Specialising in traditional tao huey (beancurd) and fresh-made soymilk, N&B snacks is a small franchise that can be found in areas such as Potong Pasir and Serangoon. The franchise also expanded into snacks, which sees them selling chicken pies, apple puffs, tuna puffs and croissants.

Hearty breakfast!

N&B snacks is a childhood favorite of mine, with Sunday treats such as chicken pie, croissants, and tau huey often tantalizing my tastebuds and sending them on field trips to cloud 9.

For the price of $2, one can get a huge bowl of silky beancurd that slides easily down your throat. Their signature beancurd and soya bean milk are made fresh everyday, thus providing a healthy, refreshing, and perfect companion to the pastries sold.

Other than their soybean products, the store also sells an assortment of pastries such as those listed above. My personal favorite is the chicken pie with its creamy chicken filling and buttery shortcrust; coming a close second would be their croissants with its deliciously flaky and crispy layers.

If you happen to see the signboard saying “N&B Snacks”, do not hesitate. Go in and give yourself a good treat. You’re unlikely to be disappointed.

Among my childhood favourites

I was recently back at N&B, yet again, just to satisfy my cravings. Having not been suckled as an infant, it was constantly joked about in my family that as a baby, I had N&B soymilk in substitution of breast milk, and I had this feeling that the reason I somehow found myself back was due to some primal cry somewhere in my mind.

Being a faithful customer of this franchise, I constantly purveyed this shop in the hopes that my dollars would be able to prop it up. Situated in a quiet neighbourhood in Serangoon, I had the shop to myself with the exception of an old man reading his newspaper whilst consuming his tao huey (beancurd) in the bright, sunny Saturday afternoon. I had my customary chicken pie, croissant and cold soya bean milk, which adds up to $7.10, but its a price that I'm always willing to pay. Moreover, I would have this habit of buying some chicken pies to take away afterwards.

Now, you may find it quaint that a soya bean milk store is selling croissants and chicken pies. But that is the thing I love about the place. Its chicken pies are definitely a must try, as the crust is crispy and tastes heavenly, and the filling of chicken and mushrooms is heavenly. Moreover, the croissant is just right and not to mention that a crunchy croissant tastes good as well!

On the soya bean front, N&B is indeed one of the last bastions of authentic hot soya milk and tao huey (beancurd). With the prevalence of Lao Ban, where soyabean curd comes as a whole, it is rare to find a shop where pieces of soyabean curd as meticulously prepared and scooped up individually with a sugary syrup being added to it. Moreover, the soyabean milk, at the first taste, is telling. It tastes rich and not too sweet, displaying the underlying care taken to prepare it. Hence, I found the $2 price not too much to pay for such a wonderful product.

Calling all soyabean lovers! Please purvey this franchise! I really hope it will stay around for years to come.
