crisp & crunch
Colours of the British flags greets me as I approach Chippy's. Very well designed for a takeaway counter, I must say, it really does have the western feel. I have heard very good feedback about it & being a fried-food lover it was a must-try! I have tried the fried fish, popcorn chicken, flavoured fries. It really does has the crisp & crunch that I'm looking for! but it feels a little too oily for my liking. yes, i know i sound a little demanding since fried food is meant to be oily but it after 1/3 of my snack it gets too "gelat" (or heaty) for me. but overall it was great! and my next target will be trying the all-praises MARS BARSSSSS!
Forget the diet!
Whenever I'm strolling around Plaza Singapura or Raffles City I usually get something from Chippy and most of the time I aim for the Sausage with Mashed Potato and Mars bars with vanilla ice cream..
Last time, I will usually order the Beer-battered fish but sometimes their fish got smell and the coating is very thick. To be safe and be satisfied, I just avoid ordering that.
Not entirely impressed.
Having spent a good part of my childhood living in England, I have to say that I was thoroughly disappointed in Chippy. I had heard wonderful reviews and when my friend asked "Do you know that they sell fried mars balls?" I literally jumped out of my chair and exclaimed that we had to get to the nearest Chippy shop straight away.
In England, Mars Bars are coated in a thin layer of batter and deep fried until crisp. The result is a lovely crispy coating with the chocolate and caramel of the mars bars oozing out the minute you bite into it. But the fried mars balls from Chippy had so much batter I could barely taste the Mars Bar and the batter didn't even taste nice. Furthermore, the icecream that was served was not at all impressive. I could tell it was just regular cheap chocolate icecream and lacked natural flavorings.
I am thoroughly disappointed.
FRIED MARS BAR!!
Two favourite favourite snacks from here; the fish & chips and fried mars bars! Gosh speaking of this, I am having craving for it now.
The beer battered fish & chip smells really good, with a tinge of saltiness and vinegar, the fish is fried crispy and the fish meat is fresh! Yum. Other than that, I love the fried mars bars... it’s soooo creative to fry mars bars. Usually, our mars bars are just chocolate and caramel right? Imagine it’s being fried, and not just that.. it’s top up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream! I swear it’s really that good!!! You guys got to try it!
Prices are reasonable $3-$5 for each item, of course it’s totally worth it with the awesome good snack! (of course, it’s sinful.. you may have to go run for another 5 km to get rid of those fats you have just taken in :P)
Sinfully mine, sometimes
This is a place when it is convenient to be sinful. Located all around the intense and stressful city areas and some heartland malls, chippy is an invasion that delivers happiness to the belly and sadness when it bloats up.
I first started to eat chippy's as I am a fan of mash potato and just simply love carbohydrates. Being skinny gave me a licence to binge eat on food like this and not really care about the consequences. I ordered a mash potato with a hot dog on a stick with black pepper sauce. It was good, not delicious but something to make me feel slightly happy.
I have also tried their beer fried fries too and it is truly on par with beer chips, except that it is fries instead of chips. the taste is excellent and for people who don't mind beer it is a sinful indulgence.
My favourite outlet has got to be the Rafflescity outlet. Kind and quick staff ensure that the food is delivered promptly for your consumption and it is a corner I try to avoid in order to stop this sinful habit.
interesting fried mars bars with vanilla icecream
Food at Chippy makes a good snack or dessert.
The beer battered fish is worth a try as the taste of the batter is nice, although it is very oily. It does come with some complimentary sauces, including chili, mayonnaise and vinegar, but the premium sauces like cheese are available with additional charges. I will usually get the vinegar sauce, but the fish is also nice eaten on its own. The batter is crispy and the fish is soft. In each takeaway bag, there are quite a lot of fish pieces. The mashed potato with sausage is worth a try as well.
I like the fried mars bars that also comes with vanilla icecream. The batter of the fried mars bars is crispy and the mars bar itself is soft and chewy. It tastes great when eaten together with the icecream, a combination of cold and warm sweetness.
As they are deep fried, these snacks can be rather filing. There is usually a queue at Chippy, and it is worth the short wait as the food is affordable.
fried mars bars. do not try the bangers & mash
The only thing that I like from here is the fried mars bars. Not commonly seen outside, it is one of the few places where you can get your fried mars bars fix. The sweet sinful round balls is definitely an indulgence that's good to have once in a while. It comes with a cold scoop of ice-cream as well. It will melt all over the fried mars bars. Very nice and indulging. However, I would advise you to share it with your friends and having the full serving to yourself (yes, I know I know. it's nice..) might be too overwhelming and might invite a protesting throat the next day! My friends are fans of the spicy curry chicken. As I don't really fancy spicy food, I can't comment much on that. But the reviews below seem to be fairly positive about that dish!
