Not bad!

Ichiban Boshi is a restaurant that serves Japanese food ranging from Sukiyaki to Bento boxes and sushi. It has 6 outlets in Singapore, which is why I find their food rather commercialised. The Japanese food they serve have lost their authenticity. For instance, the soup in their udon lacks the strong taste of mirin. Additionally, their food is rather pricy - one would expect to spend up to $25 for lunch there.

However, if one is seeking a mid-range Japanese restaurant, Ichiban Boshi may be the place to go. While the food is pricier than Sakae Sushi for example, it tastes better. Also, another plus point is that they have a loyalty card where you get a stamp for every $20 spent. This card can eventually be exchanged for vouchers or free food items such Agedashi Tofu and California roll. Personally, this incentivises me to spend in multiples of 20.

Overall, if you are looking for a authentic Japanese dining, Ichiban Boshi may fall short in delivering that. Instead, Ichiban Boshi is more suited for families to grab a quick dinner on a weekend after school and work.

Comfortable, delicious, almost classy.

The distinction between Ichiban Boshi and its younger brother Ichiban Sushi is clear. For one, its service staff is better trained (or seems to be) and service standards usually are far better here. The ambience I find is also better: dim/warm yellow lighting as opposed to the bright lights that Ichiban Sushi favours - an attempt at bringing across a sense of 'class' that is fairly succesful.

Food wise - Ichiban Boshi is one of my preferred restaurants for Japanese dining (the others being Itacho and Rakuzen). You may wonder why I don't stick to a single restaurant: the answer is that different restaurants have different areas of specialty and you don't want to keep eating the same thing over and over. For Ichiban Boshi, their specialty lies in their set meals which are quite sumptous. Most of them come with Chawanmushi, Rice, Miso Soup, and usually Sashimi. In the absence of the last item, the set usually comes with Soft Shell Crab/Agedashi Tofu/something of similar value instead, usually when the main course already features raw salmon. You can tremendous bang for your buck when ordering their set meals, some of which are large enough to share for two people with relatively small appetites. They also have a large variety of set meals so no matter your preference (i.e. Sukiyaki, Raw Fish, Chicken, Beef, etc) - they've got you covered.

A plus point they have is also their loyalty card where you get a stamp for every $20 you spend. This card can eventually be exchanged for vouchers depending on how far in you are, and you get to redeem free items like Agedashi Tofu and Sashimi along the way as well. Personally, this incentivises me to spend in multiples of 20.

All in all, a solid Japanese restaurant which consistently serves up enjoyable Japanese fare. Sushi is creative (recommended to try "The Peak" and their Salmon Avocado Handroll, both of which are unique to them) and Sashimi fresh. They don't serve free green tea though.

Sashimi For Your Belly & aBudget

I have a confession. I have a perpetual sashimi craving. It is absolutely insatiable. And absurd high pricings are just too huge a barrier for students to cross. (Oh, I forgot to mention. Japanese cuisine is one of my all-time favourite.)

Ichiban Boshi is absolutely amazing though. They have such fresh food at such affordable prices! Freshness is at its peak especially during peak hours, lunch/dinner period. This is especially so for the sashimi. The inexplicable mix of coolness and tenderness that melts in your mouth is simply astounding for the price you pay.

It might not match-up to higher-end Japanese restaurants in their quality and taste, but for budget-conscious students (or even adults! Singapore is a hell of a money black hole, don't we all know...) like me, it does well. It's definitely better than ready-packed boxes at supermarkets, and I personally think Ichiban Boshi does it better than Sakae, in both quality and service.

Service is impressive. Even during the busiest of peak periods. The staff is always ready with a smile and responds well and efficiently to your requests. Although there are time it takes slightly more effort to get their attention, I do understand that it's impossible to keep-up with customers' unending demands. And their politeness and promptness upon your request makes up for it too. So on the overall, their service ranks well in my charts.

Ichiban Boshi is definitely my topmost option when I have a Japanese craving to curb. ^_^

Fresh Ingredients Star In Simply Prepared Dishes

Ichiban Boshi is a Japanese concept restaurant, no 2 outlets are similar in menu, ambience, and service. What is similar across the board for Ichiban Boshi restaurants is their commitment to use the freshest ingredients, simplicity in preparation and presentation, and reasonably priced and affordable Japanese cuisine.

Ambience is part of the concept of Ichiban Boshi, and revolves around transporting the diner to a locale in Japan. Decor and furniture could range from simple, to modern contemporary, to traditional. All Ichiban Boshi outlets feature a conveyor sushi belt as the center showpiece, behind which the various chefs go about their work. Part of their appeal is also the takeaway Sushi counter, prominently displayed outside Ichiban Boshi outlets, which are colourful and attractive.

Service at most Ichiban Boshi outlets are fast and efficient, though consistency of staff alertness and initiative differ greatly. Junior staff may sometimes struggle with menu knowledge, while experienced staff are very well versed in it. Staff are also trained to check on how your meal is going, and ask for feedback.

Food at Ichiban Boshi focuses mainly on Japanese sushi, sashimi, seafood, hot pots, and katsu. Quality and freshness of ingredients across all Ichiban Boshi is very good, and prices are reasonable for the high quality. Dishes are mostly tasty and flavourful, with the natural taste of ingredients as a highlight. Takeaways also tend to hold up well for 1 - 2 hours, though sushi is best consumed as soon as possible. Each Ichiban Boshi outlet also has a particular speciality, which means ordering the same items elsewhere gets you a lower quality, but still passable dish. Highly recommended to order the outlet's speciality, and skip those items that aren't.

The Chasoba With Inari Bean Skin features green tea infused soba noodles. The sweet bean skin lends a burst of flavour to the overall dish.

