Other than the fact that they belong to epic movie series, the soundtracks of Harry Potter, Star Wars, and POTC have one binding trait: they were all played by classical orchestras. And while it’s easy to hum along to those tracks by heart, the world of classical music still feels a tad foreign to many.

But classical music isn’t just for the posh chichi crowd. In fact, our very own Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) regularly takes their music beyond concert halls and into the community. This month features free concerts in town and even the heartlands – read on to find out where to catch them!

Good news if you’re working in the CBD, because SSO will be holding a free lunchtime concert on 11 July 2018, 12.30pm at the Victoria Concert Hall – also affectionately known as the “home of the SSO”.

The concert repertoire will comprise of Russian pieces like excerpts from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.

If the latter name rings a bell, that’s because he was the composer of The Sleeping Beauty waltz for the eponymous ballet, which was later used in the classic Disney animation we’re all familiar with.

To top things off, they will also be performing Rimsky-Korsakov’s famous Flight of the Bumble-Bee which will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Note: tickets will be distributed from 11.30am in the VCH ground floor lobby on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets cannot be collected on behalf of persons not present.

Those who can’t make it down to the Central area during their lunch break can look forward to free concerts at Victoria Junior College on 12 July at 7.30pm, or Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School on 13 July at 7.30pm. The concert line-ups will be identical throughout, so take your pick.

Alternatively, head to the Botanic Gardens for an open-air performance on 29 July, 6.15pm, at the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage. Here, you’ll get to listen to Borodin’s lively Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor, as well as the entire set of movements from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

Don’t forget to bring a picnic mat and some snacks if you wish to have something to munch on while appreciating the music.

Consider breaking away from familiar pop or EDM favourites, and take some time to appreciate the classical genre for a change. The SSO is full of talented individuals, so the performances will surely be top-notch.

Who knows, you might even find yourself adding some concertos to your Spotify playlist afterwards.

Even if you don’t manage to catch the performances happening this month, there will definitely be more in time to come. Stay posted via SSO’s website where they’ll give updates on any upcoming free concerts here, and ticketed events here.