Do not order the bangers & mash. The mash is made from instant mashed potatoes from the Maggi machine. If you are not sure what that is, it is the instant mashed potato machine commonly found in our 7-11 stores. For that price, I would have expected freshly made mashed potatoes! If they are serving Maggi potatoes, I might as well pay $1 at the 7-11 store? The sausage ain't that great as well. Save your money on this!
Best snacks ever.
For people who love western food and love snacks, Chippy's is the place for you. Personally, it is one of my all time favourite food stalls and I am secretly hoping that they would franchise it to the shopping mall near my house! The aroma of their food can often fill the air and the pictures of the food displayed on top of the counter make it hard for people to resist stopping at their stall to ponder over which snack to get.
There are often long queues at Chippy's and I can understand why. I have tried almost all the food items on their menu and I love everything! From the fried mars bars to beer battered fish to cheesy curry chicken to mashed potato and sausage, I simply cannot decide which is the best snack! I would recommend beer battered fish, and do choose the vinegar option when asked to choose the toppings of either vinegar or ketchup. It is salty but delightful. Cheesy curry chicken would be a good choice for people who love spicy food. As I cannot take too much spicy food, I found it a tad too thrilling to eat a whole pack of cheesy curry chicken on my own. I would take the non-spicy chicken option to save myself from the agony.
The waiting time for the food is quite short, ranging from 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the length of the queues. However, I find the snacks quite expensive, as they recently increased the price of the snacks. Some cost around $4- $5. But to satisfy your fried food cravings, why not? At least the snacks are nice so it would definitely not be a waste of money!

great but unhealthy
The first thing I think off when someone mentions “Chippy’s” would have to be their fried mars bars and chocolate ice cream. As if Mars isn’t fattening already, Chippy British Takeway decided to make it worse by deep frying it. Of course something this high in calories have to taste good, right? If you’re in for something different but still chocolatey, you have got to try this dish at least once in your life.
Warm, gooey chocolate oozes out of the fried bar when you cut into it. Accompanied with a scoop of chocolate ice cream, the texture and temperature play in your mouth will have you wanting more. Of course that isn’t the only nice thing on the menu, they are pretty famous for their spicy curry chicken and beer battered fish and chips. I am personally not a fan of fried food, but Chippy serves pretty decent fried food.
I wouldn’t go back to Chippy’s because the food they serve are extremely unhealthy and fattening.
The most delicious things on earth are unhealthy
I suppose, that the British do need a big batch of fried yums to keep them warm in their chilly weather. Otherwise, there can be no possible explanation as to why they would fry literally everything, including a candy bar.
I for one, am a big fan of the curry chicken nibbles that come with nacho cheese that you can drench over the entire crunchy battered chicken. But still I have no real understanding as to WHY they have to fry mars bars!
My siblings enjoy the brautwurst that comes fried (again!) on a stick and laid to rest on a bed of soft, velvety mash potatoes. The juicy wiener does pair marvelously with the semi-sweet mash. But they too, have no understanding as to why one would enjoy deep-fried mars bars served with chocolate ice cream.
Everything is fried, everything, and as you watch your snack/dinner/lunch get swallowed by the black black oil of the deep fryer, you find yourself faced with a question, "who came up wiht the concept of fried mars bars and ice cream..?"
I hope you read that in a posh British accent because that's the right thing to do. And in case you didn't know, it sells deep-fried mars bars with ice cream.
Fried Mars Balls are to die for!
I first came across Chippy's a few years ago when an article about their signature fried mars balls were published in the papers. It definitely exceeded my expectations and was unlike anything else I'd tasted before. The fried mars balls are still piping hot when you get them, which contrasts perfectly with the accompanying ice cream!
The batter is thin and crisp, and upon biting into it, the melted mars bars ooze out, warm and full of chocolate-caramel flavour - I feel like I'm in chocolate heaven every time! Worth every single cent, eating a portion is an amazing experience unto itself (:
The rest of the snacks there are decent, but nothing to rave about, especially in comparison to the fried mars balls. Do give those a try, you won't regret it!
Thumbs up for affordable bites
I first tried Chippy only a few months back and has since then been hooked. A little on the pricey end but I cannot over-emphasize on how good their food is! I'm a loyal customer for their curry fried chicken (like popcorn chicken *salivates*) as well as sausage with mashed potatoes.
Their sausages are a tad too salty but I like the crunch of it with every bite. Sausages packed with a crunchy exterior are TO-DIE-FOR. The curry fried chicken is also adequately flavored. Love it!
