Fish and Chips, anyone?
Being a Republic Polytechnic (RP) student myself, I would have to say that the Western Food Stall at Block W1 is simple the best and is definitely one of my favourites! Of all the stalls in the canteen, this stall has always been the stall experiences the longest queues during our breaks, lunch time, and even after school.
There are a lot of varieties on the menu and giving only one a try is definitely not enough! My usual order would be their Fish and Chips because theirs really left a deep impression in me. What I like about their version of Fish and Chips is that, theirs isn’t oily at all yet light and crispy. And portion wise? They are simply huge. So, be sure to share it with a friend if you’re a small eater. The batter coating on the Dory fish fillet is not too thick and it does not come out as spongy or crumbly like the usual ones we eat from other western stalls. Also, they added bread crumbs on the fillets which give you an extra crunch with every bite and the meat of the fish is juicy and simply mouth-watering too! Moreover, you can request for sides such as scrambled eggs, mash potatoes or fries as your side as well for only a dollar.
Just so you know, this western stall is no longer at Block W1 instead it has been moved to the north food court at Block E6. Definitely a must try!
awesome food for a school canteen
I have only started schooling in Republic Poly for 4 months, and my classmates have been talking about how good the western food at the South food court (near block W1) is. They have mention that it is better than the other food court’s western food stall. My closest friend had told me that the chicken chop there is huge and is worth the money. So, I went to try their chicken cutlet with spaghetti, and my god, it was really good!
It was about 5 bucks, and the portion is a lot. No wonder there is always a long queue there, but when I bought my food, there was no queue. So, I was pretty lucky. I have got my food fast and was surprised. In all the western food stalls I have went in my life, this one is the fastest when it comes to service.
There are a lot of varieties of western food and I think trying one is not enough. It is worth going there many times, and Republic Poly is open to public. So, no worries!
I really like the western food from the western food stall at Republic Polytechnic. Every time during lunch time where i will go and eat with my friends, I do not really but from the western food stall as there will always be a long queue at the stall. Seeing the long queue makes me think that I have to wait for a long time, However, when I tried queuing for the food with my friends once, the service was so fast that you do not have to wait long and you get your food.
The food are rather cheap and I think the serving is reasonable. You can choose to add in extra food like scrambled eggs or exchange for other food, like exchange fries with scrambled eggs. I like the fries from the western food stall as well. It costs only $1 and you can a big bagful of fries.
Cheap, good, but rather small portions
Situated in a school canteen, its a unique experience to be able to eat there as a member of the public. You find yourself unconsciously trying to blend in and act like a student. Fair enough, since you are also eating decent western food at a low price that students can afford. Their service is fast, with you getting your food within a couple of minutes of ordering, though this is because that they have their food prepared beforehand, so its just a matter of adding the sauces to the respective food.
The food is decent. I usually get black pepper chicken chop with spaghetti or fries. The chicken is tender and the sauce mildly spicy with hints of black pepper. The spaghetti and fries are average though, since the spaghetti is just boiled spaghetti with canned tomato sauce poured on and the fries are frozen fries found in supermarkets.
Their portions are a little small but still value for money, given the very cheap price. Since this is a school canteen, remember to return your trays and cutleries to the respective return stations!
3 years on and still go back for it
After graduating from Republic Polytechnic and going into National Service, i never thought i wuld ever go back to RP for its western food. Guess i was wrong.
When i went back recently, it was as if time stood still, food quality is still as amazing as when i had when i was studying. Be sure to check out any of my recommendations. My usual order would be chicken chop with scrabbled egg, mash potato and fries on the side.
Totally worth the money i spend on it and is highly recommendable for the energy starving muscle before or after a gym session. May even consider it sinful due to its mushroom sauce on top of the mash potato and its chicken chop.
Great food with reasonable price but a no- no to the service
As a western food lover, I find that getting a plate of fish and chop in this stall is far more than worthwhile.
With only $3-$4, you can get a big plate of fish and chips or black pepper chicken chop and go back to your class, feeling satisfied with the food.
Every time I ended my class, I would always find something to snack while walking on the way home, and most of the time, I would visit the Western Stall in W1 to buy a packet of $1 french fries. Cheap and tasty.
Everything is great but I feel that the service has more room of improvement. Sometimes, I feel that the stall is shorthanded and it is difficult to accomodate to the students during break periods.
Even after a long queue and orders taken, my friends and I still have to wait for quite some time before our food is ready. On one or a couple of occasions, the order got mixed up. And yeah, we have to wait longer.
