Awesome seafood!

My family frequents Jumbo Seafood, simply because they offer one of the best seafood dishes in town. Their signature dish Chilli Crabs is ridiculously good. The restaurant is really generous with the portions. The crabs contain a lot of meat, which is juicy, tender and succulent, and go well with the addictive chilli sauce. We can easily wipe out two plates of fried mantous dipped in the sweet and spicy chilli sauce.

Some of the other dishes are worth mentioning too, such as their steamed fish and scallops. The seafood served here is extremely fresh, and the quality of the food is really good. Jumbo offers a lot of discounts and vouchers for their customers, so we are usually able to get discounts when we eat at Jumbo, which is a bonus for our dining experience.

The only downside of this restaurant is that service tends to be a little slow and messy, especially during peak hours. We can usually get a table quickly because of reservations, but it takes some patience to wait for the food, especially when you're hungry and the food aroma from other tables come wafting around you. But everything will be worth the wait once the food arrives.

Good food, but awful service

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of food at the restaurant, i am usually rather harsh when it comes to critiquing seafood, but this left me when few words of negativity. My family and i ordered a plate of pepper crab which was simply delicious. the peppery gravy had successfully permeated the shell of the large hefty crab, oozing flavor with every bite. It had a pleasant after taste, which was subtle and not too overpowering of its peppery disposition.

As much as i enjoyed the food, i wish i could say the same about the service. I was starving when i stepped into the restaurant and we quickly placed orders hoping to be served within the usual fifteen minutes. However, we were appalled when the food took close to half an hour to arrive! We were at the branch at Dempsey Hill where there is a separate room from the main restaurant with seating available. it was nice at first, to get away from the noisy crowd, but it started to anger us when we realised that hardly any of the staff rounded around our table which made ordering food a complete hassle. We had to wait at least 5 minutes until a waiter would come by and take any additional orders.

I would only recommend Jumbo Seafood for those who walk in with plenty of time in their hands, and some grub in their stomach to begin with.

Love their discount vouchers for members!

I signed up for Jumbo membership because they regularly send $50 discount vouchers for minimum $150 spent, which I usually use when I bring my family there for dinners. They also have tear out coupons on their calendars for monthly promotion, and this month is 50% off prawns. I love their drunken live prawns so I'll be going for it for sure!

SCB credit cards had a value for money promo set a couple of months back, and I hope they will have more such promos. Sometimes that have wine on promotion as well and this time round you get a bottle of wine free with every order of Boston lobsters.

Their outlets in Riverside Point and Riverwalk Galleria makes it an ideal location for business lunches and dinners for those working in town. However I personally prefer their Dempsey outlet as there are many chillout places nearby after dinner.

Worth the hype!

Jumbo is undeniably one of the better known seafood restaurants in Singapore, and for a restaurant to receive such rave reviews from Singaporeans, who are usually absolute food critics, it definitely says something about the restaurant, and I was certainly not disappointed.

Jumbo is known for its Chilli crab, and it was a no-brainer for my family to order that particular dish. The restaurant definitely does not scrimp on its seafood, because the crab that my family received was well-sized and harboured enough crab meat to go around. The sauce was spicy, yet not overly so, and it was delicious enough for me to keep scooping out more of it - a rare case, because I'm usually not very good at taking spice.

The fried buns, otherwise known as Man tou, are a must! The buns are always served fresh and piping hot, so the outer layer is delightfully crispy, while the breaded interior is soft. Dip the fried buns in the Chilli crab sauce for a wondrous combination.

My family also ordered a dish of tofu, which was pretty good as well. But then again, I don't think I have ever seen a restaurant go wrong with tofu.

My only gripe with Jumbo is that it is ridiculously oily. Most of the dishes, if not all, are served with such a greasy appearance that it really made me doubt the health quotient of this restaurant. The sauce for the Chilli crab was served with an obvious layer of oil, and it was mildly repulsive, though the delectable taste of it eventually wore out the initial repulsion.

Prices are a little hefty at Jumbo, but for seafood of relatively good quality, I'd say the price is well worth it. Though not a go-to restaurant for a student like myself, the restaurant will definitely be among my choice venues to hold a family dinner or gathering.

Irresistible Chili Crab....Caution - Repeat visits imminent !

Certainly one of Singapore best seafood restaurants....the wide range of dishes and tastes will certainly go well with most diners whether it seafood and meat dishes, spicy or otherwise.Highly recommended dishes include its signature dish : Chili Crabs (order the deep fried buns to go with the gravy) and Black Pepper Crabs. Do request for the restaurant's bib , so any splashes from the delicious gravy will be shield by it. You can also ask for a few extra to keep as souvenirs (especially for tourists) .

Service is brisk but can get somewhat "delayed and confused" during peak dining hours between 7-8pm, especially on weekends and public holidays. Other great dishes include the deep fried Tilapia fish, scallop in yam basket, bamboo clams, prawn fritters on "you tiao" (sort of deep fried flour pastry)....Trust the chef recommendation (as stated on the menu)...you will be satisfied. Prices are between the mid-high range. I took a bottle of champagne to entertain my clients once but no corkage charge was levied.

