In the blink of an eye, it’s already the end of January. But the whole “new year, new me” mantra is still ringing loud and clear, yet...we haven’t had the chance to get started on our New Year’s resolutions. For those who jotted down giving back to the community as a resolution, here are 7 volunteering workshops to gear you up for Youth Corps Service Week:

 

1. Volunteering with children

When it comes to volunteering with children, some are immediate naturals. But for those slightly apprehensive, Singapore Children’s Society is offering a workshop for all - speakers will be sharing their own experiences on activities like interactive games, sharing sessions, and roleplay games.

Before you know it, you’ll be getting along with everyone, from mischievous kids to moody teens!

2. Volunteering with Persons with Intellectual Disabilities

Volunteering with Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (PWID) could take on many forms, from career guidance to monthly outings around Singapore. To build your friendships with PWIDs, MINDS! Me Too Club goes through life fundamentals like: education and employment routes, different levels of intellectual disability, and interaction skills.

3. Volunteering in social services

 

Emmaus Strategies - Fundamentals of Effective Volunteering in the Social Services

Those with zero experience in volunteering will benefit massively from this workshop by Emmaus Strategies. It’s a 2-part series: the first gives you a thorough rundown of what to expect, with a Walk In Our Shoes Simulation so we better understand the social problems faced by people in need, while the second gives you much-needed skills for you to help others.

4. Volunteering with seniors

 

Montfort Care - Tips for Befriending Seniors

Experienced volunteers with Montfort Care will be giving you the lowdown on what it’s like volunteering with seniors. You can trust what they say too: all 3 speakers have a medley of volunteering experience, from operating a social enterprise cafe to specially developing an exercise regime for the elderly.

5. Helping to save Singapore’s waters

It’s something we take for granted, but it’s no easy feat protecting Singapore’s waters. With The Watchers of the Waterway’s workshop, you’ll learn all about protecting our water catchment areas from pollution - both human and naturally-occuring. You’ll also get to test raw water samples with a water quality field testing kit!

6. Helping to conserve nature

 

National Parks Board - Our Garden City: Nature conservation in Urban Singapore

You have to admit: our country might be known for its glitzy skyscrapers, but there’s a whole lotta leafy greens everywhere. With NParks’ Our Garden City workshop, learn all about how nature is being conserved in urban Singapore. There’ll be a talk led by NParks’ Director for Biodiversity Information and Policy, along with a group discussion to share your thoughts.

7. Learning how to better communicate with children and youth

We might be millennials ourselves, but the slang that 12 year olds are using these days? *Shrugs* - not a clue. Head down to Lakeside Family Services’ workshop, where you’ll learn useful tips on how to get in the inner circles of children and youth - skills that’ll help you understand them better for future volunteering sessions.

Volunteering with Youth Corps Singapore

 

 

It’ll soon be Youth Corps Service Week - mark it in your calendars, it’s from 16 to 23 March -  when everyone gives back to the community through fun activities like walking trails and art jamming sessions. But before we delve right into it, we can get started with Youth Corps Singapore’s 7 lead-in workshops.

As a Youth Corps Singapore initiative, they’ve paired up with various community partners to hold these workshops - all designed to make your volunteering journey easier.
