More Than Just Crepe

If you can’t decide if you’re more of a waffles or pancakes person, I suggest going for its classier cousin. As fancy looking as they are versatile, crepes can be eaten on the go, used as a wrap or served on fine china with whipped cream on top. They taste good with practically anything, from Nutella and ice-cream to scrambled eggs and ham, both sweet and savoury work.

Though its depth is a fraction of regular pancakes, crepes are satisfying enough to fill one’s tummy. Being a crepe lover myself, I decided to collate some of my go-to places when the craving hits.

Is your mouth watering thinking of authentic, warm, fresh French crepes made for you on the spot? Conveniently located within the free-tram zone in the CBD, you’ll smell La Petite Creperie before you even see it. Manned by two cheerful French owners, learn a few French words from them while you’re at it! Prices range from $4.50 to $8. Bon appetit!

This is the place where crepe lovers regularly patronise. Some crepes come folded in a triangle, a square, or their signature hexagonal shape. Try the flaming (alcoholic) crepes and watch in awe as your crepe is set ablaze in a lilac flame!

Just several metres from the Melbourne Central tram stop, this store can’t be hard to miss.

Roule Galette is a humble creperie situated at 241 Flinders Lane. Owned by Chef Michel from Brittany who learnt to prepare crepes since the age of ten, he follows a traditional family recipe. These include delightful spreads like apple compote and orange marmalade. They also offer gluten-free “galettes” when you opt for the savoury ones.

Carte crepes is located in Parkville, within the university of Melbourne. Near the entrance of Grattan Street, enter through Gate 10, walk a few steps ahead and turn left before a flight of stairs. It’s easy to find but if you’re unsure, ask any student who’s about. In case you’re having trouble deciding on which to choose, try their lemon and sugar crepe.

I’ve always had a soft spot for flower petals used in food presentation, even if they make no significant difference to the taste. If you’re like me, you’re going to love Rue de Creperie. Make sure you get you food photography done quickly before the ice cream melts! Gluten-free crepes are also served here at an additional charge of $1.

They have an exotic assortment of Asian-inspired ice-cream flavours such as black sesame, matcha, durian and lychee. You also get to pick any two flavours of your choice if you choose to DIY your crepes.

Besides crepes, they also serve pancakes and waffles for those who prefer something more hearty.  Feel free to head down after dinner since it only closes at midnight! Bonus: this place has free wi-fi too!
