The only place where you can get snacks from, 24/7
7/11 is scattered all around Singapore, and we often forget to show our appreciation for it. Having a snack past midnight is so convenient when you are around 7/11.
Don't expect a large variety of food, but the range they carry is enough to satisfy a growling stomach in the middle of the night. They also offer savoury steamed buns and lo mai ka, or mashed potato from a machine. It is also one of the few places that sells Slurpee – a diabetic mixture of ice and syrup. 7/11 is also known for its tasty and crisp crackers called “Hotties”, but they only get refilled occasionally so it depends on your luck.
Prices at 7/11 are a few cents more expensive than your usual Cold Storage or NTUC, but those few cents won’t matter when your stomach growls for food at 2am.
7 Eleven is actually quite similar to Cheers. However, what 7 Eleven has that Cheers does not, is Slurpee!
This flavoured-ice-drink-thing is quite popular with young people. Growing up, I had Slurpees a lot! I realise now that I was one unhealthy kid. Then again, it's not entirely my fault. I don't know what it is about these slushies that is so addictive. It's definitely not the brain freeze, though. I hate that part! x.x
One good thing about Slurpees, though, is that they are just HEAVENLY on a sweltering hot day (which is pretty much every other day in this country). Slurpees aside, 7 Eleven sells the standard convenience store goods like candy, ice cream, magazines, etc. Don't come here looking for the lowest prices though. Chances are, you would be able to get the same item for lesser elsewhere.
You pay for convenience
7-11 is located conveniently at many locations in Singapore and because it is 24 hours, it just adds points to the store itself. Sometimes, in the middle of the night, where all supermarkets closed, there is a 7-11 there to your rescue. It is like an emergency kinda store for me so I don't usually frequent it, unless I have to pay the bills, or I'm having strong cravings or something in which I am too lazy to get to the supermarkets. Of course, the prices are much higher than the usual supermarket prices which just make it ridiculous for everyday shopping, but I suppose once in a while, when you really have no choice is fine.
However, note that some 7-11(the small stores especially) doesn't sell contact lens disinfection solution, but they sell contact lens eyedrops, I don't know where is the logic but that's what happened to me in the middle of the night when I realised I forgot to get a new bottle of solution. But they do sell most of the emergency products you need for an overnight stay - toothbrush kit, disposable undergarments etc.
It is a place of great convenience; that is when you don't mind paying a little more. Try to get what you need at supermarkets before you think about 7-11, but it is a great place for paying the bills (the whole process is pretty quick).
marked up prices. advisable to purchase only when there are no other alternatives.
7-11 is widely known as being one of the most expensive convenience stores around. With $3+ for 10 eggs and up to $5 for butter, this is definitely true. I have to say this: DO NOT buy anything from here if NTUC and other convenience stores are open. Let's say, a Kinder Bueno twin pack costs $1.50 at NTUC, but at 7-11, it can go up to $2.60! Of course, you can still buy items with fixed price here. Such items are bread, milk, magazines and newspapers. Everywhere sells them at the same price.
Although 7-11 is notorious for its high prices, it has in-house promotions and sets that you can purchase at a value price. For example, a cup noodle and a cup of soft drink would cost you $2 when the cup noodle itself is priced at $1.50. The fact that it is opened 24 hours a day would mean that you have an alternative in the middle of the night when you are hungry. You can also settle miscellaneous stuff here such as bill payments and EZ-link top-up. All in all, avoid this place if there are other cheaper alternatives and only go there in the middle of the night if you really need something and have nowhere else to get them.
Convenience right at your doorstep
Seven-eleven, it’s a store and more! It really is a store and more. Besides the usual food, drinks and titbits available at all mama shops, they also sell sandwiches, waffles, big gulp and slurpee! I especially love the slurpee drink, especially the apple flavour one! Although the titbits and drinks are a little more expensive at 7-11, their big gulp, slurpee and waffles are not! With the student deal, it’s just $1 for a large slurpee!
What i really liked about 7-11 is also the services they offer! Top-up service for ez-link cards are available at all 7-11 stores if you do not live near a MRT station and need to top up your card. The service provided by the 7-11 staffs are really good too! It’s always smiles whenever i step into the store.
One more plus point is that it is 24 hours, unlike your usual mama shops. That probably explains why their things are more expensive than your usual price but it’s all worth it, especially during the night when you are so hungry and craving for a packet of cup noodles or potatto chips. However, because of the price, you may choose to shop at mama shop during the day and visit 7-11 for your convenience at night.
