Nineties Market

As we grow up, we acquire new things, grow out of our old ones, and eventually lose them. Things that used to be commonplace are now rare novelties: the ‘baitu’ white rabbit sweets that were every primary school kid’s favourite, the icing gem biscuits, the iconic small packs of super rings in SPY bags before Cheezels and Cheetos came into the picture…

So when I stepped into a quaint little gift and collector’s shop in Haji Lane called Craft Assembly, it was like a throwback into the daily life of a nineties to early 2000s me. There were stuffed pillow badges of Super Rings, white rabbit sweets, miniature ang ku kueh models and even a tote bag with the childhood favourite $1 ice cream in rainbow bread printed on it. There’s nothing quite like a miniature model to jolt the surge of familiarity and nostalgia - what better gift to surprise your friends with than a shared memory?
