Lower Price, Lower Quality.

"You get what you pay for" aptly summarises my experiences at Ichiban Sushi. Even from the naming itself, it is apparent that Ichiban Sushi is the 'younger brother' of sorts to Ichiban Boshi, both Sushi chains with similar concepts but this one being much cheaper. Naturally, when something becomes cheaper, you'd expect it's quality to be compromised, be it in terms of quality of food, service, or ambience. In this case, it's all three.

Now I'm not saying that the food at Ichiban Sushi is bad - it's not. Favorites like the Ichiban Don (okay, at least one of my favorites) are also available here, but I feel the taste is undermined by its presentation. Whereas at Ichiban Boshi the Ichiban Don comes in a very nice and classy container, the one here comes in a rice bowl which diminishes the visual treat you get of seeing so much raw salmon laid out in front of you.

The sushi available here is also somewhat similar to that of Ichiban Boshi, but again lacking the class that Boshi provides. It's puzzling, given that both the Sushi and Ichiban Don served here are at the exact same prices as at Ichiban Boshi. The experience eating these items is definitely compromised at Ichiban Sushi compared to Ichiban Boshi.

Nonetheless, Ichiban Sushi has many unique menu items that are of a considerably lower price than Ichiban Boshi. Whereas at the latter most sets start at a steep price of $18/19, the sets here start at $15 (Business Wazen, if I'm not mistaken) and their selection of Don, Soba, and Ramen also features more affordable selections.

Having said all this, I would choose Ichiban Boshi over Ichiban Sushi any day. Despite the visible difference in quality of service (the staff at Ichiban Sushi treat you like a customer at a casual quick sushi chain whereas at Boshi, the service is fitting for an above mid-tier Japanese restaurant) and ambience (the ambience at Ichiban Sushi is reminiscent of Sakae Sushi and honestly that's very off putting for me), the price difference is negligible. Unless you are a fan of the unique menu items Ichiban Sushi has (i.e. Salmon Mentai Wazen), I would recommend patronising the 'higher-end' Ichiban Boshi any day.

Lastly, a note about the iPads they recently added to their restaurant: my last visit to Ichiban Sushi at Plaza Sing saw these gizmos being introduced. Rather than enhancing my experience, they annoyed me thoroughly. The service staff refused to help me take my order and insisted that I use the iPads to place my order. Adding on to the annoyance, the iPads were chained to the wall in a manner such that I could hardly place it on the table. I fail to understand the need to chain the iPads to the wall when every other sushi chain that uses iPads do not in fact chain them to the wall. Perhaps they worry about people running off with them but the prospect of that is rather laughable in itself.

Such was my annoyance with their service and 'improvement' that I made a mental note not to return to this branch, or perhaps Ichiban Sushi altogether. Such is the fate of restaurants who mindlessly jump on the technological bandwagon.

Distaste at Service

Ichiban Sushi definitely serves good enough Japanese cuisine, value for money, as with their counter-part - Ichiban Boshi, although the Boshi branches really are that much better. And I'd tell you why.

Their service is appalling. I had horrible encounters. For one, it took the waiters ages to get to us. And I believe firmly that beverages are a basic and should be automatically served to customers as promptly as possible. Yet, the outlet I visited, required not one, not two, but multiple reminders for a simple cup of warm water and green tea. After what seemed like eons too, our food arrived, without the proper utensils that should have come together. This would normally have just been passed on as an unintended mistake but I was fueled by the beverage incident before. It didn't help that when I was ordering, the waitress nodded and said ok, only to have to refer to the menu and asking me to repeat every single order. It would have been alright if she asked me to wait or to speak slower. Oh, she didn't apologise either.

Although the food wasn't terrible, the service left a sour enough aftertaste. We are paying service charge, and if my money goes to such feeble attempts, then I'd much rather go for the supermarket option. No service charge, and lower prices.

But waiters, even part-time or new ones, represent their workplace. I would have been satisfied, or at least, appeased, by any effort they display or even a simple apology. Multiple similar encounters have just been too distasteful to my liking.

All that being said, it is my personal experience and might not apply to every chain/outlet.

Indulge!

Like a lazy Singaporean, it's 11.30 and I just woke up. A short trip to Jurong Point saw me whisked into Ichiban Sushi...
It was my first time there, and at first sight it held a striking resemblance to Sakae Sushi, another popular Japanese food chain - especially the conveyor belt displaying a variety of eye-catching Sushi.
Do not be fooled by the seemingly outrageous prices and the seemingly minuscule pictures. A 16 dollar meal was enough to stuff me until night. The combination meals were exceptionally sumptuous - Chawanmushi, Miso soup and salad to complete my lunch. My only problem was the Japanese names I'll never really understand.

Authentic Japanese Cuisine

Ichiban is one of those restaurants that i often find myself dining at with my family for dinner. Although it may be a little expensive from a student's point of view, it is definitely worth the money. It has really comfortable seats and quiet corners. I find myself very at home when i dine at Ichiban with my family. The staff are really polite and patient, and the service is good. The food is also served really quick and staff caters to the customer's needs efficiently.

