mediocre thai food

Thai Express is the last place I would think of whenever I think of Thai cuisine. The atmosphere is nowhere near Thai style. It is just painted with orange paint with a few attempts of trying to meld an elephant silhouette into the whole Thai culture decor. The tables and chairs are also your usual ones. No special effort made to enhance the Thai atmosphere in the restaurant.

I always order the beef soup noodles when I am there because I cannot take spicy food. The beef noodles was so-so only. The soup was a tad bland and thin and the noodles and beef were too overcooked. I did not like it but I still managed to finish it. At $10+ for a bowl, the beef was way too little! I have heard good things about the tom yam there but unfortunately I can't say it for myself because I have not tasted it before. The soft shell crab is alright though, just that it was a little too oily, if not it would have been perfect. Service standards fluctuates from outlet to outlet. The outlet at Holland Village is below average but the outlet at Tiong Bahru was great, so it really depends. For a quick thai meal fix, Thai Express would be great but if you are looking for authentic Thai cuisine, I would advise you to give this place a skip.

Beware the Spice

Thai Express has relatively cheap food for a restaurant. And the food is very very satisfying. However, be wary as they mean it when the food is labeled as “spicy”. I always go for something with Tom Yam included, such as the Tom Yam Glass Noodles or Tom Yam with CrayFish. The taste is just superb but very very spicy and not for people who only take moderate spiciness. Once my friend ordered the Rice with yellow ginger chicken (labeled with 4 chillis), we had to wash the chicken in water before it could be eaten as it was spicy to the extreme. But according to my friend, it tasted good.

Another favourite of mine is the sambal kang kong. This is always served in a large proportion, enough to share between two people and the taste is satisfying. However, the strange thing is they always serve the kang kong first before the mains get to us so by the time we receive our mains, we would have almost finished all the kang kong already instead of having it as part of the meal as a whole.

The pina colada is also something I always order because I feel that it helps me deal with the spiciness, and the plus point is it comes with a scoop of ice cream on top! Nothing better to pair with a meal of such fiery character.

Average but value for money

Personally I'm a fan of Thai food and Thai Express is one of the more prominent Thai restaurants in Singapore. One thing to note, though, is that the Thai food here isn't as authentic as the ones you find in Golden Mile, but at least it's a lot more convenient to find a Thai Express outlet as compared to making a troublesome trip down to Golden Mile to enjoy authentic Thai food.

I have to admit that service wise, I've never been let down everytime I visit a Thai Express outlet. The staffs at Thai Express are always polite and never fail to provide prompt service, which definitely makes every visit a pleasant one.

My favourite dishes would be the Green Curry Softshell Crab Rice and the Pineapple Rice. Two very simple dishes, but very mouth watering ones. Most of all, they aren't too expensive, and that's what I like about Thai Express.

If you're a fan of spicy food, do remember to try their clear Tom Yum Soup. Just one spoon of it was enough to kill me. It tasted good and authentic, but it was too spicy for me. Still, if you're someone who can take spicy food well, then it's definitely worth a try!

Their Prawn Toast is a must-try.

With its use of spices, Thai food is extremely versatile and can bring one on an exotic taste journey. I love it! Whenever I’m craving Thai cuisine, Thai Express usually saves the day. While not completely authentic, they have retained the essence of what makes Thai food so good.

One underrated item from their menu would be the Kanom Pang Na Kung (Prawn Toast). Do not be deceived by its simple appearance, one bite into it and your taste buds will be sent on a field trip. Stuffed with a juicy and bouncy prawn paste, it’s then fried to crispy perfection. Their Phat Thai is not bad too, though it has a sweeter taste than usual. Mix it with the chili flakes and peanuts and you’ll get a dish that packs a flavour punch!

Though its prices are higher than some other Thai restaurants around, the food is comparable, if not better. Besides, Thai cuisine in Singapore is seldom cheap. Sigh.

Not the best but good enough for a quick fix

I used to frequent Thai Express to get my quick fix of Thai food. They have a variety of items on their menu. At S$8.90 per set, their lunch time promotion is worth the money. It consists of a side dish, a main dish as well as a dessert. Prices are exclusive of charges and taxes.
Their promotion is available at all outlets except at Paragon, Raffles City and Vivocity.

If you are looking for something spicy, try their rice with yellow ginger chicken. After one mouth, you will be probably requesting for cup after cup of water. Their Tom Yum Soup is also another on the menu to try. It is not the best however; the spicy yet sour will leave you asking for more.

As for dessert, the popular mango sticky rice – sweet glutinous rice with fresh mango and coconut milk will be a good choice. Their cendol is worth a try if you are looking to try something else. Aside from those on promotion, prices of the other items on their menu are considered pricey. For a convenient Thai fix, Thai Express is good enough!

Just okay

It was the first time trying Thai Express for me and my group of friends. We ordered a tom yum soup and a few other dishes and rice. I would consider their dishes good, but there are many cheaper and better thai food around. Also, I felt that their portions were too small especially if you are very hungry, like we were after ice skating at JCube.

It was also very disappointing that they do not provide free plain water, or at least 30 cents or 50 cents in a cup. It's either we spend $2 on a bottle of mineral water with a Thai Express label on it or much more on something more worth it.

Overall, it was still good and I didn't regret trying but I wouldn't go back there unless my friends drag me in again.

Not your 1st choice for Thai food

My friends and I decided to give Thai Express a try because all the other eateries in the vicinity were full. The food was average at most, but I guess you get what you pay for.

I ordered the Green Curry Chicken while my friend ordered the Soft Shell Crab Curry with Rice. The Green Curry was nothing special, in fact it was a tad too spicy (which shouldn't be the case for Green Curry) and the milk taste was too strong. My taste buds were bombarded by the overwhelming taste. On the other hand, my friend's Soft Shell Crab curry was nice! Definitely going to try that out if I ever visit the place again.

