Quality in decline
Ayam Penyet Ria was very good when it first opened at Joo Chiat. Back then most of the workers working there were Indonesians giving the place a level of authenticity. The last meal I had there last month at Lucky Plaza was not quite up to my liking.
I found that the ayam penyet that was served was way too oily and the sambal was a little rancid tasting. The only saving grace was the Rawon or stewed beef in keluak soup. The rawon still tasted as good as I remembered it to be.
Somehow, the outlet is still quite packed. Maybe, the diners do not know of smaller eateries selling Surabaya cuisine on the levels above it in Lucky Plaza that serves food I dare say much better in taste and consistency and authenticity,

Not for the faint hearted. Though i must say the chilli is good to boot! Just that only those who can really take spicy foods would be able to take the spiciness of it. Pair the chilli with the crispy but not oily chicken, I'm in heaven.
The fish however, I thought was of mediocre standard only. It was rather dry and lacked taste. Unlike the succulent chicken, it didn't wow me and I didn't touch it anymore after a few bites.
Also, their gado gado fared pretty well. Drenched in a rich, peanut sauce, it complemented well with the crispy hot ingredients underneath the peanut blanket. The keropok given together was a nice touch.
There were long queues when it first opened up, but i guess the hype has died down, time to revisit!
This joint is a victim of its own popularity. I’ve eaten here before it became the over-crowded, over-rated monster that it is today. As far as the food (ayam penyet, bakar penyet etc) goes, the standard has dropped somewhat both in term of quality and quantity. The lack of vegetable options on the menu has always been a quibble of mine with ayam penyet places and Ria is no exception.
The drinks are downright scary. Very synthetic looking and loaded with enough sugar to give an elephant diabetes.
This branch is notorious for its poor service, but I am always quite forgiving of serving staff. Hey, if you had to work as a waitress in a crowded restaurant wearing some ugly uniform and getting yelled at by diners you’d be grouchy too.
I always go to Ayam Penyet Ria to satisfy my cravings for a spicy meal. The reason is... free flow of their fiery sambal! It's really good that they give free flow of chilli and the chilli taste is consistent for both branches. They have a branch in Jurong Point as well. I find the service much better in JP as the staff in the Lucky Plaza branch are a little unfriendly and on the rude side.
My usual order is the catfish penyet. When I'm lucky, I would get a really big catfish but on other days, the size of the catfish is still acceptable. I simply adore the crispy skin. The ayam penyet is not bad as well. Apparently, the avocado juice is a very popular drink back in Indonesia. It's drizzled with chocolate, which mixes well with the avocado. For chilli lovers, you should give it a try. I guarantee you would fall in love with the chilli!

Flavourful Indonesian food
Ayam Penyet Ria serves Indonesian food such and are most famous for their Ayam Penyet. They have numerous outlets in Singapore and I’ve only visited the one at NEX as it is near my home. I’ve only had the Ayam Penyet there so far and it is delicious!!! The chicken is fried perfectly, golden brown crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The black sauce drizzled over the chicken and rice adds an extra punch to the whole dish and gives the dish an authentic Indonesian flavour.
When it first hit the stores in Singapore, it was extremely popular as it is delicious and cheap. However, the latter no longer holds today. Ayam Penyet Ria has been increasing the prices of their dishes - a plate of Ayam Penyet now costs $7+! Also, I discourage people from ordering takeaways as the quality of food drops drastically. The chicken crust becomes slightly soft and the rice soggy - probably due to condensation in the styrofoam box.
Overall though, if you are craving affordable Indonesian food, Ayam Penyet Ria is a convenient way to satiate that craving!
BEST AYAM PENYET
Ayam Penyet Ria is hands down my favourite place to have ayam penyet. I absolutely love their sambal, it's the best I've tasted so far. But, it's ridiculously spicy so take care!
I've not actually tried their other food items because they're known for their ayam penyet. On a side note, their drinks are really overpriced and simply not enough to sustain you throughout the whole meal. The amount of ice tea they provide is little so you end up having to purchase another glass of water.
Their prawn crackers are my favourite appetizers. I've been trying to find it outside but to no avail. Nonetheless, the ayam penyet at Ayam Penyet Ria is so worth it.
Fried chicken goodness
My obsession and love for chicken has propelled me to dine at Ayam Penyet Ria a dozen times. I come to this restaurant for a fuss free fried chicken dining experience. The service is nothing to rave about but the prices have more or less served as some sort of indication. The smashed chicken breast, my favourite order, has hardly disappointed though.
One of the best parts of the meal has got to be the fried crumbs — it feels like heaven in my mouth when eaten together with rice. The affordability and location (right smack in the middle of town!) makes it a worthwhile visit.
Waaah got free water
I had my first Ayam Penyet at the foodcourt in AMK HUB. And trust me, for someone who grows up in a family viewing chilli as a necessity, the chilli dished with this is simply "shiok".
I like how the chicken was coated with a different kind of bread crumbs from the typical fast food restaurants, in addition to the generous dishing out of bread crumb toppings on the rice. Writing this review is making me salivate now!!
The best part is, there was a free cup of cold water with the ayam penyet, just in case you couldn't take the super hot chilli paste. My first thought was: What good service:)
Even though the price was a little tad expensive, the portion was just nice for me. I would say go for it if you are someone who likes something different.

