In Singapore, the first Long John Silver’s restaurant was opened in 1983 in response to the growing consumer demand for quick service restaurants that was popularized by the introduction of McDonald’s Singapore in 1979. Long John Silver’s unique concept of serving up signature batter-dipped fish, chicken and shrimp cooked in 100% high-quality canola oil has not only secured the position as one of the key players in the local fast food arena but also has enjoyed great patronage by the young and vibrant generation aged 15-35. To date, we have 30 Long John Silver’s restaurants all over the island in major shopping complexes along the MRT networks at prime locations that enjoy excellent visibility.

dry, salty and unfilling
This is one fast-food restaurant that I dislike.
The fried food takes too long to be served. It is extremely dry and small in portion. I ordered the combo with one fish and one chicken. The taste was overly salty and halfway through the first fish slice, I did not feel like continuing with the meal anymore. The fish also left a tingling sensation on my tongue. The chicken, on the other hand, was made from chicken breast meat and it was tough and dry. The batter was salty as well. The fries saved the meal. It was crispy and flavorful. You can see and taste the blend of spices on the fries itself when compared to plain ol' fries served by Macdonalds and KFC. It's nice to have a change sometimes.
The drink was loaded with so much ice that I finished the drink itself in no time. It was not filling - which I think should be the most important aspect of fast food. It was dry and overly salty which made me order another cup of drink to quench the thirst and dryness. The drinks were not cheap as one reviewer below has mentioned. I have yet to try their grilled varieties but I doubt I would be going back there anytime soon as long as Macdonalds, KFC, Subway and Mos Burger are still around.
Best tasting batter
Long John Silver (LJS) was one of the fast food chains i often go to when i was still in secondary school. The branch was at Jurong East Entertainment Centre and the crispy seasoning is always the reason when i go back for me. You always need to order "more crumbs" to get more of the taste.
Their fries are different from other chains and the additional crispy texture makes it nice to chew on.Sometimes i will even order additional portion of the fries. Their calm chowder is also thick and flavourful with the seafood taste strongly cooked in the soup. There are also ingredients in the soup as well. The coleslaw is average and nothing special, i usually will not buy it unless i have a crave for vegetables.
For their main courses, i have tried some of their new variants and their occasional promotions of special variants, but the better ones are still the original fish and chicken. The fish itself is a big chunk of fish meat all enclosed in the batter, and the heat comes out from within when you bite into it. There is a slight fishy smell but not strong enough that it will turn people off. For the chicken, there is probably room for improvement as the meat is very dry most of the time.
Plate of Yellow
Gone were the days where we used to look forward to the dismissal of the school bells for our frequent clique outings to the nearest branch of long johns. The addictive battered fries, crunchy chicken platters and clam chowder always had us craving for more each time after we had ravaged the entire sinful plate of deep fried options. The occasional promotions would have us exceptionally delighted for the savings on the larger portions of servings. Those were the days where it was rare to find someone who disagreed and did not like Long Johns.
That was how the long johns I remembered used to be. The long johns today has come a long way from what it was when it was at its peak in the industry. The big servings that were very 'value for dollar' had exchanged for the smaller portions that probably only amounts to the size of a hand. The quality too, has been compromised on as it has become less crunchy and less tasty during the recent visit to long johns. Although they have more variety than what used to be a few core meals in the menu, I personally find that the food here has become less satisfactory and not as economical as compared to other food chains.
I still would however, go down to long johns for the clam chowder as none of the other clam chowders seem to be superior to the one they serve in terms of both price and taste.
Cheap and good fast food
Long John Silver's is commonly seen in many shopping centres and I suppose many have eaten something from there before. I find myself craving for Long John Silver's at times where I grew sick of fast food like Macdonald's or KFC.
Long John Silver's, also affectionately known as LJS, is famous for its fish and chips. Affordable combos are offered at pocket friendly prices like $4.50. One of my favourite combo is the one with 2 pieces of fried chicken and fries. I especially love the chips given along with the meals, they are so crunchy albeit oily! When one is at LJS, a must get would be the cheese that is sold at around 60cents. It goes well with everything, be it fried fish, fried chicken or the fries! The cheese dip is really much better than KFC's cheese dip, in my opinion. I haven't got to trying the grilled chicken combos though because they are more pricey. However, I would love to give them a try as I saw others eating that set before, and the portions look big and filling!