Have yet to try out the fried mars balls that's served with vanilla ice cream; have seen a lot of crazy reviews on the sinful indulgence. A great way though, to keep one sane on a hot and weary day.
Portions are enough to fill my tummy (my appetite isn't big) so I feel it's still reasonable. Always my place to go for finger-licking good bites!
Insanely delicious Fried Mars Bars but it takes them really long to serve
The best part of Chippy's has got to be the Fried Mars Bars! As it's name suggests, it's basically just cut up Mar's Bar, dipped in flour and deep fried. It's served with either vanilla or chocolate ice cream.
It taste's so good! The bars are drizzled with chocolate sauce and it tastes incredible. The ice cream does an incredible job in complimenting the fried bars, ensuring that it doesn't get too dry, it also ties the entire dish together, adding the 'cold' element.
The waiting time for this, however, can be far too long. You have to place an order and then get a receipt with your number on it and wait for approximately 10 minutes before you get anything. It can be pretty frustrating considering how it's only a snack. The waiting time is possibly the only thing that keeps me from getting anything every time I'm there.
Not worth the queue
It was a disappointment in terms of value. In the past when i ordered the fried chicken, there used to be a free cheese dip given for every purchase. Now we have to top up 50 cents to get the cheese sauce.
The beer-battered fish may seemed worth it because of its huge serving size (I think it can constitute to a meal of fish and chips with fries) instead of just a snack. But I found the fries rather tough and the fish lacking in flavour. So get this if you want to feel full and yet not wanting to splurge on a fish and chips meal at a restaurant.
fattening but always coming back for more.
It is fattening, deep fried, full of oil and just downright sinful. Yet, people still patronize Chippy knowing how unhealthy it is. Reason being, it is filling for a takeaway and a snack.
I have tried Deep fried Mars Bars and curry chicken. My favourite would be Curry Chicken with cheese dip. They are exact compliments to each other and make the whole bag feel like a small meal enough to fill my stomach during lunch breaks, working at Topshop then. The crispy chicken, the curry powder and the cheese dip makes it such a great comfort food or a snack to take away despite the increase in price and fattiness.
Great comfort food!!
I have tried every single item on Chippy's menu, and what keeps me going back for more is the Beer Battered Fish! I like how they douse the fish and chips with vinegar generously, the way authentic fish and chips is supposed to be! However, some people might not like the fish and chips with vinegar so remember to tell them to exclude the vinegar if you are not a fan.
Another hit from their menu is the cheesy curry chicken. Not too spicy and not too salty, they always do it perfectly. The flavorful chicken goes extremely well with the slightly tangy cheese sauce.
However, I am not too fond of the fried mars bars because it's just too sweet for me... And fried chocolate is not very appealing to me.
best comfort food
I have honestly tried everything at Chippy's. Up till this day it is still one of the best street food kiosk in town, one that I'll never fail to return to when I need to indulge in comfort food.
Despite the hike in prices with the new renovations, food at Chippy's remains really value for money. Let's start with its most iconic dish - Fried Mars Bars with Ice Cream. It is a really innovative idea to deep fry chocolate, and it is an idea that has worked really well. The caramel in the chocolate blends in really well with the crispy batter, and this hot little nugget combined with with the ice cold of the ice cream = heaven. Besides, their Cheesy Curry Chicken also offers a unique combination of spice and cheese. Imagine KFC Chicken with Cheese Fries in one mouthful. Beer Battered Fish offers fish fillets deep fried to perfection, with fluffy flesh inside coated with crispy batter. The Cheesy Sausage with Mashed Potato is also highly recommended but not as value for money. My only complaint is the Calamari Rings, which are a little hard and doesn't offer the chewy texture of calamaris.
A cheap, value-for-money, heavenly stall of comfort food waiting to be devoured. Just leave your dieting plans to tomorrow, you won't regret it.
Tasty but unhealthy
I got to know about Chippy British take away when my friend introduced me its fried mars bars with ice cream. I thought the combination was weird but tried it anyway. It was my one and only time. It's too sweet and rich for my liking. Lets not even mention how sinful and unhealthy that combination is.
While I stayed away from its famous fried mars bars, I did give its other food a try. Their beer battered fish and chips is very good. It's value for money, its fish pieces are thick and tender and its chips are fried to a good crisp. The only gripe I have about it is that it is a little greasy.
If you don't like food that is too oily you can try its bangers and mash which is a sausage with mash potato. This is not too sinful but can be a little bit salty so be sure to have some water to drink!
During lunch and dinner time, Chippy's can have quite a long queue and you might also have to wait quite a bit for your food to be ready so it would be wise not to buy their food during peak hours.
