3 words. Red Velvet Waffles.
I stumbled upon this café while searching for dessert after lunch one day,and given my constant craving for waffles, I was instantly attracted to the sign board that said students get an extra scoop of ice cream free on their waffles. A free scoop of ice cream, who can resist THAT?
Peering at their menu, I saw a variety of waffles and finally settled on their Red Velvet Waffles. Under the students’ promotion, I got one set of Red Velvet Waffles with 2 scoops of ice cream and a drink for $10. I enjoyed it not for the waffle itself, although it was pretty decent, but for the cream cheese slathered between the two halves. It transformed an otherwise average waffle into a unique and creamy masterpiece.
On another trip, I tried their Bamboo Charcoal Waffle with lemon curd but was sorely disappointed. The lemon curd was overly sour and made my stomach churn a little. The waffle was also slightly soggy and soft; that was a sad gloomy day.
However, despite that one disappointment, I came back a few times after that just to have their Red Velvet Waffles! Who knows, I might have tried the Bamboo Charcoal one on a bad day.
Was there, and was square
Oblong was one of the first places where I had ice-cream and waffles. Having had my fill at Chomp Chomp one day, I was anxious to revisit the cafe in order to test it against all the other waffles I’ve ever tried since.
The waffles set available still wowed me - Oblong offered a set of a waffle, a scoop of ice-cream as well as a drink, for only $10! Such value-for money often gets me really excited, and I got busy trying all the flavours, which the staff were very friendly about. Eventually, I settled with the Earl Grey Lavender paired with Red Velvet Waffles with Cream Cheese. Sadly, the waffles were no longer to my liking. On top of being really small, they were not as crispy as I would like. The music was too loud for my friend and I to properly relax in the cafe, so we quickly finished off the waffle to escape to the myVillage rooftop.
Affordable, yes. But with Serangoon Gardens’ range of cafes, I would say skip this one, and have ice-cream somewhere else.
Red velvet waffle!
Situated at an alley behind Serangoon Gardens area, this ice cream cafe may not be very prominent to many and may be a little difficult to locate. However, upon stepping in, you would instantly feel at ease as Oblong is a very cozy and intimate little cafe.
The variety of ice cream flavors there is bound to make you crack your head for at least a good 5 minutes. Sea salt caramel, strawberry cheesecake, green tea... You name it, you got it! There are some wacky flavors as well. The most unique and eye-catching item on their menu has got to be their red velvet waffles! Red velvet lovers would love this for sure, as there is even a layer of red velvet cream cheese in between the waffles so you can taste red velvet in every single bite. However, the previous time I went, the red velvet waffles were not fluffy on the inside nor crunchy on the outside. My friends and I were pretty disappointed with the quality of the waffles and we thought that the only redeeming part was the red velvet cream. The ice cream was not too bad, but not fantastic either. I guess I would not be making a trip down again anytime soon just for their ice cream, as the cafe is quite out of the way and I don't find myself craving for their ice cream or waffles either.