The service can be quite slow during lunch and dinner hours though. It would be great if they are more efficient in serving customers.
A sinful food because it's a total waste of money
Long John Silver was a teenage hood fast food restaurant for me. Often amazed by the cheerful service crew who answer thank you when you ring the bell to applause their good service. They used to serve hot crispy succulent fried chicken that is so tender to the teeth.
As for the present, Long John Silver has been a long time story.. If you want to understand tough love, try their fried chicken now. You can't possibly chew off a chunk without having a fight with the meat. Not to forget that plastic utensils always break during the tuss and tear.
I recalled one occasion when the waitress presented me my two piece fried chicken chips at the counter. I was stunt to see two miserable looking shrunken meat in front of me. I spent the whole lunch session wondering if Long John Silver had changed their usual chickens into kampong chickens..
They should consider shrinking the plate as well to create the illusion that the chicken is still in a rather big portion.
For a meal costing $4.50, you get two miserable smaller than palm size chicken fillets (don't count your fingers length), some fries and one regular drink.
For a meal of fish fillets or seafood set, be prepared to pay $7 and above.
I once had coupons at extremely cheap deals for the grilled sets as well. However, I ran to the next door western restaurant for a proper grilled pork chop at the price of $9.90.
Skip the grilled sets, and the prawns as well.. Those are flour and shrimps by the way.
Fish fillet is still the safe dish to order.
I love Long John Silver’s for their fries. However I feel that they are becoming increasingly stingy with the proportions. Sometimes when you order the 2 piece chicken meal, the pieces of chicken are so small they look like one of the fries. There was once when my friend ordered a meal, he could count the number of fries on it. There were only 13 fries. I feel like this is unacceptable because to be able to count the number of fries you are given is just ridiculous. I wish they would have higher standards regarding the proportions they give and not vary it whenever they are in a rush or cannot be bothered. However I cannot complain about the taste as the chicken is always juicy and sweet and the fries are very flavourful. If not for the chicken being so small I would eat at Long John Silver’s more often. The meals with seafood are also quite expensive and the fried shrimp are tiny.
All in all I feel that Long John Silver’s is more suitable for people who are not looking for a very filling meal but simply want to indulge in a bit of fast food.
Sinful yet delicious
Apart from McDonald's Long John Silver's would be the next sinful fast food joint I love. I never fail to order the two piece chicken meal with additional cheese (damage: $5.10) whenever I visit LJS. Yummy but very, very sinful. I shudder when I think about how much oil is used when frying the chicken/fries. I love the fries as well - they taste different from the one at McDonald's... Nicer, of course, but also more unhealthy I'm sure.
I usually frequent the outlet at Junction 8 which is almost always packed to the brim and hence, difficult to find a seat especially during lunch/dinner time. So I always make it a point to go slightly before dinner time to get a seat.
Service wise, the staff there have always been friendly and polite to me, and I like that Long John Silver's choose to hire older or less able workers who would otherwise be rejected by other eateries. One can see how much effort these workers put in and how glad they are to be given an opportunity to work a job that many of us might shy away from - for example, cleaning tables or clearing up after others.

Their Crazy Potatoes makes me go gaga!
All things carbohydrate are my kryptonite. Long John Silver’s Crazy Potatoes literally makes me feel like I’m going to spontaneoushly combust in giddy happiness.
If you’ve not heard about it, don’t be surprised, most people do not associate that with LJS! While their fried chicken and fish has a delightful and addictive batter, the Crazy Potatoes, to me, are the true stars of the show. Half of the dish comes in the form of sliced potatoes like chips, and the other half are crunchy fries. Atop the bed of potatoes are heavenly nacho cheese. If you’re like me and love cheese, order it with extra cheese!
Best of all, they are filling enough to have as a meal. So the next time you go to Long John Silver’s and cannot think of anything you want to eat, give these delightful potates a shot.
