Great tasting and affordable
As someone who has been vegetarian for 22 years, I am vehemently against those who insist that vegetarian food is difficult to get and mostly not that nice. And thus, to end this tirade of comments, I have decided to talk about my personal go-to haunt for simply exciting and affordable vegetarian hawker food. Tucked away in Pipit road are a bunch of hawker stalls selling a variety of food.
The particular stall I speak of is named Zhoo Zhai Zhai vegetarian. All the stalls are opened till the wee hours of the mornings, especially during the weekends. Now let me get to their extremely extensive menu. Yes, they have the basic hokkien mee, hor fun and fried rice that seems to be the standard for most hawker stalls. However, their hotplate vegetarian deer meat is one of their most titillating dishes.
Their vegetarian satays are usually bought by the dozens because of the soft meat and yet have a nice crunchy bite to it. But as for my personal favourites, their veg szechuan chicken and veg sambal fish are the best on the menu! Both only to be attempted by those who are not afraid of a bit of biting spicy after taste! The service is quick and extremely friendly. The staff are always quick to find you a seat during the peak hours and also help you get your cutleries in order. Above all, the prices are extremely affordable, and a satisfying dinner for a family of four could only cost up to 20-40 dollars for up to 4 dishes! I have been visiting this stall for almost 17 years now and their standard has only improved. Most importantly, for all these years and many more years to come this stall will always be my favourite comfort food and in many ways, remind me of home.
