PROTON is a Malay acronym for 'Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Berhad' which has the meaning of National Automobile Enterprise in English. Founded in 1983 under the direction of the former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, PROTON was the first and only national automobile manufacturer in Malaysia until the establishment of the secondary national automobile manufacturer, Perodua, in 1993.

Worst Carmaker, Ever!
Proton is a local carmaker that is definitely a waste of money to me. I believe the National Automotive Policy is made to keep Proton safe at all times in case it goes bankrupt. In other words, a company that won't die unless Malaysia dies. I honestly feel that the quality of the cars made by Proton is just terrible. It spoils the national image. How so?
I have a Proton Satria Neo at home. It's only 4 years old yet it feels worse than a 15 year old volkswagen. The car drains fuel like humans drink water and problems seem to always appear for this car. From power window failure to the needle of the speedometer not working, it is indeed a terrible car. Is it just one car? Heck no! My brother's Proton Savvy had the same problems and in fact, his clutch cable seem to break at least once a year.
My family suffered the same problems with the old Proton Wira. A local brand that is rising? Please, the only thing that is rising is the number of problems with their cars. Proton is a company that I personally feel, is holding back Malaysia.
