Yan Palace Restaurant Hot
Long known for its dim sum and authentic Cantonese cuisine, Yan Palace is the favourite haunt of many business professionals and families. It is not unusual to see a long queue during weekends when families take the opportunity to enjoy a sumptuous meal together. Of course, it's also the uncompromised food quality, friendly service, and reasonable prices that keep the customers coming back for more.

Non-member gets a 5% surcharge !
I don't often patronise this eatery...the last time maybe 6-7 months ago...so when I visited the restaurant again this morning, I realized why the long gaps between...the food. Our dim sum order came fast and brisk (typical for fast paced dim sum restaurants, as it's all prepared), but it somehow lacked the piping hot, steaming type that I expected of at most dim sum establishment.
That somehow was a dampener...then the food taste...our "must-have" har kow and siew mai were only just warm, rather a tad firm and stuck together when we tried to pick it out from the steam basket...and the taste ? just passable. I can get equivalent offerings (or better even) from humdrum hawker dim sum stalls. Our century egg porridge came out also slightly hotter than warm and was another let down. Certainly lacks the finesse of most Chinese eateries.
Likewise, the rest of our orders like pork-ribs, chicken feet, spring rolls, egg tarts, etc did not improve our dining experience a bit. Then the came the dish that broke the camel's back - the BBQ Pork Buns. To me, it signify the standard of a dim sum restaurant...and here, it failed big time. The filing were just about edible BUT the skin was too thick! and as in the rest of the dim sum...just warm and not piping hot. Gosh...I almost wanted to reject this order...
This must have been the fastest we ever completed a dim sum lunch...in just under 25min ! We usually spent at least 45min for a dim sum lunch, going through various courses happily. But due to the lackluster standard...we simply felt like leaving as soonest as possible. Then came the next shock...being non-member at the country club which this branch is located, we were loaded with a 5% no-member surcharge ! I am not sure where I have my next dim sum meal....but I definitely know which I will never go again.
