Here’s one for the Lord Of The Rings fans: Wellington houses some of the filming locations that were used in the fantasy movie series. Kaitoke Regional Park was Rivendell, and Harcourt Park was the Gardens of Isengard.

Putangirua Pinnacles

The Putangirua Pinnacles in the Aorangi Ranges where Legolas, Aragorn and Gimli fought the Army of the Undead.

While in Wellington, it’s also worth taking a domestic flight from there to Christchurch, which will only set you back by just $100 or less. Nature buffs can go for a leisurely stroll through the ancient kahikatea forest of Riccarton Bush, visit Orana Wildlife Park, NZ’s only open-range zoo, or hike up the scenic Mount Kaukau for some of the best views.
