buy the right puffs
Polar sells a diverse range of cakes and puff pastries. My advice will be to steer clear from those huge cakes you see, and to just stick with the separate cakes and puffs.
I had a really bad experience with Polar's cakes. I remember trying the Chocolate square cake on my friend's birthday. It was horrible. The frosting had a jelly like consistency, tasting like mush rather than light whipped cream or sweet buttercream. The cake itself was okay, but the weird frosting overpowered everything else. So no, no more big cakes from Polar. I caved and gave in to Polar's puff pastries though, despite initial reservations from the jelly cake thing. The puff pastries in general were not bad, adequately priced and delicious to the last crumb. The flaky puff pastry is baked to perfection, and there are many types of fillings to choose from - from chicken pie to sausage. My friends also highly recommend the swiss rolls, though for me it's still the pastries I go for.
That said, as a baker, Polar's goodies are quite easy to replicate (with the ease of store bought puff pastry layers), and I myself don't frequent there as often. Only when I'm particularly lazy and when the craving hits will I go purchase a flaky pastry to nibble on.
It's been awhile since i've tasted some of Polar's cakes but i was always longing to favour it again, it's a big company with branches everywhere including Changi Airport, Vivo City and even Tiong Baru road, so it shouldn't be hard to find one. And if you're a first timer at the store, their swiss rolls is a must try! Coated with sugar, it has a smooth surface of powdery sugar which leaves a special after taste in your tongue even after you finished it, which i totally loved! There're other types of puff cakes as well like curry, tuna and chicken filling puff, so it's definitely worth a try!
My first time tasting something from Polar puffs and cakes was during my birthday. My parents bought a mango cake from them and it tasted really good! The flavour of the mango was really strong and I really loved the sweetness of the cake.
Polar also sells puffs of many different fillings, like tuna, chicken ad beef. But my personal favourite is the "special pie" because of the fillings inside( chicken, mushrooms, carrots) and it really tastes fresh. The skin of the puff is a plus as it is very crisp and flaky. Be sure to drop by Polar puffs and cakes to try out their pastries!
Pastries And More!
Polar is one of Singapore's best selling cakes and puffs, which are all at a affordable prices and yet taste really well. When I decided to take something like for the whole day, I'll think about going to Polar because of my favorite Curry Puffs, Chicken Pie and Sugar Rolls for dessert. I simply love the crispiness of the Chicken Pie which cover the the chicken fillings inside of it, and when you take a bite, the chicken fillings goes well with the skin of the pie.
Many parents would usually go to Polar to buy birthday cakes for their children's birthday because the price is affordable and comes with many cute designs such as, guitars, cars, doreamon etc. The good and amazing thing about Polar is that the branches are opening almost everywhere in Singapore, because of their tasty recipes and cheap prices, and they always try to improve and make new and better flavors these years. That is something and It is actually a great example for most Singapore-Opened F&B stores.
the feeling of home
My mum likes to buy sugar roll for my sister and I for breakfast almost thrice a week and I’m just not sick of it. She usually purchases three different flavours for us- vanilla, panda or strawberry so that we can choose. Personally, I prefer the vanilla sugar roll over the other two sugar rolls mainly because it’s the most authentic flavours and it doesn’t taste that sweet compared to the other two sugar roll. It just make me feel satisfy and fulfilling after eating it.
As polar shop is convenient to me, the puffs never fail to tempt me when I’m walking home. I will just look at the puffs that are available and purchase some if I’m really hungry. Sometimes ,the crew would ask me to try their signature puffs ( which I have never try before till now since I keep eat the same pie ) or asking me whether I’m buying sugar roll home. It just makes me feel that their service is great because there are able to identify familiar customers who usually patronize the stalls.
It just makes me gratifying, whenever I walk pass it as if i'm already at home.
simple and satisfying
Polar can be found in most shopping malls and even selected petrol kiosks. It is honestly the best place for Sugar Rolls! Polar sugar rolls are a simple yet satisfying snack to have. No fancy icings, no lavish decorations, just a plain cake roll sprinkled with a moderate amount of fine icing sugar. The moment it entered my mouth, I could feel the fine icing sugar melting on my tongue, giving me this pleasant sweet taste. The cake feels soft but firm at the same time. I took another bite. Before I knew it, the roll was finished and I would look forward to my next sugar roll.
