Expensive arts/design haven
I go to Artfriend at Buona Vista for my theatre studies coursework as I need their materials for my designs. They definitely have everything for any aspiring design or arts students. The service is good; I didn't know where to find drawing boards of the correct material and size and the saleswoman kindly guided me to finding the correct board.
However, nothing there is cheap. I repeat: nothing there is cheap, and if you're a design or arts student, I'm sure you will have a lot of raw materials you need to buy, so be prepared to burn a whole in your wallets!
A One-Stop-Station for Artist-to-be
Art Friend, as we all know, is a one-stop station for the artist-to-be. Normal people like us transform into artist and unleash our creativity and do up cards for our friends and families during events such as Birthdays, Christmas and the various Anniversaries. It is also the time when Art Friend comes in handy.
I love the wide variety of art material and supplies they provide, ranging from model making tools material to the different construction paper we used for making cards, to brushes and paints. There are just so much material that they provide.
In fact, I still remember there was once when I need varnish for my Art lesson to use on a wood finish and I could not find it in a lot of shops. I searched and searched but to no avail, until my friend recommended Art Friend to me. This is where I eventually got my varnish. All thanks to Art Friend!
For any art fanatic
I am an art fanatic, and Art Friend is the place for people like me. Even though it is approximately two hours’ worth train and bus ride, it is worth the trouble to go all the way to Bras Basah, or Orchard, and check out the items there.
There are wide varieties of art materials that you simply can’t get in other stores. What makes Art Friend a bonus than your typical stationery store is that Art Friend’s items have quality. Using quality materials meant no more bad art piece, or having the ink drying up on the first try. Art Friend is the place to go for any art materials crisis.

Great variety of art stuff
As a designer, Art Friend is usually my number one choice when looking for materials to purchase. They sell a crazy range of materials, from wood to acrylic to ceramics to metal and the list goes on. Every time I need a particular material, I just have to visit Art Friend and it magically appears for purchase.
Students or frequent patrons should sign up for their membership card, because it offers a good discount rate. One could literally spend the whole day in there if you aren't sure of what you want to buy. The staff are rather friendly and approachable, so it's quite a good shopping experience for me every single time.
I can go mad here
What would I do without this Art Friend?! Seriously. During the school term, I'd go here a few times a WEEK to get my art supplies and materials. Huge range of items here, basically there's never been a single time in which I couldn't find the thing I was looking for.
The prices can be a bit much, and you can get some of the stuff they sell for a lower price in other places, but it's alright for me. Get their membership card if you can, though! It's definitely worth it, especially if you're a regular (then again, if you are a regular, you're probably already a member!).
The customer service is alright, sometimes they're really nice which is a nice surprise because most times it's just on par.
Get the Card
I was in the Art Club during my Secondary School days. Back then, the teacher-in-charge would always buy our art supplies from Art Friend. I used to wonder why my teacher would rather spend a 30 minute drive than purchasing the supplies from a nearby art store.
It's not the huge range of art products that caught my attention, rather, it's the exceptional service. The staff were wonderful. They were remarkably patient so shopping experience has always been an easy one.
One issue that I have is the price. The canvas is too expensive! I'm pretty sure there are cheaper ones in other stores across Singapore.
Art students might want to get the card. It's much more worth it this way.
With countless of art supplies on racks, it can be rather overwhelming and a tad too confusing. Although, you can always approach the staff for assistance.
Get the card if you buy often
Like all the other reviewers have put it, Art Friend is the best place to get all your art materials at one go. But in my review I would like to add a suggestion for those who have to buy such materials often: get the ArtFriend card. You pay a small fee for a year-long, renewable membership. When my sister and I were students at the nearby Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, I got the membership so we could get discounts for our purchases. Discounts are small, but they add up.
I disagree with one reviewer that the staff are unhelpful. Yes, some of they aren't trained, but among all the staff on duty, one of them will know what you are looking for. If they really don't know, ask around the customers - the experienced art/architecture students will know where to find it.
For those who love art passionately, Art Friend is definitely your friend! They offer everything you need for your masterpieces- white glue, sequins, buttons, crepe paper, colour pencils, markers etc. I personally visit Art Friend whenever I want to buy polymer clay- a special, self-drying clay that allows you to mould it into various artpieces, without creating a mess. The colour of the clay is so vibrant, and creative works of art can be made easily- from fridge magnets to paper weights. I love buying sequins from Art Friend, especially for my sewing projects. It is a great collection of all art essentials.
an artist haven
Art Friend is an artist’s haven, for all art and craft materials. From canvas to acrylic paint and wooden carvings to felt cloth, you name it and they have it.
I will get my canvas, acrylic paint and brushes from Art Friend since the price of the materials are rather reasonable and I am too lazy to just purchase the canvas from the store and hop over to Popular to get the acrylic paint and brushes. For the two items, there is not much price difference. They used to sell a big box of plain cut-out hearts at $20 and they were perfect for making Valentines gifts.
The stores are generally quite packed with art materials and each lane can only snugly fit a single person to walk through. Thus, it takes some patience to be able to move from the front of a row to the back, especially on crowded weekends. Usually, there are not many customers at Art Friend, but the tight squeeze between the lanes and the towering height of art materials can make it seem crowded. Perhaps, certain products like the wooden alphabet carvings can be bought at a cheaper price at another store like Daiso, but Art Friend is better for a one-stop art shopping galore.
