A Great Find.

Spotted this great local produce during a recent trip to a car workshop in the Taman Sentosa area to do my car wheels alignment and balancing. Initially, I thought this shop, which was not crowded during my visit (I was the only other patron in the shop), might not be very popular. The natural conclusion one draw, would be "is the snacks here any good? How come no crowd?".

But when you observe the tall stack of baskets positioned for shoppers to "scoop and pile up" items in their buying spree and the wide range of snacks and festive goodies, you should have an fair idea that this shop is geared towards volume buyers. Yes, before long, a few tour vans pulled up and hordes of tourists (definitely from Singapore) were making a bee-line for the Mid-Autumn festive snacks and of course , Moon Cakes. A chat with couple of the shoppers revealed Yee Siang was one of their day Johor Bahru-shopping trip itineraries for local produces and snacks. Talk about marketing and distribution networking ! The casual shopper is always welcomed here but it's the tourists-shoppers that is the shop main bread & butter.

There many types of flavours available but my fave is still the original lotus seed paste variety. The prices are of course cheaper than from Singapore. But the shop signature red bean paste cakes and "wife's biscuits" should be included in the shopping basket. The taste of traditional are captured in their snacks which make for great tea-time accompaniment.

So the next time you are in the Taman Sentosa area, do check out Yee Siang. It's located on the down-slope road opposite The Grand Sentosa Hotel, along the Malaysian Telco building. Just look for their signboard with the logo of boy scout doing a salute.