I was impressed by their food the first time I was there. I remembered I had ayam penyet and tofu goreng. The chicken is tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. The best part is the chili. Although it is very spicy but i just can't stop eating it. So I make it a point to go back to the restaurant once in a while.
However I feel that their standard had dropped tremendously in terms of food quality and service. The portion was small and they served cold food. Their service is horrendous! The staff is rude and unhelpful. Being popular doesn't give you the right to be arrogant.
Spicy chili, but good!
Had my dinner today at the outlet in Far East Plaza. A pretty spacious restaurant filled with people, mostly Indonesians. My second time trying it and i only remember the chili was spicy and the portion is kinda small.
Food was served shortly after ordering and paying at the counter. The service was alright and i immediately started digging in since it was my first meal of the day.
The chicken was well marinated, cripsy on the outside and tender within. It tasted slightly above average though, nothing fantastic. I like the chili! It was awesome, really spicy but addictive.
Do not touch the lime juice, too sweet it was just awful.
Ayam Penyet wise, i'll still prefer the stall at the hawker centre opposite Vivocity. Cheaper and more tasty.
Crispy chicken with spicy chilli
I went to the Jurong Point branch after my family keep telling me how good the penyet is and how spicy the chilli is. So after many times of arrangement, i finally had a chance to have a bite.
As we got there, the queue was pretty long, and we waited about 30 minutes before we got a seat. Once we sat down, the staff passed us the menu to choose from. As the outlet was so busy, there really was not any service to talk about as the staff were rushing to fulfill everybody's requests. As we had a table of 6, we ordered almost all the main dishes that was available.
The dishes came pretty fast, and it was still crispy and hot when it was served. The fish was crispy and fresh and it disappeared in a very short time. The chicken penyet was good too, but i thought it should be "penyet" more. It was not too oily yet still very tender.
Most importantly, the chilli. oh my, i think the best about this place is not really the penyet, but the chilli itself. It was really spicy and strong and I absolutely love the chilli, as it gave me a strong kick and woke me up. It was spicy and added a lot of flavour to the food.
Would i go back to this place for penyet, probably. Would I go back for the chilli, absolutely!
Ayam Penyet stands for chicken rice and here, this dish is served with an Indonesian twist to its original recipe. I visited the outlet with a few friends some time back, and the service we received was terrible. The waitress was rude and unhelpful & they were unwilling to even explain some of their dishes. The food however, is amazing! I had the chicken rice and there literally was more fried chicken compared to rice!! Their soups were spiced and seasoned very well too. The only bother was the poor service, but otherwise, its an excellent place to catch a quick meal!
My favorite place to have ayam penyet
I love the famous indonesia dish which has become a national dish for them. That would be the Nasi Ayam penyet and one place serves one of the best so far.
It is always served fresh and the sambal is simply addictive. The chicken is fried to perfection and the sambal has a balance of spicy and sweet. End the meal with a glass of Avocado juice and you will feel as if being transported to Indonesia.
Service wise i can rate it only as fairly okay. Its such a waste that they have good food but their staff are not very friendly. Sometimes i feel that our request are being ignored whenever we need someone to attend to us.
If you are into good Nasi Ayam penyet, i reckon you should have a try at this outlet but if you are into good service then its not the right place to go. Whichever way you decide.
Never going back.
I went to the branch at Lucky Plaza only last week and I had the worst experience ever.My friends and I felt like we were some outcasts in the restaurant. We have heard many people raving over this place and we thought of giving them a try.Little did we know it was our first and our last time there.
The staff there was very unfriendly and they had all of them had very thick make up on,They threw their menus on our tables and walked off and as we did not know we had to order at the cashier,we raised our hands to question one of the staff.She rolled her eyes at us and walked over and than with a very unhappy face,asked us what we wanted.We told her that we wanted to order and she retorted with a snort to tell us to proceed to the counter.She made us feel really stupid but since we were too hungry,we kept quiet.
The food took more than 5 mins to arrive even though the place was not crowded at that time.Again,they threw our food on the table as if they were very unhappy to serve us.I was hoping that the food could at least compensate for the bad service we were faced with but sadly,the chicken that was fried for us tasted so hard that I only ate half of my meal.
As compared to a very famous Ayam Penyet stall at Changi Village, this one was horrible. Bad service,bad experience,bad taste.
