When we see anything photo-worthy, we don’t simply tap on the ordinary camera app to capture it any more. We upload glam photos on Facebook and Instagram, where people show off their #squadgoals/#relationshipgoals/#foodporn shots. However, when it comes to making our friends paiseh, showing off our newly acquired loots from the mall, or just simply documenting our daily life, we head to Snapchat.
My friends snap just about anything you can think of: footsteps on the way to school, the sky, the delicious nasi lemak at the Kopitiam… the list goes on. Snapchat has essentially become their personal life documenting tool! Here are 10 types of Singaporean snapchatters you see every day.
1. FoodieCam – Nearly edible snaps
Snaps from Foodie snapchatters only appear in their story when they are eating, or when they come across food which are crave-worthy. The snaps range from close-up shots showing the texture of the food, to overview shots of all the food items. Foodie snapchatters exist to make you hungry – that’s basically it.
2. PanaromaCam – Ordinary video panorama
PanoramaCam snapchatters record the video in a horizontal or vertical direction, like how ordinary panoramas are taken. 3. ViolentShakers™ – Spasms in video
When we say violent, we really mean machiam earthquake. ViolentShakers™ express themselves through snaps by shaking their devices like they are spazzing over delicious food! Snaps from this type of snapchatter can make you giggle on the train, as humour is injected in the snap. However, the snaps from ViolentShakers™ are all wobbly and whirly – you can only make out hints of laughter and pure mess.
4. SmackCam – A hit with snapchatters
As their name suggests, SmackCam-type snapchatters aim to hit the target in their snap repeatedly with their camera. This type of snapchatter can either be the ire of his own snap, or find someone else to smack. I can’t explain why, but these snaps are surprisingly entertaining to watch.
5. SnapStalkers – S for Stalk
SnapStalkers are snapchatters who don’t snap. Instead, their Snapchat activity is restricted to viewing other people’s snaps from behind the screen. Little is known about their lives; all we know is that they have seen our snaps. Creepy.
6. Vloggers – The classic
The snap starts with a 3-second selfie of the snapchatter’s glamourous face, then goes on to what the he/she actually wanted to show in the first place. This type of snap is taken by the vlogger – you will always see the his face first.
7. Doodlers – Artists of the Snapchat world
Artists have transcended the boundaries of conventional pen and paper to reach Snapchat. Doodlers decorate stills with the marker tool, and can spend 10 minutes or more crafting just one snap. Insane dedication.
When these snapchatters turn to video, they mainly draw arrows and circles to point out or emphasize something in the clip.
8. BlackoutCam – Nothing but words
BlackoutCam snapchatters cover the lens with their fingers, or take pictures in pitch dark places so that the resulting image is a full-black colour. Then, they express themselves using typed words instead. Sooo emo.
9. The Observer – Just life in a snap
The Observer’s snaps are potentially at two extremes – extremely mundane and pointless, or very intriguing and valuable. Their snaps are usually a continuous recording of a fixed angle and fixed subject for that full 10 seconds.

10. SuddenMotion™ Snapchatters
As their name suggests, SuddenMotion™ snapchatters shift focus from one subject in the video to another at breakneck speed. These snaps emphasize comical effect, juxtaposing the subjects in the video through abrupt changes of focus. This type of snapchatters make snaps that are dynamic and humourous. And sometimes nauseous.
