A Family Bookstore
Popular Bookstore might be all Singaporeans' childhood buddy. The launch of Bookworm Series was so successful that every little kid may have become a member of Popular Bookstore just because of this book series.
It’s a family bookstore to be exact. All categories of books catering to from a preschooler to an adult. It does have every little of this and that, and because of this, there may be limited range in each category. They don’t carry all titles in each book section.
If you are looking for specific books, Kinokuniya will be the bookstore to head to.
Not forgetting, they do have a huge supply for stationeries. Most of them are cost worthy. I don’t suggest purchasing printer ink supplies or cds/dvds from Popular as they are easily overpriced.
Just stick to the books and stationaries, and avoid electronics, photo albums and gift items.
Popular Bookstore is generous with their books discounts. I just gotten a buy-2-get-1-free deal recently. Thus, grabbing all I need, I ended up with $24 for 3 books. I had put myself on a ban from Popular Bookstore in case I end up purchasing too many books. It's cheap you know!
If you are looking to buy language help books. Try to call up some language schools for the price of their textbooks before getting them from Popular. You might get a cheaper option.
Some branches have extended their space to include cafes such as the one at Bras Basah Road, aiming to par with their rivals Borders and Kinokuniya that have already incorporated such facilities. Popular isn't a sophiscated place where you can spend hours in there. It is cluttered with everything and human traffic, thus will serve only as a touch and go bookstore.
Nevertheless, Popular Bookstore remains the longest standing bookstore in Singapore, outlived the dynasties of Borders and Page One bookstores that recently underwent a downfall of empires.
A little of everything
Popular Bookstore, a place I've frequented way too many times, yet it never grows old. I can easily spend an hour in any popular outlet, just browsing through all that it has to offer. In the past, I am always excited when my mum brings me to Popular because it meant that I could have new stationeries and story books. Now, I enjoy browsing through shelves after shelves of books, magazines, stationaries, computer games and more. Within an outlet itself, Popular would be neatly divided into different sections. If you are in a hurry, you can easily zoom into the particular section and find the items you need in a jiffy. If you cannot find something you want, the helpful customer service officer will be glad to be of service.
There are so many sections I enjoy in Popular. I love smell of new books, and would often be caught checking out the latest bestselling novels at the book section. For people who love to cook, they have recipe books as well. Non-fictional inspiring self-improvement books can be found in that section as well. Also, for those who are teaching tuitions like me, there are a variety of assessments books for you to choose from, at a low price too!
If you are looking for some fun and games, Popular offers not only educational games but also various PC-games for children 3 and up. They also have a wide array of games and toys, ranging from old-school board games like Monopoly and Scrabble to Barbies and the newer Bay Blades and DIY robots. There are also cuddly soft toys and card stocks for those who are looking for last minute gift ideas!
All-in-all, Popular Bookstore is unlike many other bookshops out there. Other than the geeky stuff, they also offer a wide range of other products, making it a store of much convenience.

The essential book and stationery store
Located in various malls and schools islandwide, Popular is accessible and efficient.
But I have still been disappointed on a few occasions when looking for specific books as the store I went to did not have it in stock. I would suggest calling up the store you will be visiting to check on their stock to avoid making wasted trips.
I also highly recommend signing up for their 3-year membership card as the many discounts that come with it will definitely help you to get your money's worth.
It grew up with me. I can still vividly remember the times when my mother and I would 'shop' for the long list of textbooks and stationery with the help of those Popular shop elves. Also, I fancy the never-ending collection of useful assessment books and storybooks, although would i read later at home would be another story.
Dubbed the Borders of Singapore, I find it even better then big B as firstly and most obviously, Popular survived till now. Next, it has a wider range of items and initiatives that benefit students, working adults and the retired elderly. No matter which branch it is, I will always patronise a Popular store as I believe and am often proven right, there is a lot more to see and learn at each and every branch.
It's a pity that Prologue, part of the Popular group, closed a few months back. To me, Prologue was Popular's epitome of industry-leading bookstore with a sense of snug comfort. On many afternoons when I'm off duty, I guess this place ranks top on my list of hideouts.
Finally, as a member myself, I enjoy the perks it offer, including a magazine that is rather to laze around with on a lazy day. Want a bigger bang for your buck? Then I recommend signing up for the 1-year membership first.
Needs a wider book selection!
Popular is definitely the place for stationery and other school necessities. They're always well-stocked and you can select from different colours and brands of products. However, don't come here for the books, because there is very little variety. I don't mean the assessment books, but the novels. The collections are rarely updated in my opinion, and the range is far too small for my liking. I prefer to shop for books at Times or Kinokuniya.
That being said, I do appreciate having a stationery store nearby where I can go to get good pens and pencils that are worth my money. Although the titles aren't regularly updated, I have got some good books from here that I like. I'd recommend going for their EXPO sales, as there is a wider range of books there, and they tend to be cheaper.
Popular: For Students
Popular bookstore, the place to be when you need to shop for textbooks, educational guides and stationery. That was my impression and generally what I shopped for when I went to Popular. I never thought of it as a 'serious' bookstore offering a wide variety and books from popular fiction to non-fiction such as biographies. However, it was still a great bookstore nonetheless.
In recent years, I'm having the impression that Popular is attempting to change that, with recent visits to its bigger outlets in Bras Basah and Jurong Point proving me wrong that Popular is boring and has limited choices. I was surprised, browsing through the sections in these 2 outlets.
With that being said, I am glad Popular is expanding its book selection yet still offering a multitude of textbooks, educational materials and stationery in each of it's outlets. Lastly, I'm sure my peers and any student for that matter, would agree that Popular is the place they went for the very same reasons as well. O Level E Maths Ten Year Series being sold out ring a bell?
