Nice ambience but substandard food
I had read quite a few bad reviews about Novus but I brushed it aside thinking it was just one-off incidents. But now I can attest that the service and food is lacking.
Although most of the service staff are friendly, greeting us with a smile and being attentive. There was one waitress (didnt manage to catch her name) who had a sulky look on and was impatient. She looked very unhappy to be working which made us a bit annoyed. The service was a bit slow too as the staff was often not to be seen.
The mains are priced around $20 - $40. My friends had the Novus Burger ($24) and it was strange to hear that they could only have medium-well done for their beef patties and not medium-rare or anything else. My friends ended up sawing through the dry (apparently oven baked) beef patties which was hard to swallow. When we asked the waiter he just said it was meant to taste like that. Hmm..
My double fried spring chicken ($24) caused our table to laugh in shock/disbelief. It was just half a fried spring chicken slipping around the plate and a small bowl of coleslaw. It was so unattractive and unappetizing. Honestly, it tasted just like a normal fried chicken. Thankfully I was filled up with the complimentary bread basket they had served earlier. Which by the way, was good. The bread rolls were sweet and fluffy!
The ambience is very nice. The tall ceiling with arched windows really create a romantic atmosphere. The small restaurant enables one to have an intimate dinner be it in a group or just 2 people. The decor is tastefully done up with interesting lamps/lights and flowers.
I would probably not return again, unless its to try their desserts which I've read are pretty decent.