Hands down the most terrible dish here, the Chawanmushi is lacking in taste and presentation appeal. Highly recommended to avoid this.

The Chicken Katsu is meaty and juicy, with crisp battered skin. Well fried, but the skin is too thick and fatty for my liking, fortunately it's easy to remove.

Simple and uncomplicated, the Unagi Sandwich - BBQ Eel, Egg, Seaweed is a delight to eat, as what you see is what you taste.

There is a wide variety of Sushi here, all made fresh daily. Extremely popular in their takeaway counters, and at closing times, when all remaining Sushi is sold at discounted prices.

Are ex-staff allowed to review?

But nonetheless!

As me and my friends were staff here, I have helpfully rated 5 stars for our service. That besides, Ichiban Boshi is really a very affordable and value for money restaurant. For the ambiance and variety, I'm surprised it's not more expensive.

While you're here, always order our ice matcha. Do not settle for iced water, it will not do your meal justice. Being the drinks girl before, I can tell you happily that our matcha is from the finest powder and the purest water. A refreshing drink for any day.

Do not bother looking through the tiny menu. Order salmon sashimi, yellowtail, soft shell crab and chawanmushi. I have taken so many orders of these dishes that I'm convinced there is an addictive in them. These are the best sellers and they live up to their name.

For main courses, try anything soup based. Ichiban Boshi is a soup god, they can do no wrong with that. I love the aroma of the rice too. I have spent so many working hours just hopelessly looking at the food and crying on the inside.

Go to a less crowded branch so you have no competition for the sushi and to fully soak in the zen atmosphere of Ichiban. I recommend Centrepoint!

Fav place to go to for sushi!

Ichiban Boshi is definitely a good place to go to for quality sushi. They offer very unique sushi dishes such as Cheese Delight, which is a cheese & ham with cucumber maki and Golden Catch, which is fried dory fish and tartar sauce on the inside with rice and fried potato shavings on the outside. They were both very delicious despite my initial apprehension at the fusion sushi. It is also affordable at $2.40/plate. My sashimi was fresh too.

The service could be improved as the waitress serving me had difficulty understanding English and as a result, left out one of my orders. But it was alright as the chef quickly did up another sushi for me. Our requested mayo sauce took 2 reminders before it came and there was no apology.

However, despite the lacking service, I would definitely return for my sushi as it is just too good!

You have to try their Don Don Wazen !

Ichiban Boshi is one of my favourite Japanese restaurant that I love to patronised! There are many reasons why I love the restaurant so much!

Firstly, they offer a wide range of authentic Japanese Cuisine that are priced at an affordable price. They offer set meals, ramen and sushi.

I would strongly recommend you to try their Don Don Wazen, which consist of a chawanmushi, tempura, unagi rice bowl and a raw salmon rice bowl. It only costs $19.90++ for the Don Don Wazen! I feel it is super worth it as it is very filling and delicious!

And you can trust that they offers you good customer service too!

Good Japanese Food

Ichiban Boshi offers a wide range of Japanese food that is pretty authentic in my opinion.

I went there for dinner one day, and ordered the Mushroom Soba. It was a bowl of hot soba noodles with a variety of mushroom in a really fragrant broth. It was perfect for a rainy day. The soup felt very homely, and the noodles were smooth and tasty. There was a generous serving of mushroom as well.

The waiters were friendly and prompt to serve, enhancing the dining experience. It can get very crowded during dinner time, so be prepared to wait, or go at odd timings.

all time favourite japanese restaurant

I may be one of Ichiban Boshi's BIGGEST FAN. Despite many other decent Japanese restaurants available in Singapore, I still prefer Ichiban Boshi.

They have great service and are extremely attentive (NEX outlet). Though this outlet is always crazily packed, the service is never compromised. I remembered, on just my third visit there, their staff could even remember my special order. The queue at Ichiban Boshi is quite a turn off especially on peak hours. However, the queue moves relatively fast. Food are usually served within 15 minutes no matter how crowded the restaurant is.

These are the few things I recommend: Buttered shitake mushroom, potato salad (MUST TRY! It's extremely appetizing especially with their dressing), potato inari (MUST MUST TRY), Salmon head udon.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend Ichiban Boshi for desserts as the choices are quite limited and they aren't exactly worth the money for the taste. Overall, price wise on the sushi and main courses are quite reasonable in my opinion. Usually, I would purchase their cheesecakes(try the matcha flavour) from the counter as well! Surprisingly, they taste quite good for the price we are paying.

Avoid peak hours

I've always seen long queues outside Ichiban Boshi and was quite interested to try the food there. My chance came when my friends decided to dine there recently. Although they do not usually take reservations, my friend managed to call and book a table at the Centre Point branch. It was a good thing we did; the queue was horrendous!

The ambience of the restaurant is noisy and lively and if you are looking to dine at a quiet place with soft music playing in the background, this is not for you. During peak hours when the place is packed with patrons, food can take quite a while to be served. We had to wait quite a bit before we got our orders! While the staff are very efficient, they are always busy and on the move and trying to get their attention can be quite difficult.

My friends and I ordered set meals and I went for the curry cheese chicken set that came with rice, tempura prawns, miso soup and fruits. The curry cheese was quite unique but the chicken meat was nothing to rave about. Also, the portion of rice was quite little and I finished it before even finishing the curry cheese chicken. My friend's beef set tasted better though. The beef was not too thickly sliced and the blend of spices was really good. I felt the prices for the set meals were a bit high though, considering how the portion of food provided was not too much.

Given that there are so many other good Japanese restaurants out there, I wouldn't make Ichiban Boshi my go-to Jap restaurant. I still prefer Sushi Tei to this!
