From socks to ice cream, everything you could need
Being from the UK, I’ve always known what Marks and Spencer's is about and the kind of food and products that they produce and sell. I didn’t however, know that M&S was in Singapore until I moved and accidentally wandered across it one afternoon, blissful in knowing that my love for Percy Pigs would no longer become long distance. It’s a bit of a common joke that M&S food is ridiculously fancy, a microwave meal cannot ever seem high class yet they just won’t stop trying, and a part of me loves the middle class determination over a microwave meal. Even their own brand crisps are fancy, in flavours that Lays would never dream of trying to recreate, and I always leave with a full basket of treats.
The food and the clothes are in contrast to one another. The food is just for treats, something you can afford to buy yourself to every now and again, whereas the clothes are pretty much Mum-basics, I don’t treat myself to them, I just buy them when I need essentials. Some products are okay, but it’s clear that they target the older generation with their designs, but I always come when I need essentials like tights or underwear. The pants are brilliant, they don’t lose their stretchiness or fray at all, and the bras are also really good, but don’t try finding any unless you’re a C cup or under. If you’re any bigger, it’s granny bras or nothing I’m afraid.
I never leave M&S empty handed. Whether it’s a pair of pants and some black tights or some over priced but delicious ice cream, M&S is always there to bring a little bit of home to Singapore.
Not another atas store
Marks and Spencer has always been just another atas store in my eyes until I stumbled upon their food hall. It is surprising to find such affordable food in a place that sells such expensive clothes. The Marks and Spencer food hall sells mainly desserts and pastries, and their range of candies are worth a try too.
They sell one of the most amazing chocolate lava cakes I’ve ever tasted. The exterior is spongy and moist, and the molten chocolate oozes out from inside when cut. It tastes so good and the chocolate is so rich and flavourful, unlike so many diluted ones I’ve tried. The lemon cheesecake is also worth a try if you’re craving for a tart and tangy dessert. Fresh and creamy, the cheesecake has also earned a spot on my list of favourite desserts.
I occasionally treat myself to a packet of Marks and Spencer candy, among which I like the caramels best. They are sweet, sticky and chewy, making it great exercise for the jaws. They have occasional sales especially during Christmas, so grab a pack on your way out.
I constantly dread a trip into Marks & Spencer as their food is just too good to resist, which means I'll completely let loose and purchase everything off the shelves. It's worth the hurting wallet though! M&S has really a really stunning collection of food that taste so good, from their cookies to their cooking ingredients.
I especially love their caramel chocolate sweets. The moment you sink your teeth into the chocolate that isn't too overpowering, a gooey caramel oozes out slowly and coats your tongue. It's basically bliss in small, bite-sized pieces.
They are wrapped in a shiny red packaging without any logo on it (not that M&S has an ugly logo, but it really feeds the minimalist in me) that makes great small gifts to surprise others with. I often buy a pack and distribute them in school to share the love.
Good Quality Apparels and Food
I like Marks & Spencer for their variety and quality. Even though some of the items there can be quite expensive, I am still willing to pay for them as their comfort level and quality is guaranteed no matter what I buy.
My favourite section has got to be their food section. The selection of snacks and biscuits inside are wonderful, and I LOVE their biscuits, especially the chocolate digestive biscuits which are cheap and delicious. Even their original flavoured biscuits taste good too. Also, I like the jams selection offered by Marks & Spencer, which are of high quality and taste way better than those bought from other marts and stores.
The food section will also have regular promotions, where food packages are on sale, and products near their expiry dates are sold at ridiculously low prices! These are times when I end up buying lots of food products because who wouldn't want good food for low prices?
Love their food section!
Always heading down to a Marks & Spencer outlet to check out their food section, more specifically, their cookies, chocolates and potato chips aisles. M&S offers a unique collection of such sinful treats that you cannot find elsewhere! Needless to say, they are delicious! I especially love their viennese biscuits, light and buttery, it just make you feel so blessed. But, I think they stopped bringing in the raspberry viennese biscuits which is my all time favourite, or perhaps it varies based on outlets. If you ever see it in store, you must get it!
Some bigger stores offer various jams, teas and cooking ingredients such as spaghetti and its sauces and other condiments. They even have caramel in a jar that you can just buy off from the shelves and I was quite shocked about it when I saw it at first. The things you can find here are things you can hardly find anywhere else, maybe you can find some in Cold Storage but most of the things sold here are imported and if you are whipping up western cuisines, you can try your luck getting some of the ingredients here.
Apparel wise, I like how they have a wide variety from various brands and they are usually follow a simple style with great quality. They are, however, in the mid-high price range. The only thing I don't like about M&S is that their stores are always very cold, for unknown reasons.
All in all, M&S is a store that I enjoy going to, even if it means just going in to look at their food section and not getting anything from it.
