Established in 1927, Ginza Bairin was the first Tonkatsu restaurant in Ginza, Japan. At Ginza Bairin, the main ingredient - Pork - is carefully selected, coated in traditional bread crumb seasoning and masterfully deep fried in premium salad oil to retain and highlight its award-winning texture, aroma and flavor.

try the kurobata items!

Ginza Bairin is one of the few places in Singapore that serves good kurobata, or black pig. The flavour is quite distinct from normal pork! I highly recommend the Special Black Pig Katsudon, where the pork cutlet is served with egg and sauce over rice. The sauce and egg is very well seasoned, very flavourful yet not too salty or overwhelming!

Although Ginza Bairin is often known for the black pig curry rice instead, I've tried that before and frankly don't think it remarkable. In fact, the strong flavour of the curry is heavy on the tastebuds, and I tire of it very quickly, after just a few mouthfuls.

Do note that the portions served are huge! I have a slightly smaller than average appetite, and am usually satiated after half a portion, and completely stuffed with three quarters.

Go for their Katsu Curry Don

I have revisited the outlet at Ion Orchard Food Hall several times, faithfully ordered my favourite dish there which is their Katsu Curry Don (both the black pork and the chicken katsu are nice)

Their Katsu are nice, really nice. Very crispy on the outside and the texture is smooth and great. The black pork katsu is especially tender and succulent. The curry isn't spicy so anybody can enjoy the Japanese curry at ease. If by any chance, you do not like curry, you can opt for their Katsu Don that do away with the curry but includes the same katsu cutlet. The tonkatsu ramen's soup base was too salty for me to handle, so I gave it a pass after trying it.

The price is quite affordable for a japanese restaurant, one normal main course wouldn't go over $20. I would visit again if I have a craving for katsu.
