Founded by Mr Seah Boon Lock over 50 years ago as a humble stall selling duck rice, Yu Kee has made great strides over the decades as a premier seller of duck-rice in the food landscape of Singapore. It has recently expanded the range of its products to include the brands 'XO Minced Pork Noodle', 'Shi Jia' and 'Suka Ramai'. However, the duck rice remains its signature dish.

A bland taste of awesomeness

My favourite food to ta-pao home from the local Kopitiam nowadays would be Yu Kee Duck Rice. It is an instinctive reflex upon seeing their stall and the braised ducks on display, not to mention the retail assistant who knows my order.

Yu Kee specialises in braised duck, everything from duck rice to kway chap and even duck noodles. It is a stall of choice for a few reasons.

Firstly, food from the stall is always a healthy choice. If you notice closely, all the ingredients used in preparation of its dishes does not involved frying but generally steaming. In the case of the ducks, the skin may be relatively oily, but rest assured its not old thats a few days old. You can actually request the removal of the skin, but I feel that its the best part of the duck.

Secondly, the taste is good! The sauce used to braise the duck and prepare the rice is relatively bland and hence not too sweet. Moreover, each duck rice set comes with egg, tofu and beans. When coupled with their delicious sambal chilli, especially mixed with the rice and duck meat, the meal tastes simply heavenly.

Thirdly, one box of rice/noodles etc is worth the price. Though the price of one box of duck rice has raised over the years from $2.50 to $3.50, the amount given is relatively worth it. However, i would note that amount given vs price would make it teetering on the brink already and any further raises would discourage customers.

Overall, worth a try!
