Astons Specialities must be one of my favourite restaurant to visit when I crave for steak. Astons is the only place which sells juicy and succulent steak at pocket-friendly prices. For just $12.90, you can get a huge serving of Prime Sirloin (my favourite!) alongside two side dishes. There is quite a variety of side dishes to choose from, my favourite being the fries, butter rice and garden veggie. The fries has some additional spice on it which makes it very special and tasty! They also sell rib-eye steak and wagyu steak, but they are a bit more on the pricey side.
For those who do not like beef, they also have other mains like chicken and fish! My favourite chicken would be the chargrilled chicken and black pepper chicken. The black pepper is a bit spicy, so those who cannot take hot food might prefer the mushroom chargrilled instead. If you are not very hungry, a grilled fish with herbs will suffice! Fishes and chicken dishes cost less than $10.
You might also want to order a mushroom soup with garlic breads on the side as an appetizer and a basket of nuggets to share as well!
Astons is a very popular neighbourhood restaurant, known for their good food and cheap and affordable price, so a long queue during dinner time is to be expected, especially on weekends. Waiting time for the food also ranges from 20minutes to sometimes even 40minutes, depending on the outlet and crowd. However, for the amount of money you are spending, I believe you have nothing to complain about. So long as you are with the right company, the waiting time should not matter too much! Also, you just have to be a little more street-smart and visit the place during its low-peak hours. You are sure to enjoy every moment and bite!
I first heard of Astons 3 years ago, when my friend raved about the food and its cheap prices to me. And after trying it, I completely understand her love for Astons and why she patronize it so often!
Prices of the chicken and fish range from around $6 - $7. And the best part is that this includes two side dishes, of which you can choose from a variety of side dishes, such as fries, onion rings and garden veggies for the vegetable lovers. For the chicken, you can choose different sauces to go along with them. I particularly liked the chargrilled chicken, that is topped off with mushroom sauce. It is not too salty, the chicken is grilled to almost perfection and the portion is quite big. One will definitely walk out of Astons feeling full and satisfied! I will recommend patrons to have mushroom soup and garlic bread too. The garlic bread is often toasted to golden brown and it tastes as crunchy as it looks. Dip it into mushroom soup and you will have the perfect starter to your meal! Furthermore, Astons sell drinks which are not commonly found everywhere. One example is the IBC rootbeer and Perrier.
Thus, when you and your friends do not have any idea where to go for your meals, Astons would be an excellent choice! Pocket friendly and yummy food, it will definitely have you going back more than once! I would recommend steak to the meat lovers as the steak is relatively good for its price!
Aston’s is probably most well known for being located in regular hawker centres, but having a spanking header and logo that makes it stand out from the other stalls as a more professional and higher class stall. However, it is simply a western food stall just like any other that you can find in hawker centres, in my opinion.
I had pasta from Aston’s once and swore off it for the rest of my days. It was plain terrible! Dry, hard and barely even cooked, I really do not know what kind of chef they had in there to cook that sort of pasta. This was the Sembawang Shopping Centre branch. I hope they have removed that chef or at least trained him up a bit more before letting unassuming customers stroll in and waste their money like that. I could not even take more than two bites before I was done eating.
The chicken however, is another story altogether. The meat is tender and the gravy is full of flavour. I really regret ordering the pasta as the chicken chops were on another level. However, I would expect a western cuisine restaurant to be at least good at all the basic types of western cuisine, especially a simple dish like pasta. Definitely disappointing, hope they have improved since that time.
Astons is a very well known restaurant all over Singapore - and I can fully understand why. They even have outlets in coffeeshops in the heartlands, simply because they are that widely popular.
Astons Specialities (East Coast) is located along Tanjong Katong, and I have to stress that driving here will be more of a hassle because traffic is bad and it's difficult to find a parking lot here. It would be more advisable to take a bus here.
I've always liked Astons for the quality of their food - they make it a point to serve affordable, delicious food, and there is not one dish that I really dislike. However, do note that on busy days or peak periods, you may have to wait for up to an hour or two just to get a seat, and service during such periods will inevitably be below standard. After placing your order, you may also have to experience a long wait before the food comes.
When it does, though, it's definitely worth all that inconvenience - which explains why Astons remains one of my recommended places whenever friends from other countries visit Singapore and want a taste of our western food here.

