These Free Activities in the Arts District Can Help You Recover From Post Holiday Blues


Fun at Arts Weekend Civic District

 

If you're on the hunt for meaningful weekend plans with the kiddos this month of June, you're in luck. Arts Weekend Civic District, an initiative by the National Arts Council, brings together a whole line-up of entertainment every last weekend of the month.

It might be back to the classroom but that doesn't mean the weekends have to be mundane. Plus, the many multi-sensory installations aren't the only reason to hit up the Civic District this weekend.

Calling all the young and young at heart, from National Gallery’s Children's Festival: Small Big Dreamers 2018 to live music and wayang kulit performances, it’s activities galore in Civic District this weekend from 29th June – 1st July.

Hands On by We Make Carpets

With the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp, now might be the perfect time to let your kids experience what it's like to be minuscule. Let their imagination run free with Hands On, an interactive installation to build a playful work of art out of pool noodles, velcro strips and even kitchen sponges.

Cross the bridge of optical illusions and travel back in time

Columns and peepholes hide toys, paper planes, books, building blocks and letters to create an element of discovery and surprise for little ones.

Journey back in time and blur the lines of reality at Mark Justiniani's Passages and Bridges – Evolution of Firewalk: A Bridge of Embers. Cross a mind-bending 12-metre reflective bridge and seek out "ancient artefacts” in mysterious windows, peepholes and columns.

A Waking Dream: Sun-Boy and Yellow Man is a 5-part interactive installation of music, colour, shapes and textures that will send your children on a deep-dive into the colourful world of local artist Lee Wen's storybook. Discover the ins and outs of his life as an artist and what it means to be a little big dreamer.

Settle in for a traditional wayang kulit performance titledCupu Manik Astagina: The Sacred Jewel Box” on the Empress Lawn. And if you’re in the mood for more, check out their new art and sound installation “The Current/s We Call Home | Arus Berlabuh Kita - a collaboration between Indonesian artist Kabul, and Singaporean artist Mintio at the Asian Civilisations Museum.
