Purvis St is testament to the fact that F&B is pretty much a recession-proof industry. Unlike the high end furnishing boutiques which have since succumbed to closure, the eateries on Purvis have thrived and multiplied.
Contributing to the feeding frenzy is Kooka (presumably the name is the abbreviation for "Kookaburra" since this caff is Aussie). Typical of Oz style, the decor oozes cool factor of the uncontrived kind, what with artfully peeled paint on the walls and a farmyard barrel converted into an ingenious dining table. The staff are friendly and the ambience relaxing.
The food is yummy and affordable. I've sampled the set lunch (sandwich or pasta with the best iced tea in town) as well as the signature dessert (apple crumble served with a dollop of home-made ice cream) with coffee (a solid cuppa).
The cooking smell from the kitchen does waft out quite a bit, but oh well nobody's perfect eh.