Astons has got to be one of the best and affordable western grill restaurants around. It definitely ranks as one of my family’s favorite dinner places.
Personally, I prefer their chicken chop to beef steaks. Grilled and seasoned to perfection, the chicken slab remains juicy and tender with a slight crisp on the skin. And the best part of this is that you get to choose 2 side dishes along with your main dish! My favorite side dishes are the potato salad and garden vegetables, just thinking about it makes my mouth water. Their fries are pretty good too.
Astons is a great value-for-money restaurant that you should visit for meals under $15.
Aston’s was always the first choice for my team of hungry canoeists after a long and intense training. The portions are decent, and the slabs of meat are perfect for bulking.
We all agreed that our favourite was the Char-grilled chicken dish. The chicken is so tender and juicy, but not too oily. Seasoned to perfection, it had the right amount of chicken and pepper flavour. The meal also comes with two sides of your choice. My all-time favourites are the Mac and Cheese, and potato salad. Their potato wedges are really tasty and good too, but a little too dry for me.
For under ten dollars, the whole meal is extremely affordable for students like us. It is really near the bus stop so convenience is never an issue. Eating at Aston’s is so worth it, it keeps us coming back for more each time.
Let's preface this review by acknowledging that you're not going to get world-class, or even above average steak for $15.90 - let's not kid ourselves over that. So for the steak you get at those kinds of prices here, expect a mediocre, or sometimes even below mediocre steak. Personally, I get my doneness here one degree below my desired doneness (i.e. I order Medium Rare for Medium) because the steak ALMOST always ends up overcooked. But hey, who's complaining?
So I won't complain about the steak here because it's honestly quite affordable (though vaguely overhyped) - but the real star of this restaurant lies in its other dishes, particularly their chicken.
At a mere $9.90 (nett, since GST is included and there's no service charge - another huge plus point), you can a chicken that smells just about as good as a steak, and a wide variety of flavours to choose from at that. For just $4 more, you get another chicken - more filling than a 200g steak and even cheaper. For that, the Double Up Chicken which grants you that exact option earns my highest recommendation.
Their side dishes are not to shabby as well - my personal favorites are their pasta salad (extremely fresh and cold) and their mac and cheese (heavy, cheesy, hot) which provide a great contrast next to each other. If you're up to more traditional things though, you could always go with a fries and salad pairing or even a fries and wedges pairing. The possibilities are endless.
All in all, definitely a solid cheap, value-for-money restaurant which students (and probably adults as well) adore. If you're looking for a good place to catch up or hang out with friends, this is it.
P.S. NOT for business dinners.
Ahhh Astons. Cosy dark wood interior, warm roast meals. This place is great for group outings with friends or even just simple meals with family.
I usually always order one of their Grillworks Chicken sets, which comes with two warm or cold sides of your choice. Their chicken is grilled just right, not too hard but still with a bit of crunch. I usually like to pair my chicken with some vegetables and potatoes. This combination has never failed me. As for drinks, they have a selection of soft drinks, tea, coffee as well as alcohol.
Overall, I really like this place. The staff are friendly too and the food arrives relatively quick. Definitely recommend dining here for a warm, fulfilling meal.
Never before have I experienced such value for money when having western cuisine! My favourite branch location is along Tanjong Katong, directly opposite 112 Katong.
Let's see, I've always liked their seaweed fries and frequently order their Chargrill Chicken. Their garden vegetables are so fresh as if they were just plucked out of a garden and washed before serving.
And yes the queue can be long at times, so I'd recommend either going earlier before peak hours or making sure you're not starving before you join the queue!
The best part is the price. Less than 10 bucks for a main course. That's absolutely value for money. Aston is one of the few restaurants that I will be visiting as long as I'm still alive.
Today I attended a workshop at Concourse and the vendor treats us to lunch at the Astons outlet across the street. As we are early, the place is quite empty with just 2 tables occupied.
At first 4 of us order Honey Bourbon Ribs ($24.50) as it is highly recommended by the vendor. But the order is soon sent back as there is only 2 servings of ribs available, so I have to change my order to something else.
Honey Bourbon Ribs ($24.50)
The serving is quite huge and comes with 2 choices of sides.
Lamb Loin Chops ($22.90)
The serving is also quite huge and comes with 2 choices of sides. X has order it middle, but it comes a bit rare some parts. We have asked if can send back to cook further but is told that it will take 20 minutes.
