nostalgic, familiar bak kut teh
Balestier is an area saturated with Bak Kut Teh stores, so it’s not easy to choose a favourite. Personally I always find myself at Ah Hak Bak Kut Teh to satisfy my cravings, and it’s been around since my parents’ time. Call it nostalgia, but of all the Teochew-style ‘meat bone soups’ Ah Hak’s is one I’ll never get tired of.
Ah Hak’s Bak Kut Teh soup has a distinct peppery flavour, not overpoweringly spicy or herby and very fragrant. The hawkers are all very friendly, and will refill your bowls with piping hot soup regularly. The pork however is quite tough, which is where their Bak Kut Teh is somewhat lacking. They also offer a variety of dishes like pig trotters in black sauce and preserved vegetables, which are all not bad.
Altogether Ah Hak’s is a humble, unassuming hawker store, usually patronised by regulars who’ve been with them for years. While I wouldn’t dare claim that they serve the best Bak Kut Teh in Singapore, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to friends for a good, solid bowl of Bak Kut Teh.