Every Singaporean's Bookstore
Every Singaporean from the age of 3-90 knows the famous Popular Bookstore! Having worked as a part-time sales assistant there after my ‘O’ levels, I can proudly say that the system of how things work there are good. Sections of stationery, books and electronics are all clearly labeled. Staff can be easily identified and the cashiers are fast!! However, sometimes I feel that they do need to smile a little more.
Now this is some insider information, hehe. If something that you want is not in stock or not available, always remember to ask the staff to call the other outlets to see it is available somewhere else and they can put it on hold for you. Also, please get the membership card because it is so affordable. $5 per year for students.
Can’t remember how much it is for adults, but it’s probably around ten bucks and you get to enjoy many privileges. CDs are usually at NETT price though, which means that you can’t get a discount even if you have the membership card. Lastly, their in house brand stationery are of good value and quality. I always purchase stationery from there in bulk to give out as prices or gifts at my workplace.
The POPULAR bookstore that lives up to its name :)
I believe the "Popular" bookstore is living up to its name. Yes, no doubt its one of the more 'popular' bookstores out there!
I have been patronising Popular ever since I was in primary school. Well, its more like my parents brought me there once every few weeks to fill my house with more assessment books! (Ah, what memories.) Not to mention they have a wide variety to choose from - for all levels too!
Confused where to locate the items you are looking for? Just feel free to ask any staff and they would be more than happy to assist you. (Personally, all my experiences with the staff are positive as they are very helpful)
I love their stationery , with pens ranging from the price of as low as $0.60. Its an almost complete one-stop that is there to fulfil your basic necessities for school. You can get mid-quality to high-quality of stationery there!
Passing by the children storybook section gives me a sense of deeja vu as it used to be my favorite "hangout" location in the store. I would spend hours picking up interesting titles on the shelves and getting all engrossed reading them. What's good too is the reasonable pricing of the books, and there would be occasional offers that will range from $1 - $2.90 per book! It was most fascinating and I would often check back for such sales.
I believe the Popular bookstore will still be a favorite amongst all parents and children alike in time to come. If you are one that frequents the store often, it's advisable to sign up for their membership card that offers a 10% discount on your purchases! It can't get any more awesome, can it?
your stationery and books pit-stop
Popular is just a 5 minutes walk away from my house and I love frequenting there so much even when I have nothing there that I need to purchase.
The stationery sold are of a reasonable price and they even bundle them in bulks. You buy more, you save more! Bulk bundles include lined papers, ballpoint pens, correction tapes and so on. You can save yourself some money if you buy the bulk bundle. They also provide papers for you to test your potential new pen before purchasing. The huge varieties of stationery drives me nuts sometimes. I want everything. I want the dark pink, light pink, pastel pink and all hues and finishes of pens.
Popular divides their books according to genre and assessment books, according to levels. This makes sourcing a book as easy as 1, 2, 3! There are often unwrapped samples of books available for your reading pleasure before you decide to plonk down the cash for the book (there's always a neighborhood library...). Sometimes on a lazy weekday afternoon I do spot some children sitting down and reading the unwrapped sample books. Looks cute and encouraging seeing them so engrossed in reading. The sales assistants did not stop them as well, which is highly encouraging.
Try to get hold of a Popular discount card as it will provide a 10% discount for all items.
Great place for stationery
Popular Bookstore has been standing in Singapore for a few decades. Since young, my mother like to bring me to Popular before school reopens. Sometimes I will be there to get assessment books for revision which I have placed on my study desk till end of the year. After knowing my laziness in doing revision, I've rarely visit Popular as it will be a waste of money since I didn't use the revision books very often. As years past, purchasing school books at my school became a habit and Popular became a place for getting stationery.
You can find many things you need at the Popular. From books to computer games, and many other school neccessary items. You can find a few worthy items at an affordable price like photo albums; sets of pencils, erasers and pens; and files too. It is a heaven for budget people like me. Some staffs are friendly but they always seem busy, which resulted to be less attentive towards customers.
School supplies are ever ready!
Every time when i need a pencil, or pen or maybe even a CD, the Popular bookstore never fails to cross my mind. For every student, regardless of which education level you may be currently still studying in (primary, secondary, tietary and beyond), you would be been to Popular at least once!
This bookstore is well-known for being a bookstore that do not only sells books (textbooks, novels etc.) and stationeries, but also IT gadget accessories, gifts, and music CD. It is a place where i can get all of my necessary school supplies with ease, as it is always conviniently located in a local mall. The layout of the store is also very organised and catergorised, thus ensuring that you would be able to locate what you need in a few minutes. In addition, the staffs there are also pretty helpful when you need help to find something you need, or when you have difficulty in getting your product.
As Popular as it is Named
Popular bookstore is aptly named as it is undeniably the most “popular” among school-goers especially!
I feel that Popular Bookstore is the most accessible compared to others such as big bookshop, which only has a few outlets. On the contrary, Popular Bookstore can be found at almost every single mall. Although some branches are smaller than others, they do not lack in delivering the services and goods that school-goers need.
Popular Bookstore offers a wide range of stationery and both storybooks and assessment books that makes it a convenient place for shoppers compared to the specialized bookstores. They also often have discounts on the more popular books thus you can always get a good bargain! With the membership card, you can be promised great savings and more, as they always give out 20% coupons in their POPCLUB magazine regularly.
The service has always been no problem for me, and the staff is always helpful when you need them to help you find something, even though many of them may be part-timers.
Perhaps, one of the only downsides would be that the queue can get pretty long sometimes as there are so many people who depend on Popular for their stationery needs.