Besides sweet cakes, they do have savory puffs and pies as well. Amongst all the savories, my favorite would be the sausage puff. I used to have that when I was much younger and I always love the moment where I bite into the layered puff. Crispy, satisfying and just... awesome. This will rank 2nd after the sugar roll. If you like spiciness, curry puffs are available. The counter staffs are always friendly and polite to me! Added bonus. For birthdays, you can choose between a normal cake or a cartoon-printed cake. I must admit that the cartoon-printed cakes are really adorable!
What comes to my mind when someone mentions Polar is the colorful and delightful looking pastries. The cakes often look exceptionally bright and cheery and the large variety of puffs and snacks are enough to entice you to get something to munch on from Polar!
The more popular snacks are the pies and durian cakes I think. I like the sausage puff though! It used to be my favourite snack during secondary school days, where there were two sausages in the puff instead of one. It was cheaper back then too. The yam cake that they used to sell was quite delicious too! Not too sweet and the moisture was just nice, and the cake was not very mushy. The sugar rolls are worth a try too, totally suits the sweet tooth-ed people!
However, I think that the birthday cakes which are of the creamy kind are not that worth buying. It is more suitable for children than adults, as they are creamy and have cartoon pictures on them. But other than that, the snacks are fine!
Pies that retain its taste through out
Whenever i think of Polar, i think of their chicken pie and the Special Pie.
First the crust of the chicken pie is crispy and light. When you bite into it, the crust breaks into pieces and it feels light and not oily. The taste of the crust is the taste of freshly baked pies, and this taste remains even if the pies have been left aside for a few hours. The filling in the chicken pie is another great thing to mention as the mixture consists of chunky chicken meat and also mushrooms and some mixed vegetable cubes. The taste of it is very local and does not make me feel sick of it, as some pies do as the taste of the filling become too overwhelming.
For the Special Pie, it is rather like the chicken pie, but the filling is cooked with a creamy sauce, which i think is like a mushroom sauce. It looks a bit like those mushroom soup in a cup that some western food stalls are selling, except there is no soup.
I think the best thing i like about Polar pies is that no matter you eat them a long while later or it is already cold, the taste and texture of the pies is not lose and it is still retained.

best swiss rolls and chicken pie!
When I was younger, my mom would buy home some really yummy swiss rolls and pastry from Polar for our breakfast. Ever since then, I would frequent Polar to get my swiss roll/pastry fix.
My favorite pastry from Polar is the chicken pie. It has a flaky, crispy crust and chunks of chicken, mushroom and mixed vegetables on the inside. The sugar rolls are also one of my favorite because it’s not as sweet as regular cakes and the size of the roll is just right.
Polar will remain a childhood favorite for me because it always reminds me of my mom.
Delicious Puffs And Rolls
Polar Puffs and Cakes sells a mean curry puff that rivals Old Chang Kee’s. While Old Chang Kee’s curry puff pastry is more dense and buttery, Polar’s curry puff is flakier and airy. Very different renditions, but both are equally yummy.
Another favourite of mine is the strawberry roll, which is filled with sweet strawberry jam and dusted with icing sugar. However, I always get a weird aftertaste and my tongue feels very dry after eating the strawberry roll, but it’s worth it.
Cheapest confectionary in Singapore
Polar sells one of the cheapest confectionary in Singapore. This includes its traditional vanilla based cakes, puffs, rolls, as well as savoury pies. In fact, the prices are so low that many schools and organisations often cater from Polar.
I personally do not have a penchant for the confectionary from Polar as they are average in taste. Perhaps the factor that draws people to the confectionary chain is its affordability. However, credit has to be given to Polar for attempting to spruce up their cakes. They have included icing printed cartoon pictures at the top of their cakes to entice children.
Overall, you can’t have the best of both worlds. If you are looking for quality products, hit up the hipster cafes around Tiong Bahru but if you’re looking for huge quantities of confectionary, Polar is a good option!
Flavours that are too fake!
I find their cakes are too strong and artificial in their colours. The kiwi swiss rolls are too green in colour, the strawberry cakes are too pink and the durian cakes are too yellow. It seemed like they put in a lot of colourings to attract the attention of customers. On the taste front, their cakes are just so-so. The kiwi swiss rolls have hardly any kiwi taste. The strawberry cakes are simple a use of strawberry emulcos (flavouring). Nothing authentic. The durian swiss rolls are really sub-standard. They are worst off than those homemade cakes. All-in-all, i do not recommend buying their cakes. Just simply not worth the money!
Great offers on cakes!
