Cinema worth going

GV has long been my primary cinema to go to for movies since I live close one. The place always looks good and their snacks and popcorn are good too. Buying tickets is very easy, if you go there personally there are a few lines for online booking, visa line and the normal queue line. I have not tried booking online but my friends had and it was quite easy and hassle free. Checking for movie timing and slots are easy as well and I felt that the updating of seats were quite prompt.

Other perks like being a member can save $1 on combo, birthday treats and more so being a member is awesome since it is free. I also like the perks of having bank cards as they offer cheaper prices with the use of certain bank cards like DBS/POSB, which I find myself using all the time and I can go to the visa queue line as well for buying tickets quickly.

I would recommend GV for friends, family and couples. The seats, screen and sound system is great and the seat are actually quite comfy for me.

a decent but unremarkable moviegoing experience

Beyond the accessibility of GV cinemas, with their various branches located at highly convenient malls around Singapore, my movie going experience at GV has been wholly unremarkable, and perhaps not as enjoyable as that of other cinemas.

For one, while there is nothing to gripe about the technical screening of the movies, GV does not have any special or distinguishing characteristic setting itself apart from other cinemas, such as Filmgarde's Dolby Surround Sound system.

Furthermore, I personally feel that the popcorn GV sells isn't as tasty, crunchy, and is perhaps less fresh than that from other cinemas such as Shaw. For a foodie like me, this difference in the quality of the classic movie snack does influence my decision in choosing a cinema to visit!

Maybe shine a touch on your seat before you sit ??

Well, GV has always been my favorite hang-out place since I am a huge movie fan. As a student I am more than willing to spend time at GV to enjoy the discount while it lasts. I will skip the audio and visual critic since I don’t specialize in these areas. My only concern is the hygiene of the cinemas.

Unfortunately for my case, since I love to watch movies in the wee-hour I ended up seeing things that I shouldn’t. I see lot of stains on those red chairs as GV always have their lights on in the early morning. It just made the whole movie watching experience unpleasant. However I managed to psych myself to believe that the chairs that I am sitting in are clean and continued to sit through movies after movies.

Just your typical mall theater

To me, Golden Village is just your average shopping mall theatre and there is nothing special about it. Ticket prices are usually a dollar or two higher than other theatres and there are very little promotions offered. Food and beverage prices are also a little pricey but that is expected of all movie theatres.

The viewing experience is also just mediocre. The audio system is not fantastic at all and could really do better in my opinion. As for the movie screens, the image tends to get distorted from time to time and this really bugs me. I was watching Transformers in GV Tampines 2 years ago and 30 minutes into the movie the entire show stopped running and froze for 10 minutes. After which, the movie restarted and that really ruined my experience for a movie I was eagerly waiting for months.
There was no update from the staff when the screen froze and no apology was given at all. From then on my perception of GV has been ruined.

Cinema quality not up to par with others

I don't really like Golden Village because of the poor screen quality compared to other cinema outlets such as Cathay. The price of a student ticket is also quite high. If you go to other outlets like Cathay, the ticket prices are around 1 dollar cheaper and you get a free drink as well. I've patronised several GV outlets- Bishan, yishun etc. and am disappointed in all of them.

For one, the screens would occasionally flicker and distort which just about ruins the movie experience. For another, the seats are too low and uncomfortable. Alright, I may sound too picky about this but if given a choice, I would choose another cinema over GV.

Disappointing experience at Couples Cinema

My first experience at GV couples cinema was a disappointing one. My boyfriend and I have been GV's regular customers for the past few years and decided to try out the new couples cinema at City Square mall. Given that there are really limited seats for each movie session, we booked our tickets online. The environment was a pleasant one. However, I feel that the staff should pay attention to minor details such as to switch off the lights before the start of the movie. Initially we thought that it was just a small negligence on their part and they would realise it soon, but it was not the case even after half an hour of the movie screening. My boyfriend ended up having to go out and inform them about it.

The couple cinema may hold very little viewers as compared to a usual movie theatre, but it does not suggest that staff should not be more careful. I feel that it is not worth paying $26 for such an experience, which excludes the booking fee. I'm just glad that we did not choose to watch it on a weekend.

