Upscale diner with the high prices but not the quality of food to match
db Bistro Moderne has been a restaurant I've wanted to try for ages, after seeing all the exquisite photos of their burgers online. My sister and aunt had forewarned me that it wasn't so good, but I had to see for myself. Turns out, they were right. db Bistro Moderne is an upscale diner with the upscaled prices but not the quality of food to match.
We ordered the steak tartare, which was gorgeously plated but disappointingly, didn't have the taste didn’t match the presentation at all. It was in fact, quite tasteless.
For mains, we ordered the New England Casserole with seafood and fennel sausage. This was definitely the highlight of the night. Although I was expecting some kind of carbs (I clearly am not atas enough to know that casseroles come in different variations!) I was pleasantly surprised by this version which was solely seafood served in broth. The seafood was incredibly fresh, whilst the soup was incredibly flavourful & light.
Lastly, we ordered the Frenchie Burger (beef patty with pork belly) but was wrongly given the Yankee burger which consisted of only a beef patty. The beef was unfortunately undercooked and under seasoned and did not resemble those pictures online at all!

Nothing spectacular, except for the prices
Of course, once you step foot into MBS, you'd expect the prices of the restaurants there to be as high as the building. (Please excuse the lame joke)
I think i ordered a steak from DB and my mother had pumpkin soup. Both of which were good, but i felt it was not justified for its high price. I probably could get a similar quality steak at Angus Steakhouse at Ngee Ann City.
However, that was not the most shocking part. We order water (which we presumed would be normal boiled water) which then turned out to be Fiji bottled water (Great water though, always have been a fan of it). This turned out to be about 12 dollar a bottle.. which constituted of about 1/12 of the entire bill.
DB offers great service and ambience, but these are easily offered at any other steakhouses. But i guess it'd be fine to splurge once in a while to experience fine dining at such a prestigious restaurant.