What I like best about Long John Silver is their batter, crispy and quite addictive. However, it can get quite salty after a while. Their fries are quite crispy as well. I find the price a little steep for its portion; the portion is considerably small. I seldom head to Long John Silver now, although the fish and chips there is not bad, crispy and nice albeit a little salty, I felt that it is too unhealthy, it seems that there’s too much MSG inside.
I know LJS is a fast food chain, but really, using the plastic fork and knife to eat the fried fish and chicken is quite a troublesome chore. I hope they will possibly get some tougher plastic cutlery at the very least, I always have to be very careful whenever I'm eating and yet breaking one or two in the process.
I've had my first Long John's Silver experience since Primary 1 (2006) and it was a pleasant and mouth-drooling one. Just 1 hour ago, I went to take-away from the City Square Mall outlet a 2pc fish meal ($7.20) and with an extra cheese dip ($0.50)...
Firstly is the Coke (REG), it has so much ice in it that when I reached home and bathed (1/2hr) and finished the drink in less than 3mins, there was half a cup of ice left. The drink also tasted somewhat diluted. Next, the famous Long John's Silver fries which when I was young I loved it. When I ate the fries today, it was dry, hard and cold which meant that it might be fried in large quantities and left for hours. The fish fillet was okay. It was slightly crispy but very oily. The cheese dip was probably the most pleasant tasting among the meal, however $0.50 for a small cup of cheese dip may be slightly overpriced for people looking for very economical meal. The service was stale and rather cold.
When I was younger and went to different outlets it had a 4-5star service where they had a smile and was able to suggest and communicate well. For this outlet I went to, the service was cold and the staff was probably just doing the job for the sake of the salary (no passion, initiative in introducing items. Just replying to anything you say.) At first I was amazed at the speed of how fast the food came out. Later which, when I ate (as stated above about the fries) then did I understand why.
For those people who are going to visit LJS for memories and the taste, I'd strongly suggest to not visit the CSM (City Square Mall) outlet. For those looking for value, shouldn't be visiting LJS to fill your stomachs.
Chicken is dry, but tasty none the less.
LJS is a great alternative in my opinion to Macdonalds or KFC. While I find their chicken to be dry, that is completely covered by the amazing taste of the skin. Some may complain that it tastes too salty but to me it's just fine. Sure there is room from improvement, but let's be honest. Their chicken isn't too bad.
The fries are even better. The taste of the fries is quite good. It's special and unlike that of Macdonalds or KFC, in the sense that it has no visible salt, but tastes even better. It is the only thing that still keeps me a loyal customer.
One other attractive feature, is the pricing. Whilst KFC overprices their Chicken, and Macdonald's gives alot less for the same price, LJS is quite fair. If you do not up-size and order a add on for everything, I find that for a lower price, the food here fills me a lot more than in other fast food restaurants.
Hopefully they wont be the next A&W
When LJS first came to S'pore I could still remember they had 1 of the best value set meal: 2 piece chicken with fries and drink for $2.90. Now that set has gone up to $4.50, still with the same 2 piece chicken, fries and drink.
When some reviewers commented that the chicken is dry, my humble opinion is that chicken breast meat tend to be that way. As a result I am fine when my chicken meat are slightly dry.
However the fries is an area LJS would need to improve. Not too long ago, about 6 mths back, LJS tried to experiment with new fries which are the long slender fries but without much potatoes and the taste is much to be desired. "Fortunately", they did not implement this new fries or i would just avoid this store.
as for the grilled items, if i have a wish and they are willing to listen; would they kindly use jasmine rice? The rice they have are just too dry and without taste. For the price I pay, i hope they can invest in better quality rice.
My used-to-be favorites
Long John Silver! It used to be one of my favorite fast food when I'm young. I love the deep-fried crispy chicken and the filet. However times have changed. The chicken tends to get so dry till I find it hard to swallow without a sip of Coke. In addition to that, the chicken and the filet has probably been deep fried till the overall taste becomes way too salty. Honestly, I find the taste unbearable. The service and ambiance wise is still alright. In overall, its the way-too-salty, dry chicken and filet which force me to say No! No! to Long John Silver again. Feel free to like my review if you somehow agree with what I have said. Thanks!