Wagyu Burger ($13.90)
Quite small in servings which XJ finishes it in a blink.
Vienna Sausage (4pcs)
XJ also order a serving of sausages which looks rather small.
Steak & Chicken ($21.90)
Since there is no more ribs, I have the steak and chicken which is ribeye and a choice of chicken, served with 2 choices of sides - onion rings and mac & cheese. The ribeye is cooked middle, and is quite fatty. In the centre of the meat, is just a huge lump of fat. Difficult to slice too. I have selected Teriyaki Chicken which the sauce is served separate from the chicken. The chicken is quite tender. The mac and cheese is not bad with rather soft pasta shells.
IBC Rootbeer ($3.00)
Wash the meal down with a bottle of rootbeer, which is quite cooling in a hot day.
When I look for places to eat at, my primary criteria for consideration is the bang for the buck, in other words, what I am getting for how much I'm paying. It may sound utilitarian, but I never believed in the need to spend excessively for good food. This may explain why I liked Astons when I first heard of it - savoury Western food for an affordable price sounds like a really attractive proposition.
There is a pretty good selection of flavours for the grilled chicken and fish. So far, I've tried most of the flavours for the grilled chicken and the Hickory BBQ remains my favourite simply because it is sweet, and I have a soft spot for sweet stuff.
Perhaps the best part about Astons is the fact we get to choose two side dishes for most sets. The sides are really good and surpassed my expectations. Most would expect sides to be just complementary to the main dish, but at Astons, you get the feeling that sides aren't merely afterthoughts. Personally, I like the potato salad, pasta salad, Mac and Cheese and the coleslaw.
On a whole, I found the experience pretty good despite slightly below average service standards and inconsistent portion sizes, quite simply because at that price, Astons is really hard to beat.
Astons is the best hawker western food I have ever tried, not to mention how full you get after an affordable meal. I love their Lemon Lime Chicken Chop; the Lemon Lime sauce is just refreshing, and the chicken chop is char grilled to perfection. I would usually have it with mashed potato and onion rings. Their portion of mashed potato is quite big and delicious. If you want to get something more filling, the crispy chicken will work, for some reason it is a larger portion than the regular chicken chop.
However, the prices of the menu generally increased by one to two dollars and the portions get a little smaller now, but it isn’t something that I cannot accept yet! Be prepared to wait if you are visiting!
Astons is a really nice place for meals. The restaurant's ambience is nice and cosy. The food is well cooked. Never too oily or too dry in my experiences at Astons. And the best thing is, the meals here are pocket friendly! They do not charge GST too!
I normally order black pepper chicken or fish, both are really juicy and would come with two side dishes. For the side dishes, I would order grilled vegetables, pasta salad, or mac and cheese. I would recommend the Mac and cheese if you're a fan of cheese! Astons always gives more than enough cheese on the macaroni, of course, that's to our gain. The pasta salad is really nice too, if they provide enough vegetables. Sometimes I'm just unlucky and get a whole pile of plain pasta, and that doesn't taste very good.
One tip for visiting Astons though, is to never visit during peak hours! I once queued for one and a half hour on Good Friday at the airport branch. Well.. Well, good things come to those who wait, and Astons' food is really worth the wait. Still, try to visit during non-peak hours. The food might take long but at least you'll get to skip the queuing bit!
I really recommend Astons if you're willing to wait for your food. Your wallet will thank you too for waiting!
I visited the CSM (City Square Mall) Aston's Specialties Outlet. The queue itself during dinner time just shows how frequented it is. The place is nearly always packed with people. I ordered a Crispy Fried Fish (comes with 2 side dishes of choice) with a baked potato and fries. The order took around 20min and the service was okay but didn't leave a lasting impression. The fish had a crispy batter and was not dry. It was perfectly fried and did not have a strong fishy smell.
The fries would be like those you see from McDonald's or KFC, however I liked the idea of them sprinkling seasoned powder over the fries to give it a unique taste. The baked potato was nothing very special. It was just wrapped in aluminium foil and placed in the oven, and then they placed margarine on the potato. The meal made me full and costed me and my mum (we ordered the exact same thing) a total of $22.60 (including the drinks). It did not have service or any GST charges.
If you are looking for somewhere to eat with friends after work for dinner, this would be a great place to go to. However, the queue would take up to 40min at times.
