to go when I have craving for good and affordable sashimi. The Sakuraya branch at West Coast Plaza serves up great salmon fillets, yellowtail, swordfish, tuna belly etc. You can select the sashimi you like from the fridge.Top any of it off with a bottle of sake and you will have a very full meal. Don't underestimate the slices they serve from the counter for they look smaller than they actually fill the stomach. Without a rice dish, a good helping of any fish slice gives a satisfying, healthful lunch.
Ambience wise, the entire place was packed by 12.30pm. Sakuraya isn’t a high class Japanese restaurant. As the name goes, it is really more of a fish mart. It was noisy and the place had no elaborate decoration. Don't expect great service here. The waitresses were pretty slow in serving and refilling our green tea. We had to request at least twice before they finally attended to us.
You can also buy fresh fish and some Japanese range of snacks and condiments at this outlet.
Casual Japanese dining at its best!
My family of 4 arrived at Sakuraya (WCP) at about 7.30pm on a normal Friday night, and had to queue for about 20 minutes before we got our table. The place was so packed! However, due to the fast-paced vibe the place gives off, customers usually eat and leave quite fast. The wait was bearable too as my parents were busy choosing the sashimi from the counter while I queued haha.
This is definitely the place to come for fresh and unpretentious sashimi! You choose how much you want; something like buying meat from supermarkets, you get to pick the exact slab that is prepacked (with the price stated there). I love this concept as I loveeee salmon sashimi more than the other kinds so I get to pick a bigger slab of salmon and etc etc. I see it as more worth it than going to either Sushi Tei of Sakae and getting 5 to 7 miserable slices of sashimi and about $10.
Their salmon sashimi is really good. The best I have eaten! It's really tender and soft and sweet as well.
Besides the sashimi, they serve other really good food off their menu as well! They are:
1) Potato croquette (awesome!)
2) Avocado unagi maki (must have!!)
3) Soup udon (I like the soup base)
It's a casual eatery so my family felt really comfortable and given by the amount of food we ordered, the price was really reasonable!
Fresh and Raw.
Fish mart Sakuraya is a “pick your own fish” concept restaurant and it has outlets in West Coast Plaza and Parkway Parade. I have only been to the outlet at Parkway Parade though. I love the concept of allowing the diner to choose the fresh slabs of various sashimi before the various sushi chefs prepare your dinner. This gives a “fresher than the others” effect that really is a successful selling point for the establishment.
This is almost strictly a sashimi restaurant as the dishes on the menu are really limited to sashimi and a few cooked fish dishes. I personally just go for the juiciest slices of salmon and Mekajiki (swordfish) I can afford on in the freezer, hand them to the chefs and ask for them to be sashimi-ed. I’ve tried the place 3 times and its sashimi has always been fresh and up to standard! The establishment also serves various types of sake and I am a fan of hot sake with sashimi. The feeling of fresh fish, against the warmth that sake gives you down the chest is one of the most satisfying especially when you feeling like having a healthy, and light meal.