I remember for my best friend's birthday, our small group of close friends were planning to surprise him at his house with a cake. The problem was that since we were a bunch of students and we wanted to keep this party more secluded to just us close friends, we didn't have much money to spend on the cake (what with the other gifts and all). I went scavenging for cheap cakes and it shocked me to see even those small bakeries selling their cakes at exorbitant prices.
But thankfully, I stumbled upon Polar at Tampines Mall and found a pretty cake that was selling for only twenty dollars! It tasted great and had a soft, spongy texture to it. They weren't stingy with the toppings and there wasn't an excess of cream which really makes me nauseous.
Needless to say, my friend loved his birthday cake!
Still going strong...
I've always loved buying their signature curry puffs, but over the years I've realised that Polar has drastically reduced the amount of filling in their curry puffs and have also increased the price from $1.30 to $1.60. Needless to say, I find this exorbitant.
Fortunately, however, there are saving graces for this franchise. Among these are their sugar rolls. Soft, fresh, and impeccably tasty, these spring rolls are perfect additions for any parties and gatherings. Another popular hit is their Cookies & Cream cake, with light cream cheese and vanilla sponge. Coupled with a delicious crushed cookie base, cookie lovers should try this calorie-busting cake!
Best Sugar Rolls In Singapore!
Polar Puffs and Cakes has The Best sugar rolls in Singapore. It is basically a swiss roll, fluffy soft sponge cake, rolled together with some cream in different flavors such as the classic sugar roll (vanilla cake and plain cream) or chocolate (chocolate cake and chocolate cream). The exterior of the sugar roll is also coated with sugar crystals to give that extra crunch and sweetness. The best thing about Polar though is that they also have a non-sugar coated version of the same sugar roll for those who want their cakes to be less sweet.
There are many other places that sell Swiss Rolls. Bengawan Solo would be one, which is cut from the same cloth as Polar, with similar concepts, prices and cakes. There are also the more expensive shops such as the Japanese Bakeries selling swiss rolls at Takashimaya. But I truly think that out of all of them Polar still has the best sugar rolls. The cake is perfectly light (think chiffon and angel cake light) and the cream is not sickening or too much. The fact that you can choose whether you want extra sugar or not is also great. Perhaps it is because I've grown up eating it, but the fact that my family and myself included have not gotten sick of eating Polar sugar rolls shows how good it is!
Best sugar-coated swiss rolls in town!
My appetite has always been poor in the mornings but polar cakes never fail to make a good breakfast for me.
My favourites have got to be the tri-layered sponge cake, the swiss rolls and the peach tarts. Unlike many layered cakes sold in other confectioneries, the Polar tri-layered sponge cake does not contain too much cream. Furthermore, it's a combination of three flavours, which ups the taste factor.
Another of my favourite would be their strawberry sugar-coated mini swiss rolls, which are in a shade of delectable pink. They certainly look as yummy as they taste! I also like that the sugar icing is very fine, which instantly melts in one's mouth and enhances the sweetness of the cake. The mini swiss rolls come in little paper cups. Order a box of twelve and they look presentable enough for a house-warming gift.
I would also recommend their peach and almond tarts. Although I would prefer the crust to be more crispy, I love the tarts for the filling, which is very fragrant and soft. The best part of the tarts would be the tiny bits of peach and almond embedded in the filling. Definitely a must-try!
Polar also produces cartoon character themed cakes, and is also one of the few confectioneries that produce Angry Birds themed cakes...a favourite for the Angry Birds fans!
All in all, I think that Polar has one of the best cakes and pastries for the price range it offers.
Love their sugar swiss rolls!
I simply love the sugar swiss rolls from Polar! Not too creamy and goes well with hot milo. This is one of my comfort food when I am tired and need a sugar rush. The swiss rolls are baked daily and come in different flavours such as pandan. Though I have yet to try all the flavours, I highly recommend the sugar swiss rolls as well as the pandan flavoured ones. Besides the swiss rolls, their curry puff is to die for whenever I am craving for something spicy. Their curry puff consists of diced onions, bite size pieces of chicken and curry paste. I usually buy this for breakfast every morning before I go to work.
I like their cakes
My mum always buys a cake from them for our birthdays, and sometimes pastries for supper from petrol stations. Their cakes are delicious, sweet but not too rich, and while the designs can be rather limited, they still make an effort in creating simple classic designs, and offer some customization as well. You do not need overly fanciful designs for a cake to be yummy. My favourite pastry has got to be their hot dog puffs, as the pastry puffs are always crispy and flaky, something I love! The texture as well as the taste is great, and you can't ask for more.