Ready to claim its throne!
I thought this day would never come but I’m glad to say that Marks & Spencers clothing line has finally improved! I would definitely recommend anyone who is not as skinny as me to check it out. M&S had always been infamously known for its boring and dull line and that’s why it was always overlooked.
But on my recent trip to the shop I was surprised by how their winter collection has improved. I wouldn’t say every clothing item is fashionable, but most of it is! I even found this adorable, glamorous sweater with sequins that would dress up any normal mundane outfit. Unfortunately I can only dream of finding my size there.
Shortbreads, Custard creams, Ginger Snaps, chocolates. Food heaven that’s what it is. M&S is well known for its toiletries and baked goods. One thing to take note of before purchasing the baked goods would be its expiry date which is usually close since it’s fresh. What I love most is their shortbreads. It’s purely made of butter and flour. Definitely a guilty pleasure. A few pieces wouldn’t hurt right? Right….
Anyways even though I usually hurry to the food section, their gift sets in the toiletries section are perfect presents to give your loved ones for any occasion!
real sinful snacks and sweets
I think it's hard to shop at M&S for clothes because they are in Western sizes, and they are more office-wear, hence failing to cater to the younger crowd.
On the other hand, I think youths are mainly attracted by their range of edible goods, especially their baked goods and sweets. I, for one, am a sucker for their scottish shortbread fingers. No matter how unhealthy and sugary and fattening and calorie-laden, I can never resist one when I see it. They are great as a snack dipped in milk.
I also like their famous Percy Pigs, soft chewy gummies with fruit flavours. However, their sweets are on the expensive side and should be enjoyed occasionally.
During the special seasons such as Halloween and Christmas, many of their goods go on offer, and new products are sometimes added. I especially love Christmas products, as the designs and packaging becomes really aesthetically appealing.
I already look forward to Christmas shopping and getting my hands on those pretty tin cans that package their cookies.
Excellent Pants, Mid-Range Office Clothes, High Price-Tag, Excellent Service
I used to think that Singapore has a dearth of decent ladies pants for office wear. Many pants are either too tight or too flair. Many ladies pants also do not have front pockets, which to me look unnatural because men's pants come with front pockets. When I first started working, I only wore dresses and skirts because I could not find suitable pants. Until I visited Marks & Spencer.
Marks & Spencer is the only company I know that manufactures perfect ladies' pants (for me!) for office wear. Cutting for pants are excellent, and many of them come with front pockets! Many of my pants come from Marks & Spencer.
For office wear, other than pants, they also sell tops, and suits. I buy tops from them occasionally, suits never. This is not because they do not have good suits, but because their suits are too large for me. Prices are on the high side for mid-range quality clothes.
I would recommend Marks & Spencer if you are shopping for business and casual attire and if you have the budget. Marks & Spencer is part of the Robinson group, so service is excellent.
Great place to shop for snacks, bad place to shop for clothes.
The first reason I enter into Marks and Spencer is for the food section. Marks and Spencer provides brilliant quality of biscuits, chocolates and snacks that you can't find elsewhere. They are good ideas for gifts during Christmas occasions, New Years or even birthdays as they are nicely and decently packaged. Their biscuits and chocolates are highly rich of either butter or chocolate and it definitely appeals for dairy lovers like me.
The next reason I shop in Marks and Spencer is for their toiletries and perfumes. Their floral bath soaps which consists of a wide variety mainly roses, lavender and China Blue, sticks and lingers on your skin for a long while. Their Eu De Toilette perfumes - for both men and women - triggers a sense of elegance and class to whomever that is using it. It reflects the main positioning of Marks and Spencer, elegance and class.
The classical music that is playing softly in the background, the less number of people who tend to shop around, and pleasant signature smell sums up to a great ambience.
However, even as regular shopper, I can't help but to find that the collection of clothings aren't up to my taste. They are classified as dull and boring to me, because of its limited colours and very simple designs. Apart from that, none of the clothes actually fit me nicely and I think they are too costly for such pieces. For a similar price, I could have gotten something more sophisticated from Armani Exchange.
Skip the clothes, get the food!
Clothes at M&S are quite ugly, if you ask me. You won't find bright colours or interesting designs there. Well, you do find interesting prints, but not the good kind. I'm surprised that M&S dares to sell such boring clothing for such expensive prices!
My recommendation is to bypass the clothes section and head to the food section. The quality there is much higher. Another reviewer mentioned the famous M&S gummies, especially Percy Pigs. I have another suggestion - get the Triple Chocolate cereal. It comes with both dark and white chocolate flakes, as well as these small chocolate cubes that are delectable. If you aren't watching your calories, get this for maximum breakfast pleasure. Every mouthful will be full of chocolate, yet not excessively.
