Brilliant coffee in a quaint hideaway
Papa Palheta, undoubtedly one of the best coffee joints in Singapore, if not the best, is a quiet hideout tucked behind a row of shophouses off the Newton Circus roundabout.
Stepping into the cafe, I was immediately greeted by the warm aroma of freshly grinded coffee beans. Many people come to Papa on the weekends for an afternoon coffee while they nestle themselves in the large sofas and peruse the day's newspaper. The store is lined with old cupboards with antique trinkets, adding to the illusion that you are sitting right in somebody's living room.
The coffee here is simply divine, and yet they do not technically charge even a cent for a cup of their freshly and lovingly brewed coffee, but ask for a donation from customers in exchange.
Artisinal coffe experience
Perhaps only true coffee enthusiasts would seek out this rather inconvenient place for their coffee fix, yet once inside, the alluring smell of fresh coffee explains why the trouble is worth it.
Papa Palheta prides itself on artisanal coffee brewing and takes coffee brewing to a whole new level of science and art – especially for those used to starbucks and coffee bean (myself included). They use a variety of brewing machinery from the French press to the Syphon and sitting at the counter watching each drip of your beverage drop into the cup really enhances your coffee experience.
Coffee novices need not be intimidated as the staff there are usually friendly and eager to explain more about the coffee they serve. A point to note is that there is no charge for the coffee here – but this is not to be taken as Free Coffee. The idea is to sample the coffee before buying the beans. If however, you choose not to purchase the beans, just leave a tip in the bowl before leaving to show them your appreciation for the dedication put into your drink.
