A New Climbing Exprience
For experienced climbers like me who has been training her few years at Climb Asia, Onsight offers a totally new concept (think extremely open and spacious) and has its speciality rooted in other aspects.
High Wall routes are more power/strength based, compared to Climb Asia's routes of being more techniques based.
Their Lead Walls are quite a sight though, given the large space Onsight possess, they have really put it to good use by creating huge, magnificent, even towering Lead walls frequently used in competitions. I think Onsight is really good and superior to many other climbing gyms in this aspect, so if you're looking for some not-so-cheap but relatively still affordable thrill, head down to Onsight!
I don't exactly like the texture of the wood-based walls compared to Climb Asia though, I guess it's just personal preference. The climbing handholds are totally different from what Climb Asia has to offer so you could try both gyms. What Onsight has to offer though is a wider array of climbing walls for you to climb on. They used to have landing crash pads that weren't very seasoned and tad hard to land on, but they have since introduced softer layers of mattress/crash pads so I'm quite pleased with that.
Beginner and kid friendly
Onsight climbing gym is, in my opinion, one of the more beginner-friendly gyms in Singapore. They have a variety of boulder walls, with taped routes suitable even for children.
Besides bouldering, they also offer a lot of high wall routes and indoor lead climbing routes, which is rare in Singapore. And good for rainy days too!
However, there's a trade-off for the spaciousness and variety - the tiles are not shuffled as regularly as other gyms, hence I would recommend tackling each problem slowly and climbing with friends so that you can set your own routes and not get bored of the ones there!
All in all, however, the staff are friendly and courteous, and the climbers there will help you if you seem lost and in need.
A good climbing experience
I've been climbing leisurely for a few years, but early this month, a friend brought me to onsight climbing and immediately, I was hooked! don't be deceived by it's rather-old exterior and furnishings, they are nothing short of functional.
We paid $15 - student price to enter the climbing area and we headed straight for the boulders. Their rocks are pretty strategically placed - hence providing a different challenge with each different color codes. I've been to a couple of bouldering places and some of their different color codes didn't really have much of a difference from one another.
The staff working there were really nice! It's always good to enter the a place with good service and I'm realyl thankful for that. When you're tired from a long day, and need some exercise to vent your frustrations to vent your anger, the last thing you need is bad customer service. So thankfully, I didn't get any of that rubbish from Onsight.
One thing that *kinda* grossed me out was the placement of sofas by the sides of the walls - simply because it's pretty gross to just sit on one of the sofas, with your sticky and sweaty body, and after that, other people sit on them too, right?
But besides the sofas, no complaints and definitely will be back for more and more!
I started climbing since I joined it as my CCA in school. The schoold climbers were often encouraged to climb at climbasia as it is one of the oldest climbing gyms in Singapore.
When when more climbing gyms were established, my friends and I decided to try out one of the newer gyms. Even more so because this particular gym was in the east, where we stay.
The gym was empty when we went. Perhaps it was the location and because few people knew about it. It was smaller then expected, and we gave up climbing in about half a day because the tiles were new, it kept scratching out hands as we climbed and we went home with blisters all over that day.
Onsight Climbing gym is currently the climbing mecca of Singapore. It is big and caters to climbers of different interests, making it very worthwhile.
However, the lighting there is extremely terrible and can make the whole place seem depressive. They also do not shuffle their bouldering wall regularly, and this lack of regularly maintenance can get quite annoying. I came back after three months and had to warm up on the same problem again.
Furthermore, the top rope there seems to cater only to amateur climbers and they do not change their routes often. It can get boring when one have already finished trying out all the routes and have nothing else left to do.
While big, I would only recommend this gym to amateur climbers as a seasoned climber would be flat-out bored after a few visits.
so much space and updates
When I heard about this climbing gym from my friends in the climbing scene and found out that it was located near Mountbatten MRT, I was just too eager to rush down and try the gym. Before this climbing gym opened, this little island had only a few places that offer this sport and it was becoming stagnant. Now that Onsight Climbing Gym is marching in, I can see a great deal of competition coming that will hopefully drive other gyms to reinvent themselves.
I love the fact that they will update and change the routes in the gym and that different coloured tapes are for different level of climbers. Oh, do you know that Onsight even holds birthday parties for kids to climb the high walls? Not only that, Onsight offers abseiling courses other than sport climbing Level One and Two workshops. Another thing Onsight has is a Slackline. I will leave that for you to find out when you get there!
What I love about Onsight is the open space and air ventilation. And the student rates offered are affordable as well. And they have a feedback board too. Every corner of the gym has couches for climbers to rest and have small talks as well, creating an amicable environment. Plus, the staffs are really friendly! What I don’t really like is actually the crash mats used at the bouldering walls.
Being a climber myself, what attracted me to Onsight is the fact that it is the first indoor climbing gym in the East!
I'd say the entrance fee is affordable, as you are entitled to a full day of climbing with multiple re-entry. If you don't know already, they offer student rates too! Just present your student pass upon registration. That being said, Onsight is conveniently located a stone's throw away from Old Airport Road! No need to worry about hunger pangs. Your energy will be replenished in no time!
Onsight has segmented their boulder walls into 3 segments, each catering to different levels of difficulty. For a new climber, there is no need to feel inferior to the pro climbers as you will have your own private space. Veteran climbers themselves get to work out tough routes to conquer together as well.
Climb paradise for all sort of climbers from beginners to professionals! When I first stepped into onsight climb gym, I was blown away by the amount of space this gym occupies! I was greeted by high walls and friendly staffs. The rock holds are very cute for beginners.. There are dino-shaped, animal-shaped, cute-shaped handholds with lots of climb routes to solve. I spent the entire afternoon here and could not wait to return again the following week.
Their shoes for rental are in very new condition and they do not smell bad. There are also lots of space to sit around and rest in between climbs.. There is a 7-eleven store just round the corner outside the gym just in case you need to buy any snacks that the gym itself does not already sell.
The gym is not hard to find as they have a huge banner hung outside the building. Also with the help of google maps on our smartphones, first timers won't have a problem finding their way. Parking is not an issue even after office hours. The nearest mrt is quite a distance away and takes about 15 minutes to walk to the gym.
Indoor fun for all ages
Climbing is one of the lower profile sports in Singapore, but with the recent mushrooming of climbing gyms in Singapore, interest is bound to grow. Onsight gym is a great place for both experienced climbers and those who want to pick up the sport. Each time I'm there, I see veterans doing harder routes on one side, and on the other, kids of no more than 7 years learning how to climb on the lower walls. There are varying levels of difficulty to suit a very diverse group of customers!
It must be said that climbing is a relatively expensive hobby. Entrance is about $8-10, higher than tennis court bookings or entrance at the public swimming pool. It still makes for a fun occasional outing, because there's something for everyone. Even those who don't want to climb can watch the others from the spectator stands, which have been retained from the old Badminton Hall. In the current rainy season, Onsight offers an alternative indoor sport venue too!
