For those who prefer a more tamed taste
I think one of the better points of Texas Chicken that really stand out is their not too greasy and seasoned chicken. Biting into the meat doesn't give you an instant burst of oil down your lips like you'd imagine which makes the process of eating (which I find also important instead of just the food quality) a lot less irking. It's still oily though, just not to the point where you just want to scrub out your mouth.
The meat is pretty tender and the skin isn't heavily seasoned. Those who prefer strong-flavoured chicken may want to choose an alternative instead of Texas Chicken. Its food isn't bland but has a more tamed taste, which I personally dislike but others appreciate. Many of my friends who don't like the lingering taste of really salty and spicy chicken like Texas Chicken as it doesn't leave their throats too dry after eating.
Love their Mexicana!
Possibly not the healthiest option on the list, ok, it is not even healthy at all, but it is a sinful indulgence when it comes to fried chicken. Texas Chicken is my favourite fast food chain to get my chicken burger. Crispy, tender, succulent and delicious! The burgers are not dry which is one of the reasons why I love their chicken burgers there, dry chicken fillet is probably one of the worse things that can happen in the kitchen.
I especially love their Mexicana Burger, which include some crispy nachos that aren’t found in other burgers. It is the most expensive burger on their menu, ala carte is about $6+. But, for me it is quite worth it. Their Texas Wrap, Classic Chicken and Tex Supreme are equally delicious! They have promotions going on quite frequently so it is quite a deal to have your meal there.
Not as oily as expected
I’m not a fan of deep-fried chicken, in fact I think the last time I ate KFC was a few years back, not counting Texas Chicken which I had last week after grudgingly agreeing to go with a friend.
I was pleasantly surprised because I had thought the chicken would be really greasy. However, it was not! Yes, there was still oil if you squeeze a piece of skin between your fingers, but at least the box which they put the chicken on was not as oily as KFC’s.
The prices were pretty decent too, and the portion was fair enough. Perfect for someone with limited pocket money and a small stomach for deep-fried chicken.
Delicious juicy meat.
This is definitely not a store for the health conscious. The chicken meat here is extremely juicy and full of oil which to me is just wonderful and tasty, but it might be a turn-off to the more healthy folks. For me the chicken was wonderful, from the first bite to the last. A fair warning however is to never EVER eat their chicken breasts. It is extremely dry. Always make tell them no breast when you are ordering or prepare to drink alot of coke or water.
The fries are the real problem for me. To sum in up simply.... They suck. Completely. The fries tasted good the first two times. After that, I just usually leave the fries alone. The fries are hard, not crunchy and have this weird slight cheese taste. It's not enough to make me boycott them but I avoid eating the fries whenever possible. Mostly I just give them to my nearby friend.
The real deal sealer is the scones or biscuits as the menu calls it. It tastes amazing. It is actually one of the only reasons I eat here (the other being the chicken). It balances the fries, and tastes really amazing. It's like sweet buttered bread, that is crunchy on the outside like a cookie, but soft on the inside. My issue here though, is the price. For $7.40 I expect alot more, and would like it if they allowed me to switch my fries for a scone. If you can look past that however, you are likely to enjoy it here.
The chicken is literally sweating oil...
When I was working part time at one of the office in United Square, there was this outlet near the entrance. And it was my first and last time I went there for a meal.
For health-conscious people, Texas Chicken is definitely a no-no. As I ordered a 2 piece chicken meal and ripped off the skin from the meat, what I could see is lots of oil out of the meat, my friend/colleague beside me just laughed and joked that the chicken is sweating.
Moreover, the taste did not really appeal to me, if you're a meat junky then you might like this. But personally, I really disliked the taste and after eating for some while, your mouth would be so dry that it would be hard to finish the whole chicken without finished a medium size drink. The cookie was pathetic in my opinion, what I didn't expect it to be good either way.
Texas Chicken? I think I will stick to KFC instead...
Colour of the chicken is a turn off...
In comparison to Popeyes, I would prefer the chicken from Texas Chicken a lot more. It is more succulent than that of Popeye's. However, the chicken lacks appeal. In complete contrast the the mouth watering chicken in their promotional images, what you get in reality are dull, bland looking pieces of chicken. But just remember that looks can always be, uh, deceiving.
The sets at Texas Chicken come with honey butter biscuits, mashed potato and a drink. The mashed potato, to me, loses to Popeye's, but is comparable to KFC's. Not too bad. The biscuits are a little dry and lack taste, considering that they are supposed to be honey butter.
Overall, the set meals are worth the money, and will definitely fill your tummy. If you are looking for a quick meal, Texas Chicken can certainly be a possibility for you.
To me, Texas Chicken did not really catch my eye or taste buds, in this case. I went to the branch in Causeway Point and it is always packed with a lot of people. When I first went there, I went for the student meal and the cashiers were not really friendly. I was not familiar with how to order the food there, and the cashier did not speak up. So, I did not get to choose my side dish, since I could not hear her and she just assumed I wanted fries.
When I had the burger, it was cheesy, to my surprise. Cheese and chicken do not go well, in my opinion. I had to take the cheese out, and the fries were not crispy at all. Though the chicken and mash potato are divine, the burgers are simply a fail.
Great competitor for popeyes and kfc
I dont really rate fast food highly in my food list due to the fact that it is unhealthy, and this is no exception honestly. However, not all fast food chains are the same, and I feel that Texas chicken seems to be a notch above KFC.
The chicken at KFC has too much flour in them, up to a point that you can actually see the flour at times, and this keeps me away from eating the skin. However at Texas, the chicken is juicy, succulent and it does not have the flour problem that KFC has. This is why I have to say that they are a notch above KFC, but not Popeyes.
I'd go KFC any day!
I have only had Texas chicken once in my life and honestly, I don't know what the big hype is about! Texas claims to have the "juiciest" chicken but when I ordered my 2 piece chicken meal, the chicken was so dry, I had to order another cup of soda just to chew it down! ( I don't even need to touch my soda when I'm eating at KFC) The order also took quite a while to arrive. The variety was very small, I hardly had anything to choose from. The chicken tasted quite blend. I remember telling my friend " I'd go KFC any day!"
The only food I enjoyed would be the little scone that came along with the chicken. That was delicious. Other than that, Texas Chicken would NOT be one of the restaurants I'd visit again.
Juicy, succulent chicken parts
If I had to pick my favourite fast food restaurant, I think it would be Texas Chicken. And I like it mainly because of its chicken parts. Bigger and more meaty than most fried chicken from other fast food restaurants, I think they are the tastiest and most value for money. If you are a spice lover, go for its crispy version of chicken. Your taste buds will be in for a treat. The fries at Texas are slightly different from the ones we usually see; they are ticker and chewier. The skin covering the potato seems a little thicker, making it quite a crispy treat.
There are always promotions going on at Texas and from the last I know they have ongoing lunch deals which are quite attractive. Besides its juicy chicken, also try its nuggets, onion rings and chicken strips. I'm not a fan of coleslaw as they always seem to be quite distasteful to me. But the ones at Texas are pretty fresh I do sometimes eat them instead of ignoring them completely.
Counter staff at the nex branch are always very polite, patient and helpful. I've not had a bad experience thus far. If you are thinking of eating there during peak hours though, I'd think you would be better off taking away the food as the place is usually quite packed during those times and you would find it quite hard to get an available table as its seating area is not big.
I wish people would start noticing this place more and try to accept fried chicken that is not the usual that they get from KFC. I would definitely choose this over KFC any day.