Delicious, but chicken meat tend to be quite dry at times.
Long John Silver's Singapore is one of my favorite fast food restaurants! (Yeah, I rang their bell once!)
I love the fact how they would have frequent promotions every now and then, and I would get the chance to try out some menu items at a discounted price.
Some of my personal favorites include Clam Chowder soup and Fish combo. However, the prices for their fish combo meals are quite expensive, and I would end up opting for the chicken combo meal instead.
As much as I love the food, I realized that almost all their fried items taste similar. (For eg: the outter fried "skin" of the fish and chicken) I believe that is the unique side of LJS?
I do find that the chicken meat tend to be quite dry at times too. I had no idea whether there was any added MSG to it as I remembered going crazy with thirst after a LJS meal once. Fortunately, this doesn't always happen after all my LJS meals! Hence, I shall give it the benefit of doubt.
Do give their unique fries a try - Its crispy and will have you craving for more. (Oh, don't forget the chilli dip!)
As there are limited Halal food places in Singapore and my boy is Muslim, we usually turn to fast food when we are short on cash. Long John Silver’s is a fast food joint which is readily available in most parts of Singapore, so we eat there quite often.
Starting with the food, and with reference to the chicken, I will say that I personally feel that their food is rather dry and the crisp is overly hard. Not an option on the menu I would pick. My usual pick would be the Chicken Salad, costing about a little more than three dollars. Like I said, the chicken is a little hard and dry. However, the serving of the salad is quite generous. The clam chowder soup’s quality however, is not very consistent. I have tasted a thick and creamy serving from the branch at Sommerset 313, but the one I got from Bishan Junction 8 was cold, diluted and had less than 5 clams in it.
I was also very disappointed in the service provided at the Bishan Junction 8 branch. The staff serving me was rude and was shouting to her colleague while taking my order. When I asked for a change in drinks, she got annoyed and started throwing her weight about. This happened more than once.
Overall, I think if you have a choice, you might want to reconsider before dining at Long John Silver’s. Especially the Bishan Junction 8 branch.
Good enough to ring the bell!
Having tried most of the combos of fried chicken/fish and fries at Long John Silvers, I decided to try the chicken/potato salad that costs about $3.30 for a more vegetable-based alternative.
Initially the serving looked a bit too small, with some potatoes, chicken slices and loads of celery, lettuce and cucumber. But once I was halfway chomping down the potatoes and lettuce, I could feel my stomach feeling fast! I had it with tartar and chili sauce for that extra flavor too. Miraculously, I was also able to find 2 single pieces of pineapple, which really made me disappointed- more pineapples could have been served as it would enhance the refreshing taste! The chicken slices were just fine so the overall salad was not that bad.
However, the price of the drinks was quite ridiculous to me. when I decided to buy an ala carte small ice lemon tea, they instantly made $2.10 out of me- which I thought was not worth it- definitely could get a better amount for a lower price outside! Hence I would recommend you to bring your own bottle of water or bottled ice lemon tea if you will, to save that wallet from unnecessary and unjustified spending.
As for the service side, the cashier was quick on the ball, friendly and gave me suggestions on what to eat and was patient in letting me consider- also because there was barely a queue behind me. The lady who also brought me my delayed order also said" Sorry for the wait. Please enjoy your meal". So at least there was some courtesy in the house.
In the end, I left the outlet, ringing the Long John Silver's bell after all!
Crunchy and tasty
Long John Silver provides good service and food quality is not bad either. The fried battered chicken and fish taste good, well seasoned and does not feel greasy. Crunchy crumbs, juicy and tender meat really attract me. The fries is crispy and moist. The meal is really filling and the cheese sauce is a must have.
The grilled and charbroiled dishes aren't my favourite as I find it dry and have less texture. Fried breaded shrimps is better than fried battered shrimps as battered shrimps is dry. The clam chowder is thick and tasty, I think it is Campbelle soup as they have the same taste and texture. The sides are good too. Potato salad are in chunks and not overcooked, mixed with mayonaise that can fill my stomach just by having it. I like the rice as well, moist and well seasoned. LJS will always be my favourite fast food.