Definitely a great venue for a tourists last meal in Singapore prior departing for home as its just 15min taxi ride from Changi Airport.

As fresh as it gets

Being seafood enthusiasts, my parents, Hubbs and I are always on the lookout for the freshest seafood available and Jumbo never fails to exceed our expectations for that. Fresh seafood that is stir fried, pan seared, grilled, raw sashimi style, baked, they have the whole nine yards of cooking styles.

Personal favorites would be their Scallop yam, Chili Crab with fried buns, Crisp baby squid and Seafood dough fritters.Their take on Scallop yam is fresh scallop encased in yam before it goes into a deep frying process. It's served with a sweet sauce and that's it! Simple ingredients but they fuse together so well in the palate. Chili crab with fried buns is well, chili crab with fried buns. The star here is their chili gravy which is so savory, spicy yet sweet and slurpilicious! The fried buns are just there to mop up whatever gravy that is left on the plate.

The Crisp baby squid is Dadsy's and Hubb's absolute favorite. They would take turns clipping at the crisp baby squid dish with their chopsticks until the last morsel of squid calls for a chopstick fight. They would mock shoot each other eye daggers and poise their chopsticks for a battle. (Normally Dadsy would win the chopstick fight, since Hubbs is not so adept at using chopsticks. ^^) "Crunchy", says Dadsy. "Sweet and buttery", says Hubbs. Well, it's their call. Cereal prawns

Seafood dough fritters are Mumsy's must-order dish at Jumbo's. Fresh seafood is minced and folded into squid paste, it is piled into an open belly of a dough fritter and fried then sprinkled with sesame seeds. The end product is crunchy and chewy at the same time. What else but good old mayonnaise to dip it in.

We like the atmosphere at Jumbo's because it is just so lively. It will never be too long before someone in the family suggests for a visit to Jumbo. It's that good!

Overrated.

I don't know why this restaurant is so popular in general, and famed for their chilli crab (which I thought was mediocre). I think I will choose Crystal Jade or Lao Beijing or Tung Lok over this place any time, if I have a desperate craving for some good Chinese fare.

We had their must-try (according to my mom) chilli crab, a dish of some baby vegetables (kailan, I believe), a creamy prawn salad nestled in some fried, battered thing, spinach-stuffed fried tofu, and some cuttlefish paste coated in sesame seeds and deep fried.

The chilli crab was so sweet and not spicy enough that I thought I was eating dessert as I mopped up the greasy sauce with their fried buns. I have never liked chilli crab for this reason, and Jumbo's version has served only to reinforce my aversion towards the dish than change my mind.about it.

The fried cuttlefish paste coated with sesame seeds was not anything amazing either. I actually hated it. It had a texture reminiscent of fish cake (which I detest), and there was just no way to scrape off all the sesame seeds (which I detest also) off that thing without entirely ripping off the crisp exterior. It didn't help that I dipped that fried thing into the accompanying peanut sauce, which was even sweeter than the chilli crab. So this was the worst dish we had. Flavour combinations were extremely weird.

I did, however, enjoy the veggies, which had a simpler, cleaner flavour, though I would have preferred if it was served with less sauce. I also enjoyed the spinach-stuffed tofu.

On the whole, Jumbo gets a thumbs-down for me. It's absolutely overrated.

Extremely satisfying

Always, I repeat, ALWAYS, visit Jumbo Seafood with your family members or a large group of friends. Seafood does not come cheap of course, especially good seafood like Jumbo's, and their specialty dishes come in huge portions that have to be shared amongst many people.

I always have an enjoyable time eating at Jumbo Seafood. Their chilli crabs are almost perfect - the spiciness is just right and their crabs always taste fresh. The fried buns that accompany it are crunchy on the outside, and soft on the inside. A trip to Jumbo without chilli crab is incomplete.

Also check out their oatmeal prawns, another one of my personal favourites. Jumbo Seafood makes one of the best oatmeal prawns I have ever tasted.

The only thing I don't really like is how noisy the entire restaurant is, but I suppose that can't really be helped since everyone is crammed together in a small space.

Does not meet my expectations..

Jumbo Seafood is now well-known in Singapore for its seafood.

I have been to the Dempsey branch for the Chinese New Year's lunch course as well as to the one at East Coast for a hearty dinner.

Both times, I have felt that the food was good but both times, I have also felt that it could have been much better for the price paid.

(FYI, The Chilli Crab was ok, the Pepper Crab was better with a peppery kick.)

Enriching seafood experience!

I always look forward to coming here with my relatives mainly because of the very delicious chilli crab! The outlet we visited lies near the beach at East Coast, offering a cooling atmosphere and a relaxing time at the beach afterwards.

The chilli sauce the crab is dipped in has a very special sweet and spicy taste. I especially enjoy dipping my 'mantou' in the sauce. The crab meat itself is also soft and and delectable. That would be the only time I will be willing to dirty my hands to extract the meat out of its shell.

As for price, definitely a little pricey. But for good quality chilli crab and other seafood, it is worth it to try at least once!
