Freedom of Choice
If you are a handicraft enthusiast like myself, you would love this shop just like I do! Ever since the closing of the bead shop at the basement of Heeren and then another one at Shaw Centre, I always felt that it was difficult to find a shop selling all kinds of beads as well as findings which are accessories to doing your bead work. Although on the pricier side, Beads Etc. gives a very wide selection of bead types from metal to wooden beads and even vintage ceramic beads.
I especially like the way you can freely select the beads you want from trays and trays of selections. Each container is labeled with the price so you know exactly what you are buying and how much each piece is. Beads Etc. may be considered on the higher price range compared to places like Arab Street, but it is a one-stop location for practically all of your beading needs. Also, you don’t usually get to select each piece of bead individually the way you can at Beads Etc.
If you are not into handicraft but love bead items, there is also a selection of ready-made items that you can choose from, much like purchasing from a jewelry shop!
big range but a bit pricey
I probably should have done more research before heading down to the beading (jewellery-making) supplies shop to get materials for my project. While it wasn’t totally a wasted trip, I did not manage to find everything I needed and things I got could have been cheaper, as I found out later.
The shop is easy to find on the third floor of Orchard Central, a pretty big place filled with shelves upon shelves of beads, ornaments, charms and stringing material like cord, thread, silk and nylon sold by piece or by spools. At first I was pretty happy because it looked well stocked for my needs.I was the only one there except what looked like two staff or owners sitting at a table working on necklaces, so it was really quiet and a bit awkward. And then after one browse throughout the many shelves in the shop it got more awkward because I was feeling lost. I didn’t know exactly what I needed and I couldn’t spot them immediately to compare. After searching even more I felt more helpless and was loitering for too long. This is probably because no one approached me to help. Although usually I prefer to be left alone to my shopping, who would mind a little helpful assistance, right? The staff only answered my question and offered no further assistance, like in searching. Finally I got a few items and when I paid the staff looked no friendlier, and even a little impatient. Not the best service here.
What is good is probably the central location, and 10% discount with a student pass. But as I found out later online there are plenty of beading supplies shop in Chinatown at apparently much lower prices. I shall review later if I check them out.
