The Food for Thought at the Singapore Botanic Gardens is huge for a cafe, taking the place of what used to be an entire food court. The whole restaurant is very spacious, with ample natural lighting through full length windows stretching the length of the restaurant.The high ceilings help absorb noise so when coming in a large group you won’t have to worry about disturbing other patrons.
In general, just be prepared to pay a premium for the location and environment, but there are a few budget friendly menu options. The Basic Works on their breakfast menu is great value for only $9, but for the House works you pay $6 extra for just hashbrowns and cherry tomato salad. The local delights come at $6 which is reasonable for such a restaurant.
Food For Thought at Botanic Gardens is a place I frequent whenever I'm in town and feel like getting away from the crowd. The ambiance and environment in this branch is amazing as it is spacious, homely and well-organized, one instantly feels relaxed upon entering.
It is one of my favourite place to chill with magazines and good food, such as their pancakes, full works, cinnamon roll and scones! Another good thing is they offer local delights such as kaya toasts and nasi lemak as well. Pancakes come with gula melaka sauce, which is a twist from your usual maple syrup.
Prices are reasonable with no GST and service charge. Definitely a good location for big group gatherings or romantic dates! Feel free to take a stroll around the beautiful garden to end off a great meal.
I frequent the branch at Singapore Botanic Gardens. Based within Singapore's most historical garden park, this Food For Thought branch celebrates family, rest and sustainable living.
People who want to visit the place should take note to enter the place by the entrance at Cluny Road, as Food for Thought (FFT) is located there. It's a convenient location as there is a bus stop right outside the entrance, and people are able to drive in and park their cars at the basement carpark right next to FFT.
What attracts me to FFT over and over again is the huge dining area that follows a natural and simplistic concept. The restaurant is huge and spacious, and I love the natural lighting that comes in through the huge glass panels at the side. Communal dining is encouraged at FFT, where people can sit together and interact with their friends or even strangers. With the ingenious seating arrangement, barriers are broken and conversations flow easily.
My favourite food is probably their Slow Pulled Pork Burger ($9). Cooked perfectly and paired with potato chunks - oh so delicious! Already mentally drooling while typing this. Another of my favourite food will All-Day Breakfast. Diners can customise their own breakfast, and I ALWAYS go for the mushrooms, which are always so juicy, so succulent.
After your meal, you can always get out and embrace the sweet nature. Go for a stroll with your friends or family members within the Garden to complete the experience.
All in all, Food for Thought is definitely one of my favourite dining places in Singapore. The environment, the food, the people, everything just caters to my taste. Perfect.
Owned by the same guys who developed School of Thought and Broader Perspectives, Food for Thought offers exactly what its name suggests: Food and thoughts. The walls are decorated with wise words of wisdom while the place-mats offer random pearls of knowledge and messages, it seems like a perfect brunch place for the intellectually curious and inner geeks in all of us.
You can pick up copies of Broader Perspectives anywhere in the cafe, and whilst it brings me back to days of writing GP essays in JC, I still enjoy perusing the articles by Mr Tong Yee.
Food wise, I really liked their fries with rosemary garlic. It is thicker than the usual fries from Macs, crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The cake display is also very attractive, and all in all, it is a nice place for a cuppa and catch up sesh with those friends you haven't met in a while. A safe bet will be the pasta as you can hardly go wrong with pasta.
My friends and walked around Botanic Gardens just to try Food for Thought. The ambience was great! Tucked into a quiet corner, with wooden furniture and long high tables fit for large groups of friends. The felt clouds and mild orange lights gave the place a homely feeling.
There was a range of food to choose from - pancakes, burgers, salads and sides. I found it rather pricey, but thank goodness there was no gst and service charge! I had the sweet potato and pulled pork burger which was really quite small. They were generous with the pulled pork though, but it was overly salted and the slice of sweet potato was not exactly compensating.
However, I tried some of my friend's foods. Their pancakes were nothing special, but the spiced gula melaka that accompanied it was certainly something else. I'd never tasted anything like it before. Sweet yet fragrant, a perfect match to the pancakes. Their sides are also really tasty! I liked the beetroot with yogurt and the broccoli.
Overall, I would say the portions are a little small for the price, but it's still a nice place to hang out and chill.
This is one of those kind of places which makes you feel like ordering every single item on their menu. So yes, we ended up ordering a couple to share so that everyone gets to try more dishes!
We ordered a Full Works (comprised of scrambled eggs, bacon, butter toast, hash browns, roasted tomato salad, chicken sausage, garlic mushrooms), Dark Chocolate & Raspberries Pancakes (which comes with cream & gula melaka syrup), a Slow Pulled Pork Burger (with sweet potato chunks) and a Chicken Cutlet.There was so much food, but we finished every morsel of it in high spirits. We kept yumm-ing in total acknowledgement of the pancakes' awesomeness. I've actually had this once at the Bras Basah branch but didn't remember it being this good. I remember though, that the Brash Basah one was awfully drenched overwhelmingly with syrup and chocolate, which made it too sweet. I guess whether you like it or not would depend on your personal threshold for sweetness!
After we were done with the main courses, we ordered another 2 desserts (yes 4 girls ate that much) - Bread & Butter Pudding & a slice of Chocolate Mud Cake. The chocolate ganache was made really well and everyone of us loved it. We were so full at the end of the meal!
The place was luxuriously spacious, which is untypical of crammed up cafes. This Botanical Garden outlet definitely is highly inaccessible though, & I would probably head for the one at Bras Basah instead of this in future!
I wish to commend especially on the FFT Branch at Botanic Gardens. It is different from its queen street branch in the sense that it is self-serviced and menu is slightly differently. The branch at Botanical Gardens is huge and spacious, and it is ideal for breakfast/coffee while surfing the net/ doing project work.
We ordered the full works ($18)- which is a wholesome breakfast choice of toast, salad, hasbrowns, saussages, omelette and bacon. Sounds Yummy isnt it? The portion was very big and enough to share between 2. I also ordered the chocolate pancakes and they were very sweet and appetizing as well.
I had a wonderful lunch at Food For Thought. It will also be nice to take a walk and appreciate nature after a fulfilling meal at Botanic Gardens. Remember, FFT is located at the Tanglin gate, not near the circle line of Botanic Gardens!
Nice food and great people. I love how the staff are extremely well mannered and genuinely hope to enhance your dining experience. The decor is simple but chic and pleasing to the eye. The menu and table mats have the cutest illustrations.
But the real show snatcher here are the breakfast courses. Pancakes are a great size and can quickly fill you up so I suggest sharing with a friend should you want to try several flavours. I couldn't help but gobble down my banana and chocolate chip pancakes and even though I was pretty full after that I couldn't help but yearn for more. Definitely worth trying out!
I went to the one next to SAN (Singapore Art Museum) on a weekend noon and I had to wait for quite some time before a seat was available. Be there early!
The service is good in the sense that everything was done as fast as possible.. But I dont remember the staff smiling or looking at all glad to be serving us.
There are items being sold in Food For Thought which you could browse through while waiting for your food.
I usually order the seafood risotto. Comes with squid and prawns. It is tasty, not too rich nor overpowering. The seafood is fresh too. The serving may seem too little but it is actually very filling- for me at least. I am not a very big eater so.. well it may be too small after all if you are a big eater.
The breakfast set is also quite worth the money- I really liked this bready thing.. Is it called a brioche?? The scrambled eggs are nicely done and the hash browns are not like your Macdonalds hashbrowns- they are so milky and they come in cute little takoyaki-looking balls!
A little on the expensive side, but priced like any other restaurants of its type. Worth a visit.