Limited edition stuff at GV!

Blame me for being a typical Singaporean as I 'brag' about how great these limited edition stuff are, but as I type this review, an 'Avengers' cup is sitting right next to me on my desk. In my opinion, all the theatres in Singapore are up to my standards. GV, however, has excelled in making their patrons come back again and again. I'm not sure what attracts me so much to GV, although I'm pretty sure it's the comfort it gives me.

They offer limited edition stuff too, although you have to buy it. I got myself an 'Avengers' popcorn set, where I got a large popcorn (I presume) and a cup of sprite. The drink was given to me in that limited edition cup itself, and I didn't like it. I had to take the trouble of washing it before I could take it home. I might sound like a sissy, but washing a cup when you have to carry so many things with you is uncool (they also gave me a hulk figurine for the cup and a cardboard thingy (not sure what it is for, though).

I'm sure that if they are able to offer such great items, they would also be able to give you a plastic bag or something similar. GV has to understand that not everyone brings a bag with them!

Huge theatre, Stiff seats.

I watched the movie Ted at Golden Village VivoCity over the weekend. I was rather surprised to find out that their GVMax theatre tickets and their usual GV Digital thratre ticket prices were both $11. After a MasterCard discount, I only paid $9.50 per ticket!

The GVMax theatre is a colossal 602-seater! The width of 2 buses, the screen is humongous and can be fully appreciated only when seated right smack in the centre. With affordable nachos combo and a host of other calorie-busting snacks, be rest assured that you'll be able to catch your movie whilst having tasty snacks.

The only drawback are the seats in GVMax, which are really stiff and in an upright position. I was forced to catch the entire movie in a pretty much upright position. While there's a lot of leg-space, I was suffering from a stiff neck and back at the end of the movie. My recommendation is to avoid the first 6 rows completely.

Limited collectable items at gv!

The best part I like about Golden Village is the popcorn combo! For those new blockbusters movie, there will be a new figuring/collectables item available with the popcorn combo set. This excites me every time a new movie is out because golden village is going to release a new collectables items!! From what I’ve known, golden village is the first to release this type of collectable items while other movie theaters like Cathay start to come out with it too. The recent Hunger Game was being offered the mocking jay pins to those who purchase the combo sets.
Example during the showing of Alvin and the chipmunks, they offered a combo of popcorns, drinks and a free collectible pen.

Also, Golden Village offers a variety of discount to different cardholders. DBS cardholders would be able to enjoy the privilege of watching at $7 on normal days while others have to pay more. An advice to those who have visa/MasterCard is to purchase their ticket online. Save more on the ticket and pay $1 on the booking fees is more worth it. In addition, you can also choose the seats that you want on that certain date. Highly recommended to those who love to collect limited edition items!

Classy but so what

Classy? Yes. Comfortable? Yes. Clean? Yes. Golden Village has all the qualities that a movie-goer might look for for a movie screening. However, it doesn’t satisfy mine. So what if it’s classy and spacious when the prices are so expensive and the service i get from the crew is so bad? I always get a bitter feeling inside whenever i visit Golden Village.

Golden Village price its movie tickets much higher than its fellow counter parts. Just take a look at its student price. Other cinemas like Eng Wah, Shaw and Cathay sell student priced tickets at $6 or $6.50 and Golden Village? It’s an exorbitant $7 for a student ticket. This is like the price of a normal movie ticket in Eng Wah. You might call me a miser and just being anal about a few cents but i personally feel that Golden Village is exploiting its customers. It plays on the fact that it has many branches, in fact the most branches, in Singapore and so have no qualms about pricing its tickets much higher than the other cinemas since many of us still patronise them anyway.

Another thing about Golden Village that really makes me boil is the service they provide. The crew members behind the counter doesn’t even put in effort to smile or give us the quality service. They look up at you, ask you what do you want and when you seem to hesitate awhile about how many or what time of the movie tickets you should buy, they get impatient and show that they are impatient right in your face. This i cannot tolerate. We are all here to have a good time and nothing is worse than getting fed up before the movie. The bad service i received doesn’t happen just one or twice, but everytime i’m at Golden Village until i stopped going there entirely.