One bad thing is that the place doesn't serve water free of charge though, the food was too spicy and I had no choice but to buy their drinks, which were extremely overpriced. Overall, not my best Thai food experience. I can easily find other places with cheaper and yummier Thai food.

Thai Fast Food

Yes that was what it seemed like to me. The express location for Thai dining.

It might just be that day because most of our food served was cold. Like they prepped it beforehand and served it whenever someone orders. My Pad Thai was kind of hardened after being exposed to the environment and rather sticky. When I stuck my fork in it and lifted it, it came up as a whole clump. Now you can imagine.

It tasted rather okay. If not for the fact that it's cold, I might've even rated it good. My Avocado drink which I was so excited to order was also really watery and I'm actually paying about $7+ for it. Meh. ):

I might visit again.. if I can muster up enough courage, Though Siam Kitchen and Rama Thai would beat it hands down, anytime.

Pad Thai!

My first time at Thai Express was when my friend and I felt so sick after having a heavy meal and we went in hoping the thai food would help to rid us of that feeling, which it did! We felt so much better and energized after the meal. We ordered Pad Thai and it is just so good. Appetizing and flavourful at the same time, possibly the best I ever had, it just made us feel so good afterwards.

The ambiance there was pretty good, cosy and a good place to relax all your muscles while waiting to dine.
The price is quite acceptable and I would return again for the Pad Thai!

Tears of joy and pain

Caution to all future patrons seeking a hearty Thai meal at Thai Express, when the menu or the well-meaning waitress tells you a particular dish is 'spicy', it's an understatement. You might just end up needing three jugs of lime water just to stop you from tearing up from the monstrosity of that soul-shattering, sinus-clearing and tear-inducing spiciness.

I went to the Thai Express at Kallang Leisure Park a few months ago with my family, and the service there was quite commendable. We were greeted enthusiastically at the entrance by the man manning the cashier and was ushered to a table. The waitress patiently waited to take our order as we hemmed and hawed over what to eat and was even jovial enough to banter with my father who was making some astonishingly bad jokes about the restaurant's specialty drink. (Sorry dad!)

The food was of good quality and was very appetising, though for those who tend not to have that big of an appetite, I would not recommend getting the noodle dishes as the portions are rather big and can be very filling. The deal-breaker, however, would be the tom yam soup which had such an spicy sting to it that I could feel my clogged up sinuses clear up as fast as day. If I may be so boastful, I feel that as a true-blue Singaporean, my tolerant levels of spiciness could be deemed as commendable by most. However, during that fateful meal, I was left totally defeated after the first five mouthfuls of the Thai Express tom yam soup. I could literally feel my eyes tearing up from the spiciness, yet I couldn't stop spooning more of the aromatic broth into my mouth. It was almost like a abusive relationship!

Overall, I enjoyed my experience eating at Thai Express, the interior ambience and decor was very cozy, the food portion and quality is also very good. If you are so brave enough, do try the tom yam soup as an add-on to your meal, I promise it will make you cry tears of unadulterated blood and joy at the same time.

Great tasting food

Thai express serves a variety of Thai dishes and I frequent eating here as the food tastes uniquely southeast Asian. Though I find that the service and ambience of the CityLink outlet can be improved, take nothing away from the quality of food served.

The Thai Green curry tastes great and is very rich in flavour. It has the right amount of spices in it to create an explosion of flavours in every mouthful. The Tom Yum Clear soup provides a unique taste and I was blown away by the soup as it was spicy but at the same time, not too spicy.

However, The drinks here are expensive and this is the only flaw that I can point out, given the good quality of food being served.

Decent Thai food with reasonable prices

If you're a fan of spicy thai food, you have to try the yellow ginger chicken rice! It's insanely spicy and the dish's name on the menu has about 4 'chillies' next to it! That's 4 too many! It has pretty much become a challenge for me and my family of spicy eaters, to see who can tolerate the dish the best. Not that it tastes bad, because trust me, it's really good, but because it's that spicy.

After finishing the plate of yellow ginger chicken rice, it feels great to down it with a plate of sweet mango with sticky rice. It's quite rare to find mangoes that are actually sweet in Singapore, but Thai Express always seems to have an endless supply of sweet juicy mangoes, although that can be quite worrying... but it tastes good, so, so be it right?

The prices are pretty reasonable and they don't seem to challenge the quality of the food and they're pretty reasonable for what you get. The portion sizes are quite big too.

The branch at Jurong Point also has a good ambience even though its located right smack in the middle of the mall. It's not too cramped, although i do think that they could make an effort to make the restaurant a little more "Thai" which i think would add to the atmosphere of the restaurant.

Best thai tom yam

Thai Express’ tom yam glass noodles is a must try for tom yam lovers! Don’t be fooled by the clear, translucent appearance of the tom yam, it is actually pretty spicy!

Some other food they serve are also pretty spicy, so do pay heed to the menu when they label a dish with two chilis and above! There was once I thought too highly of my ability to eat anything spicy and ordered a basil chicken with rice (or something like that) and asked for extra spicy. Four hours after the meal, my mouth was still numb and my stomach felt like it was on fire.

Other than their main courses, the desserts are also pretty good, although I personally think they may be a tad too sweet for my liking. However, the fragrant coconut milk they put in majority of their desserts can make up for the sweetness. Well, almost.

The beverages are mostly milkshakes and blends. I love the Chiang Mai Mango Blend a lot! The mangoes used to blend the beverage are really fragrant and sweet, and they don’t try to cut costs by adding mango flavouring. The result is a perfect, creamy mango flavoured blend that soothes your mouth and throat after a hearty meal of tom yam.