The dishes over at Ichiban are also really fresh and mouth-watering. One would definitely return for a second meal. Overall, Ichiban not only offfers great japanese cuising, the service is good, and it is also really affordable and food are reasonably priced.

Food took too long to be served

There seems to always be a long queue at Ichiban Sushi each time I walk past. Yesterday, I finally chanced upon a short queue outside the restaurant and decided to give it a try to see what's the hype all about. The menu was quite impressive as they have got a wide variety of food for you to choose from, ranging from bento sets to ramen to sushi.

My family and I ordered 2 bento sets to share and some small side dishes too. Not sure if they are short handed but it took us quite a while to catch the attention of the staff. When we finally got our orders taken, it was a long 30minute wait before the first dish was served. To our dismay, the following dishes took a long while to be served too. When we asked the service crew to check our order for us, they went away and never came back. it wasn't a pleasant dining experience as we were constantly craning our necks to see if the next dish is ready etc. Probably that is why there is such  a long queue all the time.

Value-for-money sets

I love the sets that come with fruits, rice, miso soup, one main dish and appetiser. All these for about $20 only! However, I always find it difficult to finish given the huge portion. I love that some of the sets come with salmon sashimi and deep fried soft shell crab. I find it very value-for-money.

Service can be quite unattentive at times but that's because this restaurant is always very crowded during lunch and dinner. It can be quite hard to get them to refill the green tea. Ventilation is not good either. You'll go out smelling like the restaurant.

During non-peak hours they have promotions for udon that goes for about $5 each bowl. I have yet to try this, but I'll probably try it soon.

Mouth watering Japanese cuisine

I really like the food here at Ichiban Sushi. They seem to have every Japanese dish I usually eat, and they always have value-for-money set lunches with generous portions and good selections.

There was once they had this beef dish for their set lunch (no longer have it today, set lunch menu changed) and the beef was so tender, juicy and succulent, and it was pretty generous. The portion was big enough for me to share with someone else. The second set lunch item they had that time was chicken, I believe, so my mom and I ordered both and took bits and pieces of each dish, and it was so good! Each set lunch menu includes things like rice, fruits, soup, and so on, so it's really worth the money, whereas ordering a la carte from the standard menu can be a little bit pricey...

If you are looking for a good Japanese cuisine, be it lunch or dinner, remember to add Ichiban Sushi to your list of 'must try's' -- you won't regret dining here! Even if you just want a snack to takeaway, consider purchasing their delicious, sweet coronets which come in chocolate and vanilla flavour. Good stuff, really!

Good food that can be cheaper

This place serves a large variety of food ranging from the sushi conveyor belt to sushi combos to the japanese bento sets. The food is relatively good and rather unique but I personally feel that the food is priced a little expensive.

If one wishes to eat sushi. buying the ready made-to-go sushis will be more worth it as compared to eating in the restaurant itself.

Other than that, the mochi that are available at the cashier are one of my favorites. One can enjoy four different flavors of mochi - green tea, peanut, red bean and mango. My favorite flavor has always been the green tea, and I feel that it is a must try!

Not too bad

Japanese cuisine, one of my all-time favourites. The menu looks very attractive with different kind of bentos and ala-carte sushi at reasonable prices. I've visited the restaurant thrice, tried out different dishes each time.

IMHO, only the sushi there is good, especially bacon & egg maki.
There was once we ordered the don, the rice was just normal ones instead of japanese pearl rice and the manager told us it's supposed to be like that (I thought Japanese restaurant uses their own type of rice?!) . The breaded chicken was soggy too. The fried dishes are too oily.

Probably i didn't order the 'right' dishes, the food was just average. Service was ok.
I won't return to this place unless the other resaturants nearby are too crowded.

Sushi Tei is definitely much better.

Those sushi at takeaway counter is just yummy

When it comes to eating Japanese food, I become very picky. If the food doesn't satisfy me, I will not patronize it anymore. Since young, I’m attracted by the sushi at Ichiban takeaway counter. The rice of the sushi is just prefect, especially the vinegar. Either is it tasteless or there is too much vinegar inside the rice that cover the taste of the ingredients. The main reason why I like ichiban sushi is mainly because their sushi remains delicious even though the cost of making increases. Those crab/egg roll sushi is still at 50 cents while other sushi outlets increases it to 0.70-0.80 cents per pieces.

The increase in price would enable me to purchase a few more sushi that I’m craving for. Furthermore, the takeaway counter still offers Sashimi and other ingredients topping for the sushi. For example, egg, unagi etc. It is great for beginner like me who is interested in making sushi but is afraid of cooking the food wrongly due to the lag of experiences. All I need to do just to cook the rice and have fun rolling.

The sushi at the takeaway counter is worth trying even if you are just buying 1-2 pieces.
