The Sinpopo BRAND was actually brought back by the team behind Awfully Chocolate. Sinpopo used to be an infamous watering hole back in its heyday. Today it serves up local cuisine and its decor is big on nostalgia.

Be "transported" back to the '50s.
One thing that you will conclude after a meal at Sinpopo - you are paying basically for the retro ambience. For the food, you are better served elsewhere. That said, a trip to Sinpopo is a visual treat. It would be quite an experience for those with grand parents, or elderly parents, to bring them there for a nostalgic "teleportation". But they will probably gawked at the prices, though. Imagine , 2 strips of fried flour fritters (you tiao) served a little of bowl of hay kor (shrimp paste) cost about $7/-. Yes, I know, we are in a new millennium. Time to pay high prices.
The menu are printed in brown jotter book of yesteryears, the enamel cups that hold the iced drinks even chipped to look worn out, the retro tiled flooring, the archaic crockeries, etc all set the mood.
But are the offerings, while pricey, any good? Well, I can only say it's doable. So far, I tried the desserts, so I can only comment on that. The chendol gula melaka are pretty similar to some eateries in Malacca Jonker Street (in that, there is no bitter after taste). The Ais Bors (actually Iced Ball) is like an ice kachang compacted into a iced sphere. Quite tricky to suck out the syrups really, before enjoying the content within. And the Sng Muay Pop (lced Lime & Sour plum drink) is great for a hot day.
Would I visit Sinpopo again? Why not? Would be a great idea to bring overseas friends, too, to share what Singapore used to be. And how far we have come.