However, apart from that, everything is great. Many times, I would always tell my friends that the food is worth the wait. Yes! thats how great the food is.
I would definitely recommend everyone, especially western cuisine fans to try patronizing this stall. Well, perhaps, just come during off peak hour where there is shorter queue or even no queue at all. Then you can get your food served quickly and you will definitely enjoy every bits of it.
Good western cuisine at an affordable price for a student!
S$4. That is the more or less the amount that you will spend on a meal of Western cuisine in this local polytechnic school in Singapore. The canteen can be easily seen as you enter the school through its main walkway. The stall has received recognition from a local Chinese food programme in search of good and affordable food. The owner had proudly displayed photos of them and the show hosts.
Aglio Olio, Spaghetti Bolognese, Chicken Chop, Grilled fish with Sambal, Fish and Chips are just some of the appetising dishes that the stall has to offer between S$2.50 to S$4. Each dish comes with a spoonful of fresh vegetables and a choice between fries, Spaghetti Bolognese or mashed potatoes. Side dishes such as scrambled eggs come at an additional cost of S$1.
Personally, I would recommend you to try the Chicken Cutlet. It is juicy, crispy and tender. It is certainly one of the best Chicken Cutlets I ever had for that kind of affordable price. The serving size is as big as your hand’s palm. Have it with Spaghetti Bolognese, it will definitely leave you feeling satiated and satisfied throughout the rest of the day.
A downside to the dishes though, is that the foods are often served when it is already cold, with the exception of the scrambled eggs (and sometimes spaghetti). If you are not a fussy eater who prefers his/her food warm, it won’t pose any problems. The dishes are prepared before the lunch hour crowd arrives, to avoid patrons from waiting too long.
The cashier lady is very fast in returning your change to you, so you have to be fast too in multi-tasking between pouring the sauces on your plate and receiving the money change.
Even so, you have been warned. This canteen is filled with a variety of cuisines available; it is usually populated with students and staffs during the lunch hour and after dismissal school hours (4pm), so make sure you "chop" a seat first. Stall is open from 8 am to 8 pm daily on weekdays and closed on weekends. The place is open to public.
One of the best, and value-for-money western food I've ever had!
I had been always eating this store ever since I was schooling here for the past 3 years. I always enjoyed eating their Fried Chicken Cutlet and Chicken Chop. However, I prefer the Fried Chicken Cutlet the most. Usually during the students lunch time (between 12pm to 2pm), it always has a long queue. However, it is still very affordable as it costs around $4.50 per main dish. For spaghetti lovers, you might want to change the fries to spaghetti, for it to go with, without any extra charge.
The portion of both the Fried Chicken Cutlet and Chicken Chop was more than expected, given their price. For the Fried Chicken Cutlet, it is crispy on both the surface and juicy in the inside. The meat is also very tender. Whereas for the chicken chop, what I liked most about it was the taste where the Chicken Chop is eaten together with the gravy. Even after finishing it, the taste will still linger in your mouth. That is how appetizing it is!
If you were to eat in the morning, you might want to add scrambled eggs. Their scrambled eggs are comparable to MacDonald's Big Breakfast’s scrambled eggs! Also, remember to sprinkle salt on it too, just like how you eat Macdonald's scrambled eggs!
In conclusion, I would strongly recommend the Chicken Cutlet and their scrambled eggs and they never fail to satisfy my hunger for good and cheap western food, if you don't mind squeezing for seats with the students during their break time!
Cheap western food!
I have been to this school before and have reviewed about one of the stalls at the other canteen. But there is something about this western stall. It is the most affordable one in Singapore.
The menu was attractive and caught my eyes when I was at the canteen. All the food came in different sets. They have chicken, grilled or fried fish and sirloin steak. All of these come with either fries or mashed potatoes or spaghetti. The price is very reasonable, ranging from $3.50 to $4.50. They have ala carte food such as Spaghetti of different flavors and also side dishes such as scrambled eggs.
I ordered sirloin steak with mashed potatoes. I paid $3.90 for it. The staff is very friendly and I like communicating with one of them. My order came and it was on a big plate. The portion is right for one person to consume.
I found a place to seat and started eating it. The steak is tender and there weren't much fats so the eatable areas are quite generous. I like the mashed potatoes a lot. It's better than KFC or Popeyes. It has a perfect soft texture and the gravy is nice too. It doesn't taste too peppery or salty.
If you're looking for a cheap western food, this is the place for you.
